Best

The best ever mexican food- it's so authentic! Great spot, highly recommend it have the loborito and the nachos. Pros: none Cons: none

Worst

I wouldn't recommend the restaurant. The food is mediocre and the atmosphere isn't pleasant. The bar is better.

I guess if your a swinger... 9/1/2007

I have heard that this place is a big gathering place for a group of swingers. This could explain the magenta bathrooms with small trashcans between the urinals filled with Trojan wrappers. The food is awful and expensive. The servers must be gold members of the swingers club because they are certainly not interested in working there. Pros: might be a good place to join a wife swap group Cons: read the review more

Ugh...Not Returning 8/17/2007

We went to La Fonda last week over the lunch hour for a friend's birthday. Heard it was good food and thought it would be different from where we usually go for lunch. When calling to give them a heads up that 10 people would be heading over, the person who answered the phone sounded very disinterested and bored, but that didn't deter us! Upon arriving, they had a table set up for us and the server was nice. However, she didn't tell us that sour cream and guacamole would cost extra. We inquired and she said it was included. She also promised the birthday girl ice cream, but never delivered it. The food was okay - I tried the Loborrito, but wasn't impressed with the watery sauce. My fellow diners were not impressed either. Plus, there were flies buzzing everywhere which made it difficult to eat. We won't be returning. more

OK 6/19/2007

This place is OK. The food is OK, service is OK. I'm guessing the bar is what is keeping them in business. \r My food tasted reheated. Not fresh at all.\r \r For Mexican-American food, Boca Chica is better and worth the drive to the West Side. more

Scandavian Mexican Food 6/13/2007

Bland, bland, bland. Portions are big, sure, but if you want any zip or any authenticity (or any taste) this is not the place for you. This is the place for nice older Norwegians who like their food a pasty white color. \r \r The service was so-so. The ambience was forgettable and non-offensive. \r \r There was plenty of parking though. more

Bad food, worse service 6/8/2007

My brother was in town from Okalahoma and wanted some good Mexican food, so we decided to try this place. Bad choice! The food was just so-so and the service was worse. When I asked our waiter what a chili relleno was, he said something about pork and corn hash. I said "isn't it a pepper that's breaded and fried with cheese in it?" and he said "no, that's a tostada". I was confused because I'm new to that dish, but thought "okay, he must know better since he works here." Wrong! He came back after a couple minutes and said he had made a mistake and that I was right. That was my first clue that things weren't going to go well. On top of that, he never introduced himself, disappeared for almost our entire meal and literally threw a straw on our table from about 5 feet away when I finally flagged him down to ask for one. He never once asked if we needed anything and ignored my empty drink on the edge of the table for a long time. As far as the food goes, I had to get a side of sour cream just to add some taste to the beef burrito and chicken enchilada on my combo platter. The only decent thing we had the entire meal was an order of fried ice cream. I can't understand for the life of me why it was so busy (Friday at 6:00pm)!! Although, looking around, all I saw were white faces - no Latinos. Now I know why. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone and will never go back...ever! Pros: parking, fried ice cream Cons: food, service, ambience more

Were talking about real mexican food, not Taco Bell. Large portions. Priced right! Great down stairs, for after dinner. Great date place more

just so-so mexico 8/17/2006

Not sure why everyone loves the food here. I go to the bar for the karaoke, and the friendly staff. It's a fun local bar. Nothing fancy/upscale. I tried the tacos and prefer El Loro's down the street--much tastier and better value. Pros: location, parking, staff Cons: cuisine is too hyped up more

The worst overall 8/3/2006

This is the one of the worst restaurants I have ever gone. FOOD? The portion is extremely small and they taste like military food. The service is also terrible. The stupid server kindly reads out your check amount so that everyone in the restaurant knows that. Pros: good parking Cons: bad food bad service more

Margaritas can only get you so far. 3/23/2006

I haven't lived in Minneapolis that long, but if this is the ""best Mexican"" food here then i am in trouble. To put it in a nut shell, everything tasted like it was from a can. Nothing that I tasted ""homemade"". If they did infact make their food fresh then they definitely didn't get their recipes from a real Mexican. Simpily put this is mediocrity pushed of on people who don't know any better. Pros: Its clean, Fast service Cons: See review more

  • La Fonda was originally established as "Holly Inn" in the spring of 1976.

(La Fonda de Acebo) Octaviano "Otis" Trujillo, one of the original owners, re-established La Fonda de Los Lobos in May of 1992. (The Inn of the Wolves) Otis was born in Taos, New Mexico where "Mama Feloniz" still resides at the tender age of 83 surrounded by two of her four children and still enjoys good health.

Inspired by his late father Ruben, Otis moved on to Denver, Colorado where he learned the restaurant industry and resided until the move to Minnesota.
