My hair is naturally fine, dry, and can't seem to decide whether it is wavy or straight - not exactly easy to work with. At every other salon I've been to, I ask for a cut that will work with the natural (unstyled) texture of my hair, but I always seem to end up with something that looks great blown out and crummy every other day. Karma was the first salon I have ever been to where the stylist (I had Cassie) was actually successful in giving me a cut that makes my hair seem fuller, softer, and smoother every day, regardless of how much (or little) I style it. Even two months later, the cut still looks great. And because Karma doesn't sell hair products, the product recommendations Cassie gave me weren't the $30 bottles of shampoo at the front of the store but simple, affordable products that work great for my hair. For as long as I'm in New Haven, I will definitely be sticking with Cassie at Karma.

I heard so many good things about Soho but never went until last week. My haircut is so incredible I am stopped at least twice a day by someone asking me where I got my haircut. When I go back for my next cut, I'm taking some cards to hand out to people so I'll be prepared. I LOVE MY HAIR!!
Pros: Great ambience, good music and wine and cheese on Thursday night.
Cons: None

I went to college in New Haven and when I wanted to treat myself I went to Panache to get my hair done. For me, the price was a little higher than average, but the quality of service and outcome of my haircut was definitely worth it. I never had to make a reservation, but did usually have to wait a couple of hours for my appointment when I called to schedule one that day. There are two Panache salons in New Haven. Either one is good, although I went more to the one on Chapel St.

Once I had this crazy rash on my face that was getting near my eye and then on my throat. I had no history of fast spreading rashes and didn't know what to do. This office got me an appointment the next day, and I thought he would give me a steriod topical cream or something, but explained an old remedy that would work just as well without having to take steriods to get rid of the rash. I left the office thinking that it would never work, but applied the compress soaked in the solution recipe he gave me, and the rash improved after the first application, and was gone before the 24 hours he said it would take. I appreciate a doctor who does not have his patients take drugs with side affects for no good reason, and it took care of my problem immediately. My friend also sees him for cystic acne that is very painful, and says he is the only doctor who has been able to keep it under control.

Whether it is the musky old chairs or the very experienced hands of Phil's barbers that make this place so special, is a constant matter of debate among the clientele. What is certain is that Phil's, located right next to another New Haven staples, Naples PIzza, is a classic place for the boys and men of the Blue to stop in and get their hair cut. The service is reminiscent of old movies, with some barbers eschewing scissors and cutting hair with old-fashioned razors, instead. While this may sound dangerous, it is not in the least so when it is done by people as experienced as the barbers at Phil's. And besides, it is much better for the hair.
If you need to have your hair cut in New Haven, this is the place to go. The one drawback is that hairstyles verge towards the conservative.

These folks very wisely put a $10 coupon in the mailboxes of everyone in my business school class. Sure enough, people showed up.
Now, I'm a Karma gal myself, through and through, but I've now seen quite a few Chameleon cuts on friends, and here's what I've got to say:
They cut hair good, and I've never heard anyone disgruntled.
They're really good at hair coloring! (Both natural and definitely not found in nature colors)
They have at least one person who specializes in very curly hair, which can't be taken for granted!
