This place makes me angry. Good thing there's punching bags. 8/10/2010

Well, if I'm being honest...this gym really isn't that great. It is rarely clean and always has an unpleasant mix of smells including sweat, bleach, and feet. The staff is friendly enough, tho, not that attentive. The trainers push for you to sign up for packages a little too aggresively and, once you do sign up, offer very little in the way of help. It feels like once you've paid, you're no longer important becuse they have your money, already. Kind of an ""On to the next..."" mentality which doesn't work for me, at all. That said, I've worked myself into a position where my membership is only $9/month for life, which is a pretty good deal, poor as the gym maybe. Enter at your own risk, you've been warned. more

The worst! 3/15/2010

Truly the dirtiest gym I've ever belonged to, and I've belonged to a lot of gyms. The locker room is really disgusting, like, afraid-to-touch-any-surfaces disgusting. Its floor is always littered with tons of trampled, dirty paper towels and yet, paradoxically, there are never paper towels in the dispensers. The hot tub is rimmed by an oily brown foam with hair and bandaids in it. The showers have hot water 50% of the time. The worst was two weeks ago: I arrived on a Saturday morning and there was feces in one of the shower stalls. Someone had actually defecated in an open shower. I told a staff member and he said, “Yeah, we know.” When I left the gym two hours later the feces was STILL THERE! It was a Saturday, in the middle of the day, and the gym was fully staffed. I counted four employees sitting in the office at the front of the gym shooting the breeze. I had finally had enough, and called to cancel my membership (you can’t do it at the actual gym; Bally’s is the only gym I’ve ever belonged to who has that policy). When I joined, the trainer who signed me up had been dismissive about canceling one’s membership. He said something like, “Oh you just have to pay an early-termination penalty, it’s like fifty bucks or something.” That’s about what it was when I had canceled my membership at 24-Hour Fitness, so I didn’t give it a second thought. When I called Bally's corporate to cancel the woman I talked to wanted FOUR HUNDRED NINE DOLLARS. What the Hell? I asked if there was any way to reduce or nullify the cancellation penalty. After all, I wasn’t quitting on some whim: they had failed to hold up their end of the bargain by being a viable place to work out. She said they could reduce the penalty to $250, but that it would go down as a “debt settlement” and that it would negatively affect my credit score. So now I’m stuck. I wish I could join a different gym, but I can’t really afford to pay for two gyms at once, and can’t afford the 400-dollar cancellation penalty right now. The amount of money involved isn’t really enough that it would be worthwhile to hire an attorney. I guess I’ll just keep paying. I feel the farmer who’s bitten by the snake in the Aesop fable, and the snake says, “You knew what I was when you picked me up.” Only I didn't know. I didn't even know there were gyms like this. But you do! Please: don't ever join Bally's. They are the sleazy loansharks of the fitness business. They'll make it seem really easy; they'll make it sound really cheap. Well, it's really cheap for a reason, and by the time you realize why it'll be too late: they'll have you in their clutches for a 3-year contract. Don't go down that road. DON'T JOIN BALLY'S. Pros: Relatively cheap Cons: Filthy; lazy staff; deceptive membership practices more

Disgusting!!!!!! 5/15/2009

I have been a member at Bally's for about 8 years now. I signed up at the Puente Hills location which is clean and wonderful. I moved to West LA and the experience I've had so far has been horrible. At the other locations I would shower and change there, but now I don't even want to step foot inside the locker rooms. They are so dirty and it seems as if nobody does a damn thing about it. The people that work there are really lazy and it seems as if they don't even want to go in there because it is sooooo nasty. Please don't get me wrong, I have been in the military and lived in close living quarters and the whole bit, but this problem is just gross. If you come to this gym I would recommend just working out and leaving because the sight of that locker room is unbearable. Pros: Decent equipment Cons: DIRTY DIRTY Locker room more

Good affordable place to work out 3/15/2009

I just joined this gym a week ago but was impressed by the fact that it was so affordable. The staff was so willing to accommodate my requests and made me feel welcome...I like the facilities, and the fact that there are a good number of people there at any one time - without it being crowded or overbearing. I feel comfortable at this gym and didn't really recognize the reviews written below, though I noticed that a few of the really negative ones were written about 4-5 years ago. Most likely that accounts for the way different review of mine! I like this gym and think you will be hard pressed to find something comparable in the neighborhood for this price. Ongoing deals make this a great place to join. I was paying a lot more at the YMCA before I discovered this place! ;) Pros: Example: best croissants in town Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

It's ""Ok"". 5/23/2006

I am a member of Bally's and truly appreciate the fact that it's still one of the more affordable Gyms in the area. My only complaints are that the machines are a bit rundown, and the locker rooms could be cleaner. Affordable, but this location needs a remodel. Pros: affordable, location Cons: locker room, needs a remodel, run-down more

below average 9/2/2004

I've been a member at Bally's for over 10 years. They do try to keep up with current equipments and fitness classes. However, in the last few years the hiring of staff memebers have gone down hill. Management is pool and the staff is unfriendly. Some are rude to you if you have questions regarding the gym. The cleaning staff (male) is constantly talking and working out on their job hours. You don't even want to step into the locker room. Here are just few things I've experienced over the years. One things is for sure, no renewals here. Pros: equipments, inexpensive Cons: , locker room, crowded more

Stay away. Far, far away. 7/8/2004

I've never been so dissastisfied before! It got to the point where I was so frustrated, I stood up, ripped the contract I had started to fill out and walked out. The club was poorly ventilated, but the WORST part is the STAFF. They were pushy and uninterested in my fitness goals - it made me feel extremely uncomfortable and ignored. For the amount of money you'll end up paying, I strongly recommend going to ANY of the other fitness clubs instead (24 Hr, Spectrum, Bodies in Motion etc). Pros: Location Cons: , Rude Staff, Ill ventilated more
