i have been ordering pizzas from pepe's on wooster st. for years and they are the best pizza i have ever had.
they get very crowded on friday nights & weekends because people come from all around to visit wooster st. so if you are planning a trip, you might want to come down during the week or plan on staying a while.
however any wait time is worth it!
the pizza is really delicious. i am convinced that nobody gets better pizza than we do in ct.

I normally don't write reviews but it seems as of now there are six 1 stars and three 5 stars suggesting that people either love or hate this place. After a weekend of sampling food from Little Italy in NYC and Wooster Square I can tell you that Tony & Lucille's is one of the best (if not the best). If you are looking for a traditional Italian family owned restaurant with excellent food and great atmoshphere, look no further.
Pros: Traditional Italian food in a true Italian atmosphere
Cons: Parking in New Haven (is that ever easy?)

I totally disagree with Vivian--this pizza is awesome!! Toppings are fresh, crust so flavorful, and I think the prices are comparable to those in town...unless you are used to buying pizza at Dominoes!! I would encourage anyone to try Dayton Street's pizza!

Salerno's has several excellent items. There bread is a dense heavy tasty loaf with a wonderful crust. This bread is used on their many delicious subs and included with their generous italian dishes that are quite reasonable. They also have several great stuffed breads.
The pizza is a nice crust - you can ask for thin and crispy or thicker crust. The sauce is homemade and the portions are generous. On Mondays and Tuesdays they have a discounted large mozzerella pizza deal, and they don't skimp on ingredients.
Fridays are very busy, they are closed on Sundays. While the atmosphere is very simple, it is a great place to eat.

To say that a long line is a good baromter of the sucess of a business would be apropos in the case of Nica's deli. You better get to Nica's before noon or you will wait in line. In less than a year of its existence - Nica's has clearly supplanted Romeo and Joe's as the best deli in town (though both are comparable).
Both fully served meals, deli sandwiches assorted baked goods, produce and fruits shipped in from New York city daily are a few of the reasons this place is always packed.
I'd say it's on par with what you would expect to find in a top New York city deli.

More
According to common belief, Pepe's is believed to be the first real "pizza place" in the world; granted pizza has been around for alot longer than a few decades, but Pepe's is attributed with being the first to lay down tomato sauce (rather than just sliced tomatoes) and plenty of shredded mozzarella. It's worth a try if you're in town, but it's not within walking distance of city center. Given its reputation, one would think that it's more of an upscale place; quite the contrary! It's very "diner-like" in its inner appearance. Ordering is similar, and the pizzas come on large cookie trays. The pizza is quite greasy, so be prepared. Prices are high for what you get, and be prepared to wait in line, especially on the weekends!
