OK, but not great 3/6/2010

This place has a lot of potential, but doesn't use it. Great bar and the Well, but both are greatly under-used. The well is so dark you can hardly see what it is. The food is ok, not worth the price, especially with all of the fantastic choices in Dallas. The service is fair, I ordered a gin and tonic and got it without a lime. Asked for a lime and around dessert she remembered, about the time I was having coffee. We'll keep trying other places, probably won't go back. Pros: Great Bar and the Well, but very dark and not lit Cons: Pricey, fair food, fair service more

Disappointing food and service 1/22/2010

My fiancee and I went to eat there because I had a gift card to the restaurant. On top of food being overpriced the service was atrocious. The staff member who is responsible for filling up the water actually did a better job at serving us than the waitress who ignored our table for the whole time after me trying to call her over. I ordered Mediterranean shrimp and calamari but the shrimp tails were not cut off. If the plate of food cost $10-15 I would not even complain about the tails, but when you pay $30 a plate I would at least expect the shrimp tails being disposed. Food needed more flavor and was absolutely dull. We will not return. Pros: Apple ahi tuna Cons: everything else more

GREAT PLACE for a quiet dinner and conversation! 9/3/2008

Great place once you are in the door. Have had several of the seafood dishes, they are very tasty, but sometimes the sauces are a tad too sweet. What a great atmosphere with the well in the middle and ships all around. Great also for private parties!! Keep going back..GREAT PLACE! mal Pros: ambience, service, food, parking Cons: leaning tables more

The BEST of the BEST! 8/25/2008

Newports restaurant is probably the finest dining establishment in Downtown Dallas. The owner, food, waitstaff, and ambiance are top notch. We have had our holiday party there for several years now, and will continue to go back. Because when we are there, we are treated with nothing but dignity and respect. Go dine at Newport's - you won't be disappointed!! more

Uncommon Dallas Treasure! 8/21/2008

Newport's has been in Dallas for a very long time and has surpassed many trendy alternatives. A friend took me there for the first time about three years ago and I've gone back a couple times a year since. The wine selection is wonderful and there are certain classic entrees that have been there for ages. I'd reccomend Newport's for any romantic occasion, as I've taken my girlfriend there and she couldn't be happier. Try Scallops Newport or the Coconut Salmon and you'll see why this is unique in comparison to other quality fresh fish-oriented restaurants. Often, I get one of my favorite types of fish simply mesquite grilled (seabass or rainbow trout) with their basic buerre blanc sauce. Trust me, they do not skimp on portion sizes either. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Pros: Quality of fish, service, ambience more

All around great seafood restaurant in Dallas. 8/21/2008

Went here for my one year anniversary with my boyfriend. Food and service were both excellent. Very romantic ambiance, especially down near the well area. Ate the seabass...simply divine! And the chocolate truffle pie is a must for the most decadent chocolate you will place in your mouth! Fantastic wine list and server was very versed on recommending a wine pairing with our meal. All in all, great experience, highly recommended. Pros: Food, Attentive Service Cons: Too far from our house! ; ( more

Worst restaurant experience of my life - bar none. 8/10/2008

My husband and I went on our wedding night. Food was OK, service was OK. A small issue with our credit card led the owner to our table to literally berate us. I have never been treated so poorly or so rudely in any restaurant anywhere. He ruined what was supposed to have been our most special night...I left in tears. Miserable, awful experience. Best part? When we got the credit card bill, Newport's had charged us TWICE. Calls to the restaurant to settle the matter were met with hostility and total lack of cooperation. Seriously, the worst restaurant experience I've ever had. I will never return. Pros: Cool aesthetics. Cons: The owner. The way they treat their customers. Nothing can make up for this. more

Eh....? 3/26/2008

Good service, good ambiance, good food, & nice docor. The well makes it really interesting, and makes for an interesting dining experience too. LOVED the staff. Only compaint is bread basket was boring. My opinion, they should use their good sauces as the butter replacement more

Just go! You be the judge! I am from the coast and have to say this is the freshest fish in town! 5/30/2007

How can you go wrong? It is in a historic brewery building that is VERY cool. The service is FANTASTIC! The food superb! The atmosphere is cozy in a classy way. You could be in Boston or on the coast of California and this would be their #1 seafood restaurants! It?s no wonder it got BOC last year! Just go and you be the judge! I think it is the best Seafood restaurant in Dallas! Pros: Great price, service , food.... and owned locally! Cons: none more

delicious seafood, great atmosphere 1/5/2007

This place is great. An unusual, dark, and quiet atmoshpere. The feeling is you're sitting in someplace that's been there a while, not some new upstart w/fake historical ambience or trendy pretense. The servers know the food and the cooks know what they're doing as well. The crab claws were delicate with a matching sauce and the fish filet I had I remember being perfectly done, in no way overcooked. I've only been there for lunch - mostly business-types and the service is quiet, fast, and attentive. We will assuredly return. Pros: Ambience, Service, Food more

Decent 7/16/2006

Let me start by saying that the atmosphere and the service was excellent. The food however was so-so. The lobster bisque was tasty but it went downhill from there. The fish entrees that I tried were all too rich and yet bland, not a good combination. I also tried the key lime pie and it definitely didn't deserve any awards. It was okay, at best. And if you are one of those that judge a restaurant by it's bread, you'll be out the door before the waiter has a chance to take your order. Overall, I wouldn't dissuade anyone from dining here. It's a good place for families and business lunches but it is definitely not an extraordinary experience for the taste buds. Pros: service, spacious, decor Cons: taste, price more

  • The West End Historic District's first upscale restaurant, Newport's Seafood & Steak, opened in 1983. The concept is simple. We purchase our fresh fish from brokers on all coasts every single day. We prepare it with simple elegance and serve it with sincerity, honesty and pride. The concept seems to work, because Newport's Seafood & Steak has thrived for 26 years in Dallas, the city with the most restaurants per capita in the country. We are conveniently located across the street from the AAC & House of Blues.

Try the exquisite steak and seafood, the acclaimed key lime pie or the recognized wine selection--"Award of Excellence" bestowed by Wine Spectator (1996-2009)--and experience a warm, casual dining atmosphere at Newport's Seafood & Steak.

Editorial
  • In Short
This luxury-liner setting still holds clues from the pre-Prohibition days; the enormous beer well is flanked by a model ship. Burnt-umber walls, gold accents and crisp white tablecloths spruce up the restaurant. The interior acts as a warm, come-in-from-the-cold feel, while the food evokes the choppy seas of Maine. The jalapeno marinade spikes a scallop seviche. A menu favorite is the tarragon-flecked lobster bisque, while the tangy Key lime pie is a popular dessert.
