I am a firm believer in the value of community college. Despite my having a fancy pants degree from a more prestigious and expensive college, the only way I could afford to finish my degree at such a school was having taken 2 years at a community college. Many of your core classes, especially if you don't really care about required classes that are not part of your major, are available cheaper and at more convenient times within the CT community college system. Many of the teachers at the local more expensive colleges also teach the same classes at the community college - so you are literally getting the same education.
They take CLEP exams here for credit, which is great if you already have some field of knowledge (such as if you remember a course from high school).
I like the small environment, it is a good step for a student not ready to move to a dorm or for an older student who wants to return to school. There is a day care within the school.
I was looking for a certain class for my computer science major, and I thought Quinnipiac, a more expensive private school would have the updated computers and software, and it turns out the community college had better computer systems and the most current software.
Four year schools will take anywhere between 60 -90 credits from a community colleges, it varies by school.

As more and more employers are requiring advanced degrees, Gateway offers more and more solutions.
Gateway is a traditional 2-year college which hosts a lot of degree opportunities. They also support adult learning, meaning they have after hours classes for those who are parents or who may work during the day.
They have recently started offering some of their classes online, in attempt to become more accessible for those who find it easier to attend online rather than in a classroom.
They offer general studies degrees where a student can combine their own interests into a fully accredited degree of their choosing.
Gateway has become extremely popular in the last few years, so register for classes early to avoid disappointment.

Most notably known for it's theatre program, Southern is also known for it's Physical Therapy and Gym degree programs.
Southern is located in New Haven, on the Hamden border and is a CT State school. It is a larger campus, however not as large as UConn or Yale, for example.
The campus has a lot of nightlife and has grown rapidly over the past few years due to expansion and renovation. It has restaurants on campus as well as a bookstore and features a lot of cultural activities for students to enjoy.
