I come from upstate New York where we like our pizza juicy & thick crusted but after living in New Haven for 4 years, I can say this 'za is growing on me. Yes, there are lines but they aren't as endless as Pepe's and Modern supposedly has the oldest brick oven of all the New Haven institutions.
Very experimental varieties - clam seems to be a local fav - and you must always request mozzerella. Pizza so thin you could eat half the pie and my #1 suggestion is to ask for it cooked lightly. Most locals don't care that the crust is so charred from the 700 degree oven that you can't eat it but that seems wasteful to me. Decent salads and they offer a local soda, ""Foxon Park."" Offer up grinders and other entrees but their pizza is still Pres. Bush's favorite.
Pros: tasty, quick service, variety on menu
Cons: long lines, outdated decor, limited st. parking
