I work here and can agree with a few people 9/7/2009

well yes the food is great to you people who say the bagels were hard and felt like they were left out for a day your soooo wrong we made our bagels fresh everyday no joke the bakers come in at 3:30 in the morning so tell them there not fresh but yes i have to say some of our employees are very rude and not attentive to the customers but its hard to find good help so sometimes we have to deal with the low lifes who work for us and as for waiting people need to learn patience yes on a busy day you may wait 10 mins or so im sorry but thats buisness believe me we try to hussle the line but sometimes we get large orders that take a few mins to make but overall its good food and ok servixe depending on who is working that day i am marks daughter and i have worked there for about 5 years off and on and yeah i have had confrontations with a few customers but it happens but i highly suggest this place to anyone thanks for the buisness people without yall we woulden't be here so please come back to see us :) Pros: cheap prices good grub Cons: the building is in need of a tear down.... more

Terrible service, terrible bagels!! 8/18/2009

I had heard great things about the Hot Bagel Shop so a co-worker and I decided to try this place out for lunch. The customer service was terrible, they were extremely slow and would rather stand around talking than help the customers. Both my co-worker and I had an extremely hard time chewing these bagels...to the point that both our jaws were hurting. These were not chewy dense bagels some of the other reviewers wrote about, they tasted like they had sat out from the day before. Awful! I will not return. Pros: Good chicken salad Cons: Extremely hard, tasted like day old bagels, chewy more

Bagels served by Rude & Argumentative Owner 5/13/2009

After going to the supposedly ""hot"" bagel shop for over 20 years, there have been several instances where I have stood at the counter for over 10 minutes patiently waiting to be served while the employees stood in the back and chat. Today when I went to the shop and stood there for a while nobody even acknowledged me even to ask me if I had already been helped. Another customer walks into the shop and his order is immediately taken. Although this did not really bother me that another customer ""cut"" in front of me, I simply asked the owner ""am I invisible today?"" ""Will I get helped?"" She told me I was not standing ""in line."" Um, there are no official markers for a ""line"" and I was already standing there for 10 min. What did she think I was waiting for? She could have simply said ""sorry - I thought you had already been helped "" but after I gave her some advice (since I am a business man as well) to at least ACKNOWLEDGE your customers she began to argue consistently with me. Although I kept my cool and told her I am not trying to argue with her, I just wanted to be acknowleged, she still CONTINUED TO ARGUE WITH ME. Me, a customer of over 20 years. Well... not any more. I told her I was never going to her shop again. And I am also writing to the Better Bus Bureau about the way she treats her customers. They have EXTREMELY HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. And the owner has no business being in business! Pros: Nothing-Go to another bagel shop that will serve you better Cons: Horrible Customer Service / Rude Owner and Employees more

Authentic Bagels in Houston 4/27/2008

As a transplanted Jewish person from Chicago, one of the things I missed about the North is an authentic bagel shop. Bagels in Texas (and many other places) are cakey and taste like small loaves of bread that are merely shaped differently. (Hint, that is NOT what a bagel should taste or feel like.) Forget what the other reviews ridiculously criticized: you don't go to bagel shops to discuss politics with the guy at the counter, and you don't go for compassionate, perfect service (even though I agree that it might be a nice to share political ideals with your bagelmeister or receive decent service everywhere you go.) You go to bagel shops for bagels, and these are true, water-boiled, chewy, substantial bagels. Kaufmans in Chicago (Skokie) might be a bit better, and I am sure many corner shops in New York that likewise on a good day might trump these bagels, but The Hot Bagel Shop makes the best bagels I have tried in all of Texas. Get a bakers dozen, some schmear, and bring them to the office instead of doughnuts. Pros: Terrific, authentic bagels more

Good bagels served by scum of the earth 6/19/2006

As a member of the Jewish faith, upon my arrival in Houston I had no choice but to seek out the best bagels in town. Everyone pointed me toward Hot Bagel, which indeed, has the best bagels availble in these parts. That's not to say that they'll make you forget Wolitzer's on Flatbush Ave., but they're perfectly serviceable and yes, are really, really cheap. The downside in the service. These people seem largely oblivious to the fact that there are customers around; it's not even the joyous surrender of ""nasty counter people with personality."" On several occasions, I have had to wait at the counter for ten minutes before even getting my order taken, with people passing by me all the while; once, I was lucky enough to be told that they were ""really busy,"" and therefore could not take twenty seconds to acknowledge my presence. This may sound trivial, but believe me, it's not. I also am somewhat confused by the owner's insistence on wearing a Confederate Flag hat in a store that, on the some level, is hijacking the heritage of my people. Granted, some Jews played a major role in the Confederacy, but for the most part we are a people of tolerance and liberal values. I suppose that Hot Bagel is just a slice of Houston character that I will have to learn to love, like the Screw Shop's similar approach to customer service. Pros: decent bagels, inexpensive, only breakfast sandwich worth eating Cons: right wing politics, looks disgusting, people are strange more

Why can't they open a shop out West? 11/7/2005

While we were visiting Houston this past weekend, our friends took us to eat here. I wish we'd not gone because now I am craving their bagels! Hands down the tastiest we've ever had. The shop is small and unattractive but the food and prices are worth it. Stop in, you'll be happy you did. more

The Hot Bagel Shop is the wrong name 4/3/2005

Based upon reviews, I took a family of out-of-town guests to get breakfast here. Even though their name is HOT bagel shop, when the family ordered 6 toasted bagels, the cashier flatly and rudely refused to toast their order. The cashier did not offer any alternatives (we can, but it will take a while, etc.), she just said NO we cant toast 6. My sister-in-law was very gracious and friendly, yet the cashier continued to be rude to her. The food was okay, but not good enough to justify putting up with the extremely poor customer service. The next day, a different bagel shop offered to bake 3 dozen bagels for them to take with them out of town if they were willing to wait 20 minutes--dramatic difference. I wont go back. more

These bagels rock! 3/20/2004

While their hours are not the most conveinant (call ahead) their food is awesome and their prices beat the chain stores hands down... a bagel sandwich was about $3 as opposed to $5.50 at Einsteins. They have bagel dogs and little pizzas that kick it too. The service is friendly if a bit harried from the tons of people that come through. I had visitors that I introduced to the place that curse me for sending them back to their towns knowing what they're missing. Pros: Food, Value, Good for Carry out Cons: , Hours more
