Editorial review from Citysearch 6/14/2012

Claude was our server and he was excellent in his recommendations and service. Since we were talking business his timing on taking orders, delivering our meals and clearing out table was outstanding and didn't interupt our dicussions at all. Very intuitive. more

My husband and I were in Nashville for 5/31/2012

My husband and I were in Nashville for a couple of days and made a fantastic decision to eat at your restaurant. It was simply delicious. My husband had steak and I decided I had to try the shortribs. The meal was perfect. Also I would like to praise the barbeque prawns we had for an appetizer. more

amazing customer service!!! 5/11/2012

jimmy Kelly's clearly puts its customers first, and you don't have to be royalty to get royalty treatment. more

Great Restaurant! 5/4/2012

As travel host of Nashville discovered recently, the reputation as one of the Grand Old Restaurants of Nashville is very well deserved. more

It was ok but NOT worth the cost 2/8/2011

This is from eathing there Tuesday Feb. 8. Ok so i went to Jimmy Kellysfor the first time and have always been looking forward to the experience since its always been something to look forward to in Nashville\r \r BUT everything outside the server was awful! TONY was our server and he wasgreat but everyone's steaks were over cooked even after we were assured they were the oldest steak house in nashville(thinking they would do everything right). The sea bass was WONDERFUL but all the steaks were over cooked and when someone is paying over $300 for 4 of us i felt really bad to send my steak back even though the buyer asked how eveyones steak was because \r \r he knew mine was well done even though I asked for medium. \r \r Basically the only highlight of the dinner was the madre dee ( however that is spelled) I've been to many an NICE dinners out and this one ended up being way too expensive for what was delivered. I personally think I would have recieved better cooked steak at Outback or Logans.\r \r I feel bad to say that because I always wanted to go to Jimmy Kellys and I was horribly suprised at how bad it was. I really wanted something better for the amount of money that was paid to eat there.\r \r Our Server was great and if people are in to dining for the server and their personality then I think this place is good. more

reading reviews 12/27/2010

I have NOT been here however we have a gift card we plan to use. Why I am writing this now is these reviews are so extreme. Either very good or way bad. I am leaning on the 1-10 rule where 1 unhappy person flaps lips with a bad review but 10 were pleased and did not write more

Jimmy Kelli's 12/23/2010

I just read these reviews and couldn't believe it, but then again I can because people love to take this opportunity to bad mouth other people. All I can say is we went here two years ago for our anniversary and are going back this year. It's New Years eve and we had awesome food and service. They treated us with respect and I don't think they are racist. Our waiter was so sweet and very funny. I highly recommend Jimmy Kelly' s. more

HORRIBLE experience at Jimmy Kelly's 8/8/2010

This restarurant came highly recommended for our 23rd wedding anniversary in Nashville. We made reservations for 7:00pm and arrived around 6:50....we were seated immediately by a very nice hostess... the waiter came and took our drink orders, he too was very nice and attentive.......then we ordered salads, again, they were excellent and we were looking forward to our dinner.......\r \r Then, we explained to our waiter that my husband MUST have his steak well done, something, that the waiter said would be NO PROBLEM........the chef would just have to ""butterfly"" the steak. Jeremy ordered a filet, his favorite and I ordered a blue cheese stuffed filet. When the steaks arrived, Jeremy's steak was tough and FULL of grissle......there is no way that it was a filet!! The waiter was very apologetic but Jeremy was totally ""put off"" by the steak and didn't want anything else. \r \r What upset us the most was the fact that the owner/manager was there the whole time, speaking to his regulars, and never came over to check on us....even though he knew that we had a problem! This is definitely a ""good old boys club"" instead of a fine restaurant........for really good food, go to Merchants, we did the next night and the food was FABULOUS!!! more

Where are these bad reviews coming from??? 3/17/2010

My husband and I have been going to Jimmy Kelly's for years. We actually got engaged after dinner there. We have consistenly received excellent service. Fred is usually our waiter and we request him when we make a reservation. The steaks are always cooked perfectly. We have ordered the standard menu, ala carte, and we have been in for the restaurant week menu. It is one of the few places that understands the proper pace of a meal. You have ample time to finish an appetizer before the salads are delivered, etc. If you are looking for a quick steak dinner, try Outback. Pros: Excellent service, steaks, corn cakes more

This place sucked 1/14/2010

We changed our 9:30 reseervations to 10:00 and showed up at 9:50. The host was about to seat us, when the manager or whoever he was just showed up and stated that the kitchen was closing. Why do you accept 10:00 reservations and not honor them. No apologies, no come back tomorrow. No nothing. It made me think that it just was the fact that we were a young black couple. Maybe he did not intend it to be this way, but I thought it was racist. Pros: Valet parking- courteous Cons: Everything more

Makes Nashville look bad 1/13/2010

We had a reservation(7:30), were told it would be a ""minute"" were seated at 8:00. Waiter was extremely rude. Table had a draft under it that made it feel like outside, it was 30 degrees outside. Food was terrible. Steak was ordered Medium Rare, was closer to Well. Had no taste. Could not send it back b/c the waiter never returned. Worse waiter I have ever had. Got the bill for 70+ for two people. Would have been 100 times happier with a Big Mac and Fries. Would never suggest this place to anyone. Nashville has way too many other good places to eat for anyone to patronize this dinosaur. From the looks of their reviews not sure how long they will stay open. It was easy to park, if you mess up valet parking then you have issues. Pros: Valet Parking Cons: Everything else more

They do not make you feel very welcome! 1/2/2010

Mike, the waiter, was over his head. Having heard this place was great we drove from St. Louis and they never seemed to even realize we were paying for the event. The steak was better than the sea bass, but this place could have been something special. Until, I read the reviews, I just thought it was us, or we just didn't drink. It turns out, the poor service is the standard. Good luck to them in the future? There are too many choices on ways to spend $100 + Pros: The steak was good Cons: We felt like we were imposing more

Terrible Food - Golden Corral has better food! 7/9/2009

We went to Jimmy Kelly's for a business dinner with a supervisor from New York. We had heard how great the food is and the johnny cakes.\r \r What a disappointment! The johnny cakes were just coin-sized corn bread with some sour taste. The waiter suggested an appetizer samlpler platter. We got a platter of cold shrimp w/ average cocktail sauce, fried oysters, overdone crab cakes and bbq shrimp. The bbq shrimp was good. \r \r I ordered the half fillet with salad. The steak tasted like it had been boiled or fried, had absolutely no seasoning and was not worth $20...in fact I would not have paid 50 cents for it.\r \r The twice baked potatoe had chunks of horseradish or garlic which made the whole potatoe inedible. \r \r After leaving there I was ready to go somewhere else for dinner. I just had a Boston Market frozen dinner with beef tips and that dish had 300% more flavor than what I had at Jimmy Kelly's. \r \r The waiter was entertaining but certainly did not make up for the bad food. I wanted water to drink and he left the small 4 oz glass on the table rather than bringing a larger glass. Certainly not worth the 18% gratuity ($95) added to our bill.\r \r Save your money and go to Golden Corral! Pros: Nice Waiter Cons: Food more

Terrible service and dinner 2/19/2009

My steak was not done and I did not eat one bite. Waiter never returned to offer more drinks (despite empty glasses) or refill of corn cakes. He only returned to offer dessert. Never inquired why I had not touched my steak. Our small rooms had 1-2 empty tables at all times, so bad service was not the result of being too busy. I emailed complaints on Monday with no response. When we left and voiced our complaints they were left on deaf ears. more

Side of the Road Steak 12/21/2008

Went to Jimmy Kelly's for a ministry Christmas party, traveled 120 miles to get there. Was seated right away in a room way, to small for our group, my chair was bumped so many times I lost count, some where sitted on each corners of table which meant you had two people trying to eat in the same place. My steak was the New York steak extra cut although I could not find anything on the menu about aged steaks, but my steak was obviously aged or just bad meat or aged way, way to long. I had got steaks that had been aged to long at other restaurants before and was able to trim the outer edge of the steak and it was OK, so I tried that here but the steak still tasted like something you would find on the side of the road and smelled like something you would find on the side of the road. I only took two bites, which I had never done before, did not send it back because I did not want to seem ungrateful to the ministry that was paying for my meal. Even the ice tea was bad, was not sure if it was carbonated or just old. One more thing when I ordered, I first order a baked potato but then ask my waiter to change my order to french fries and he said ""yes sir"" it was like you hear black man say ""yes sir"" in the movies about slaves like roots, which made me very uncomfortable.\r \r This is the first time I have ever wrote a review for a restaurant, but this restaurant was so bad I had to. I have traveled all over this country and the first thing I ask when I get to a new city is where is the best place to eat, I even have friends call me from different cities asking me where to eat in that city. I think you could get a better steak at waffle house.\r \r Do not know were the good reviews are coming from unless from Jimmy Kelly's owner.\r \r pros: Was seated right away\r \r cons: To many to count more

$400 bill - R OACH in Ice Tea - not even so much as an appology 9/17/2008

This establishment ruined my parent?s 50th wedding anniversary. On arrival the reservations we had made and reconfirmed were ignored. The outright rude wait staff bumped our chairs so often it felt like a crowded subway. Wait is the operative word for how long it took to get drink refills of which we only got one. Thank God; because mom?s tea had a R OACH floating in it. I grabbed the waiter who quietly scurried it away and I kid you not . . . . returned with the check. No apology, not even so much as an acknowledgment, they even CHARGED FOR THE TEA. Five people, $412.18. Pros: good corn friters Cons: over priced, bad service, diregarded reservations more

Still a good Nashville tradition. 3/31/2008

Knew two generations of owner/mangers. Found the same good food and clever waiters but new manager/grandson not very hospitable or accomodating. Guess since I moved away and not a regular to him, we didn't deserve consideration. Manger/host acted interested then kept us waiting at the bar for an hour. Don't vary from the steaks, it's still a steak house. Pros: Good food, good service, long wait. Cons: Need to be a regular to get attention. more

Two bad experiences! 1/25/2008

I gave Jimmy Kelly's a second chance after having one bad experience, but I will NOT be going back there. It took almost 2 hours to get our food and when we finally did get it the order was wrong and the food was cold. My date ordered his steak medium and it was almost burnt and cold. I ordered a filet and I got what looked like salisbury steak. It was NOT a filet. The restaurant wasn't comfortable either. Even with the fireplace going, it felt like that had been hanging the meat in that room and they refused to turn the fan off in the room where we were the only ones in there. The waiter was very nice but he was obviously frustraed with the management and the kitchen. We confronted the management before we left which is something I rarely do, and they were rude to us! There are waaaay too many steak places in Nashville to waste a penny on this place. I wouldn't go back if they paid me. Pros: Very friendly waiter, but was he was frustrated with kitchen and management Cons: Rude management, slow, poor quality, poor service more

DO NOT GO THERE! HORRIBLE SERVICE AND FOOD! 12/15/2007

I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT! I have had bad experiences before, but this one is the worst. It took two hours to receive the steaks we ordered and when we did finally get them they were cold and raw. Not to mention, our sides that were included with the steaks never showed up. I brought the dissatisfaction to the attention of management and they were incredibly RUDE. In fact, I was very polite in the way that I approached management, but again he was very RUDE. I fully understand that everyone is human and we all make mistakes, but it's all in the way that you handle your mistake that make them right. I have never been so insulted! I will never recommend this restaurant nor will I ever return! There are too may good restaurants in Nashville to waste your time and money here. Pros: vallet was good Cons: everything else was horrible. rude management. more

Terrible! 7/18/2007

I had heard that the place had really gone down hill, but I went last night with an open mind. Turns out that the talk was true. We had a terrible experience from the minute we sat down. Our waiter, who looked like he should have been in a nursing home took our drink orders first then returned 10-15 minutes later with the wrong drinks. At this point, we still hadn't even been poured any water. Eventually, we got the ridiculously oversized menus (which were cheep plastic, comparable to a Shoney's menu) and ordered. I told the waiter that I wanted the wedge instead of the side salad and then he just stared at me and said, ""what, you don't want no dressing or nothin'?"" to which I responded, ""what are my choices?"", to which he said, ""the usual dressings"". He was confrontational from the start. He then brought out the ""famous"" corncakes which tasted like dry bisquick batter...awful. Our salads were decent, but the bleu cheese dressing had no bleu cheese flavor. My filet was served solo on a big white plate...great presentation...with my baked potato missing. He brought me one a few minutes later. I asked for medium rare and it came out medium well, almost well done. I've had much better steaks at Outback, Longhorn, even J. Alexanders. My friend didn't get his meal until almost ten minutes after us because ""the kitchen messed up"". The waiter had no clue who had ordered what and had to ask us what we had. Our tiny water glasses were empty much of the night. There were gnats flying all around our table with one landing in my wine glass. Service was slow, nonchalant, and confrontational of all things. The restaurant looked dirty, stains all over the carpet, dust on lamps, furniture, etc. There were busboys and dirty dishes near our table all night...disgusting. The lone bright spot was the blackberry cobler. Its a shame that this Nashville institution has fallen so far. For the same price you can go to Ruth's Chris, The Palm, etc...do it. Pros: Blackberry cobler, but that's all. Cons: Service, cleanliness, food quality, food preparation. more
