Best

All the years I've been going the Hobbit Hole and all of it's successors, I have never had a bad experience. Best egg salad and tuna salad sandwiches in town. I just love this pl...

Here's the problem: the food here tastes like something I could make myself with basic ingredients from an average grocery store. And my cooking, I must disclose, is amateurish a...

Best Vegetarian food in Montrose Area 8/9/2006

This is the place to go if you are on a budget but want good food. \r My Tolkien Group went there and is coming back there again tonight. \r One meal there will make 2 meals for regular eaters or three meals for smaller eaters.\r My favorite soup is the gazpacho and I love the wrap with the 3 salads in it. The portions are huge! Pros: Great Food at reasonable Prices, Huge Servings, Friendly Service Cons: Better reserve when you come in a bigger group, you can't get fast seating. If you come by yourself come early, or wait for a long time more

pretty yummy 7/29/2006

Cozy hobbit-sized restaurant (almost literally) with ork-sized portions.... \r I went with a friend and we ordered 1 order of guac salad and 1 platter of fajitas and we were both totally stuffed. Food is pretty good and service was great! Go and see for yourself. Pros: good food, big servings Cons: very small interior more

It's okay..... 6/13/2006

The service was great. We just thought the food was a little pricey for a whole in the wall place. I never ordered a burger from somewhere where I had to pay 1.59 more for fries or fruit. Most places include that in the price. The burger was bland. Nothing special. We ended up paying $25.00 just for 2 burgers and 2 drinks. Pros: Sitting outside Cons: pricey for average food more

Much Love for the Hobbit Cafe 6/4/2006

This is one of my favorite joints for those lazy Saturdays and Sundays. The large guacamole salad along with one of their sandwhiches always satisfies. Their Dr. Pepper is perfectly mixed and ice cold. more

Wonderful! 5/25/2006

I went to The Hobbit at the reccommendation of a friend, who said that the La Crucia sandwich would surely become a favorite dish of mine. I decided to go with my mother, sat outside on the patio and had what was one of the best lunches I've had in all of Houston. My La Crucia was delicious as were the Spinich Quesadillas that my mother ordered. Be sure to go when you're extra hungry as the portions are rather big (but isn't everything in Texas?) and you have room for the homemade Key Lime Pie. Quirky decorations inside, and a wonderful, shady patio outside. Pros: Good Parking, Shady, Fun Atmosphere Cons: Slow Service, Bugs Outdoors more

Eh, well.... 3/22/2006

I really like the fish tacos here. They are great. The burgers on the other hand are very, very bland. Service is okay, not too friendly but they get the job done. It gets loud inside and you sit soooo close to people that you may want to stau on the patio. Beer is expensive. Pros: Fish Tacos, patio Cons: Burgers, Parking, inside more

European dining 3/15/2006

This is a place that we go to when we want to spend time with our friends. The service is paced slower than a rushed eatery, so think europe, think vacation. The staff is usually very friendly and are helpful with menu decisions. They do get busy on Friday nights - try a week night. Generous portions, their fish tacos are wonderful - they are very conscious of food allergies / special requests. There is something for everyone here. It's one of our personal favorites. Pros: Special diet needs, ecclectic menu, group friendly more

bad experience 2/11/2006

Everything was all right until we were seated. We waited 10 min. just to get the water, 20 minutes after we ordered our food to get our nacho, and then another 30 more minutes to get the enteree. Our waiter never even came by to check on us or to let us know how's the food coming along, considering the long wait. When we finally got to see him with our food, we told him it took very long, and he had an attitude, saying ""what do you want me to do? Saturday nights are very busy."" He didn't even apologize. With all the time we had waiting for our food, we were counting how long it took them to serve the table next to ours. 3 minutes for their drinks, 8 minutes to get their quesadilla. I think it was just our server, but we're never going there again! Pros: interesting Cons: very slow service, attitude more

Pleasant brunch in a hidden corner of the Houston 11/21/2005

I brought my dinner club Eight Friends Out to the Hobbit Cafe for brunch. We had thirty people, and although it was slight bit too nippy to eat outside, the staff saved us a number of tables inside. Then we enjoyed fresh fruit to start and a selection of delicious breakfast choices. I had the ginger pancakes, which I loved, because they were not overly sweet. My friend had the Salmon Benedict which she called, ""just perfect"". The Southwest buffalo wrap looked huge and the Migas tantalizing. We also had mimosas served with fresh squeezed orange juice. The desserts were giant-sized--not hobbit sized! My pumpkin pie with fresh whipped cream tasted just like my mother made it--and that's good! We will defintely go back again! Pros: Reasonably priced , Fresh food , Great selection Cons: parking limited, hard to find more

great hamburger 8/25/2005

I had the avacado burger and let me tell you, if you like avacado this is the burger for you. I think it seriously had as much fresh avacado as it did beef. Really fresh veggies on the burger and I got mine with black beans which were very good. My friend got the buffalo burger and we shared, I thought the buffalo burger was really good, I think I am going to get it next time. The brown rice was good as well. Haven't tried the fries yet, but I am hoping they will be the same caliber as the burger. Very friendly wait staff kept our drinks filled and were very pleasant. more

I love this place 7/18/2005

I have always enjoyed the Hobbit Cafe. I remember when it was the Hobbit Hole on Shepard. Actually, my mother sent my father to get her a sandwich from the Hobbit Hole when she was stuck in the hospital after giving birth to me. I have never been dissatisfied with the food. In the past I have found the service to be slow, but this has DEFINATELY improved in the past year. My mother and I will remain loyal patrons for many years to come. Pros: great food, affordable more

Great Food! 6/13/2005

I love this place. Great food and it's somewhere you can always go with your vegetarian friends. Sometimes service is a bit slow, but the food is always excellent. Pros: veggie foods, homestyle, outdoor seating Cons: no big group seating, parking lot pot holes more

GREEEEAAAT! 3/2/2005

I just love this place, the outdoor patio rocks! The service is very good as well. I like the herbal tea the best. The burgers are the BEST i've ever had. ever! Not to mention they give you so much food you can be totally stuffed and still have some to munch on later. I look forward to eating there all the time and tell everyone about this place. Great for the Lord of the Ring buffs!!! Pros: burgers, entrees, drinks more

favorite lunch spot 2/3/2005

the service isn't top notch, but i love the food. don't come here if you don't want to spend at least an hour... that's part of the charm though. it's nice to go to lunch and relax rather than be rushed through it. my favorite friday lunch spot! Pros: food, theme, relaxing more

where did the hobbit go? 8/29/2004

As i walk in, i try to look aroud and see if Frodo will be our waiter...but no luck. I am not impressed with their food. I had a salad that was nothing special although my soy hamburger was ok. I still think it was overpriced! Our waiter was not very attentive and the place has a crowded atmosphere. The lord of the rings theme is pretty neat although not impresive. I think this place is overrated. Pros: theme restaurant Cons: , crowded, overpriced more

Oooo...I'll have mine on Elven bread! 2/19/2004

Come to Middle Earth..., and have a sandwich. The Hobbit Cafe (formerly the Hobbit Hole) is one of the cool niches in Houston. The sandwiches are fantastic, and come in two versions. The SLIM is a regular sized sandwich, while the CLASSIC is huge. The menu offers tons of vegetarian options, but will suit us carnivores as well. I love the Chicken salad. The also serve Mexican dishes (I guess Hobbits are from Mexico) and smooties; both of which are pretty tasty. The Sunday brunch offers pancakes, omeletes, and standard breakfast fare with a natural foods twist. Service can be a little slow, but the food is generally worth the wait. Pros: good food, location, prices more

ALWAYS A PLEASURE 8/19/2003

Always a relaxing, fun lunch with good food--hugh portions and really nice ambience! Pros: good service, good food, good ambience Cons: nearby sewer smell, bumpy parking lot more

Great place! 4/29/2003

I am a regular diner at th Hobbit Cafe and I just love it. I am a huge LOTR fan and the ambience and food are great. ENORMOUS portions, cozy, wonderful food. Pros: Great food Cons: Limited parking more

veggie friendly hobbit hole 8/30/2002

Best described as a veggie friendly restaurant. It's not vegan but they don't pretend to be. Still, it's a healthier alternative and omnivore and vegie alike can enoy it. Yes, the wait staff can be hipper than thou but not to often. Pros: plenty of parking, good value Cons: bad parking lot more

Simple as Middle Earth itself 8/8/2002

You just can't go wrong with Hobbit Cafe...have a vegetarian, or even vegan friend or family member coming to town? Looking for a special place for lunch with an old friend? Or a special dinner with your loved one? Hobbit Cafe has something for everyone! From full meals, to wonderful sandwhiches, and the atmosphere can't be beat! Be sure to try their smoothies and carrot cake!! You just can't go wrong!!! Be prepared for a small wait for high traffic times: usually lunch, and around 5-7 pm. Cons: limited parking more

  • The Hobbit Cafe has been serving Houstonians for over 32 years. We have a unique restaurant which serves some of the best cuisine in town. Try our black bean nachos, monterey jack cheese, pico de hallo, jalapenos and sour cream. Amazing salads like the tropical chicken salad-fresh Spring mix, fruit, toasted almonds tossed in a tropical yogurt dressing topped with jerk chicken and toasted coconut. The Gandalf sandwich (avocado and mushrooms under melted cheese), avocado burger, buffalo burger and black bean burger are very tasty. Try the Caribbbean Salmon, grilled with spices and topped with jerk sauce, mango salsa and toasted coconut, valinor-steamed vegies piled high over brown rice and beans.
