Great neighborhood bar 3/18/2009

Great steak nights on Tuesday, Fried or blackend catfish for lunch on Fridays. They have a really good liquor selection, even several top shelf bottles. The Weekend bartenders are alot of fun. with the weather getting warmer it nice that they have two large patios to hang out on. Pros: Good Prices, Nice Bartenders Cons: bartenders take too many smoke breaks more

Best dive bar in town!! 2/14/2009

""GRIFF'S!! GRIFF'S!! GRIFF'S!!"" By the end of the night, my friends and I were chanting it. Been there twice during the summer, food is cheap and great. Wings, phillies, fries and rings all have my vote, especially with the gift certificate coupons you can find at a site that rhymes with westaurant dot com. Actually, the staff recognized us on our 2nd visit, and they were having pizza for some regulars and offered us some. Pros: Sweet collection of beer cans and old dusty sports flags Cons: None, unless you consider beers served in plastic cups a con more

Great sports bar! 12/19/2008

Griff's is a great sports bar in the heart of Houston that has lots of history. I have watched the Rockets two championships here and have gone along in a group bus to many Astros and Texans games. The people that come here are a great bunch, from old timers to college kids. I love the dive feel of it as opposed to generic looking bars. Pros: Ambiance, beer, St. Patricks more

A really fun place 12/15/2008

Griff's is a great neighborhood bar (even if you have to drive 30 minutes to get to the neighborhood, as I do). The staff is great and the food can't be beat. The Tuesday steak night is awesome. They have the best St. Patrick's week festivities around. e.g., golf tournament, Irish queen contest, parade, live music, Irish stew cook-off etc... There are enough TV sets to see all the sporting events at the same time (or at least the ones you are interested in at the time). They have even been known to have pudding wrestling on occasion. Pros: Full bar, great food, awesome ambience Cons: I hate to leave to go home more

A Home Away From Home 12/5/2008

I have been coming here almost as long as I've lived in Houston. Among the regulars I have made great friends who are like a family to me. This is the sort of place that will always give you a good time while you are there, and leave you with a memory to cherish. More than a bar, it is a second home. Pros: Great drinks, Sublime service, transcendant drinks, truly unique ambience Cons: None more

Best Bar in Houston 12/5/2008

Not only is Griff's the oldest sports bar in Houston (40+ yrs and counting), it's also the best. Pros: Cheap Beer, Good Food, Sports more

where everybody knows your name ... 12/5/2008

i've been coming here for a year now and think it's a warm bar with lots of friends who enjoy each others company ... the owners buy lots of shots for everyone and the bartenders are fast and friendly ... and the wings are addictive ... everyone's passionate about their sports teams without being arrogant or cocky ... there are fans of lots of different teams, especially college teams, so if you're an arrogant azz about things and can't handle your alcohol, you will be called out for it, which keeps it REAL ... all in all, the quintessential neighborhood bar ... more

A true neighborhood bar 12/5/2008

Griff's is a true neighborhood bar, the type of place that brings an entire community together. Wander inside and you'll see tatooed hipsters chatting amicably with lawyers in suits, college kids sharing a drink and a story with senior citizens, and everyone cheering like hell for the Astros, Texans or Rockets. It's comfortable, authentic. It's the type of place where everybody is welcomed and has a chance to be a regular if they just show up again. Pros: Beer, sports, shots, burgers more

Not as welcoming as you might think. BE CAREFUL 11/29/2008

This is, at first blush, a GREAT neighborhood bar if you live in the Montrose area. Very unpretentious, decent food, a place to root for your favorite team. And the people seem very nice - at least that's what we thought at first. However, there's a reason it's not very crowded. Be VERY CAREFUL which team you're rooting for, as there can be some distinctly unsportsmanlike behavior. We all have off days, but... there's nothing worse than a cranky ""dry drunk"" who isn't rooting for the same team you are - especially if you're not part of Griff's ""in"" crowd. Yikes. Be careful here. You may not be as welcome as you at first think, so don't let down your guard! On the plus side, if the management DOES like you, it may take years, but you will have their undying loyalty, no matter what your behavior is! So they can be true friends, it's just that it's a very selective club-- especially for a Montrose ""living-under-the-bridge"" bar. more

Never go to this bar! 11/29/2008

Make sure you are a fan of the teams of the owners and friends because NO ONE at this establishment has a sense of humor. I came to visit Houston for 2 weeks LOVING this bar until one bad experience where I will never come back. I come from a football loving town where most normal people enjoy the game and sport and also can have a sense of humor, including the opposing team. This is not the case here. I love the bartenders but besides that the negative presence of such unfriendly owners (and friends) made this bar a never again. I love me some dive bars, but this one is a dump. By the way Vern, Go Gators!!!! Pros: The owners and friends attitudes Cons: Good bar food and great bartenders more

The best sports bar in town 11/5/2007

Seeing is beleiving. Pros: Ambiance more

Very personal and friendly 5/21/2007

What is best about Griff's is the personal feeling to it all. One of the owners is almost always there, which makes a big difference. It is normally a relaxed atmosphere, but the folks can get rowdy, a plus in my book - especially for Rockets games. There's lots of Texas spirit there! Pros: Ambience, Spirit, pro-Texas Tech more

the place to go 5/11/2006

I went to Griff's the first time for a class and loved it, kept coming back with friends, and since the semester started in January the only Tuesday night we've missed was spring break. It's one of my favorite places in Houston! Pros: prices, steak, people more

Steak it is! 5/9/2005

This is a wonderful little sports bar. The food is really good as well. It has the usual bar foods but it doesn't stop there. They have fire grilled steaks and a loaded potato on Tuesday nights and awesome pork chops all of the time! Not only that it's cheap! So if you get the chance...go on a Tuesday and say steak it is! Pros: Inexpensive, Nice bartenders more

What a night!! 1/18/2003

I was at Griff's for the basketball game between the Rockets / Lakers. The crowd was standing room only and very loud. It seemed to be the next best thing to being at the game itself. Pros: good crowd, excellent hamburger Cons: bathroom more

Don't eat the pizza 9/5/2002

Liked the atmosphere. Great neighborhood bar. Beer was cold. Typical bar food of fried this and fried that. Burger looked like a good ""greasy spoon"" type that I would have liked. The pizza I order tasted identical to a grocery store bought Di'Gorno-type pie, which I really didn't care for. more

Griffs is a great neighborhood bar that provides sports fans a great place to watch games and enjoy the interaction with a diverse group of people. It is a relief from the cold big sports bars where you can get lost just going to the restroom. The griffs bus is the absolutely best way to go to an Astros Game or Texans Game. more
