nice restaurant - pass the word 12/31/2011

Lunch for two - mid afternoon - was very nice. The menu was well rounded with something for everyone. My butternut squash ravioli was very good with just the right amount of prosciutto and spinach and my husband was very satisfied with his sandwich even though he is usually hard to please at restaurants.\r Bloody Marys were tasty and we asked for iced tea (December) and ""no problem."" \r Atmosphere is quite pleasant. Huge windows, tables not crowded together, airy space and even though a gloomy, overcast day outside, it was cheery inside with fresh, real poinsettias on each table. \r Our waiter was attentive without hovering and service was good. I would have liked it if the maitre d' (or manager) had looked and acted a little friendlier; he stood at the edge of the room\r just staring and not at all seeming interested in the patrons with not even a nod to us as we walked out the door. \r Will go back again on a clear day so we can take in the good view of the Boston skyline as well as to try perhaps the brie pizza and perhaps the ambience of the very nice bar. Would highly recommend giving this place a try..\r \r more

We had a great meal at the Tavern 8/15/2009

We ate at the Tavern late on a Saturday afternoon when it was not crowded. We were promptly escorted to a prime table outside on the porch overlooking the 18 (or 27?) green and the Boston skyline. The view must be great at night. Our party of 4 was attended to by 2 servers who were very attentive, including staying on top of drink refills. I had the lump crab appetizer which was generous and tasty. And the wild mushroom and brie pizza, which was too big to finish and very yummy. The other 3 in our party were similarly stuffed and pleased with their choices. It was the perfect spot for us for an early dinner. Pros: attentive service, great view, yummy food Cons: a bit pricey more

Nice view outside; depressing inside..... 3/30/2009

I have been to the Tavern at Granite Links a few times. I like to avoid the hassle of dining room waits and inattentive wait staff by sitting at the bar. Every time I return, there is a new bartending staff - less experienced, less friendly, more sloppy than those they replaced. I don't know what the problem is, but there seems to be a revolving door as far as the staff goes with an undercurrent among them of really really disliking the ""management"". Food is ok if you stick with the inexpensive sandwiches and burgers; the overpriced entrees are just that - overpriced - stay away from them -definitely not worth the prices. As for the drinks, no consistency in wine pourage . Mixed drinks sometimes ok, but again inconsistent. Bar tending staff very very sloppy (may be the colored shirts they wear), lacking polish and a little rough around the edges, and in some cases seeming a little too familiar with the clientele There is often a feeling of being in some sleezy bar as on the few occasions I have been there, I have seen the same old men trying desperately to pick up much younger women. Really a put off. The same old red-eyed men hanging out at the bar makes one easily forget the nice view. I think with some really drastic changes in management, replacing the bland and uninspired chef, it could be a nice upscale oasis. But, as it is now, it is no better than the local bars one generally avoids. Pros: view Cons: everything else - food, drinks, staff more

poor menu/poor service 1/20/2009

my husband and i went for our anniversary. we expected upscale food and service. the waitress came over, flaming red hair, as rough as rough could look, and smelled of smoke. \r the menu was very limited. shrimp cocktail was a good bargain, however not crisp, yet rather ""whimpy"". chowder was good, but the meal itself was a huge disappointment. \r first off, i HATE balsamic, and everything was covered in it. chicken was dry, and my husbands marinara was the worst i ever tasted. \r throughout the meal, i kept getting the ""smoke"" smell from the waitress. did not seem an upscale type server. she was nice enough, but more like a ""pub"" attitude.\r very good coffee, but dessert was rather ""generic"" in flavor.\r probably won't go back. not worth the money for the service. \r no one looks happy there. that usually tells you something.... Pros: chowder Cons: less than expected service, food more

unprofessional service 1/20/2009

ii came here with the person who reviewed this before me; i also had to add my comments:\r i've been here many times before with friends, always hoping that maybe it was an off night, because i wanted to try a few different things. i've been here more for the service and outside atmosphere than the food.\r well, they seem to have a high overturn of servers, because there are a lot of new faces, and i don't understand why. i've had some really good servers here, but the last couple of times, they seem young, very inexperienced, and basically not interested in the job.\r this place should be a goldmine, a gem or a restaurant. instead, it seems that they just don't care-don't care about the menu (very small and unimaginative), don't care about the drinks (do not taste good, unshaken, etc) and do not care about customer service. \r yes, the food looks pretty on the plate, but the quality of the meat seems poor, and there is not much flavor. some of the specials are good, but the basic menu is plain, boring and tasteless.\r i no longer see the bartenders/servers that i have had in the past, who were overly consiencious and met every need. God forbid you run out of water, or your steak is overcooked or fries cold. you will wait...and wait...and wait.\r i've become very disappointed in the establishment, and am looking around for a place that actually cares about their patrons. Pros: soup/salad Cons: a young, untrained staff, unimagination to the menu, tasteless food more

Terrible Service, Horrible Maitre d 10/27/2008

Seated in a back room, which was okay because we were with children. The waitress ignored us. Never asked us how the food was, disappearing for extended periods of time which was frustrating because we were not in a position to catch her eye. Dinner overall took close to two hours with no dessert or coffee. We had a discrepancy over the amount of a gift card and the previously suave maitre d became aggressive bordering on abusive. He was accusatory, defensive, condescending and dismissive and then the waitress followed suit. I was shocked and will not return. more

Would never go there again 5/16/2008

Went to Granite Links on Thursday 5/15. We were told the wait was 25 minutes, after waiting almost 30 minutes and watching people walk in and be sitted, we asked the hostess why. She told us ""they seat members first"", we were not told this when we were told of the 25 minute wait. We were then told it would be another 30 minutes. When this snobby hostess walked away to seat a party of 6 who just walked in the door with no reservations, another hostess called us over and said ""come on I'll seat you, those ""members"" didn't look hungry anyway (they had walked in after the party of 6 and were waiting at the bar)."" The service was slow and the waitress would keep disappearing, the food was excellent however. When we finished our dessert we waited at least 15 minutes for the check, once we finally received it we waited another 15 minutes for the waitress to reappear and run the credit card. Overall the experience was not good(except for the second hostess), from the hostess to the waitress the service was very poor for what looks like a high class establishment. Other then for the view I would never go back. Pros: food was excellent Cons: unless your a club member, very rude, slow service more

Consistently good food 3/21/2008

I have been to the Tavern @ Granite Links a number of times. All of which the food has been great. Lunch and Dinner. The atmosphere is nice and the view is incredible. The restaurant and bathrooms are very clean. The wait staff is always very pleasant and knowledgeable; however they may want to reconsider their choice of attire. Seems a little sloppy. Overall a wonderful place and I will continue to frequent there! Pros: View! Cons: De sports bar the waitstaff more

bad taste in my mouth... 2/2/2008

I came fully expecting to receive impeccable service, and excellent food especially in the setting of a ""semi-private"" club. What we got was the opposite. In the location that the Tavern occupies, I can not believe they have such (what seems obvious) inexperienced waitstaff. The hostess looked mean, unwelcoming, the manager walked around like a mobster, more befitting in a north end joint with ""connections"". The food nothing worth writing home about, although the presentation nice. Not impressed. Got better things to do and better places to go with my time. Pros: view of boston skyline Cons: overpriced drinks, lousy service more

Great view - if you're lucky. 1/5/2008

""The Tavern is a fantastic place, with one of the most magnificent views of the Boston skyline anywhere -- if you're lucky enough to be seated by a window... or in the main room even. Our dining experience took place in a back room, without windows. They don't take reservations, so on a weekend you can expect a 15-60 minute wait and poor seating, in which case The Tavern compares with any standard hotel restaurant.\r \r Our waitress was clearly new and inexperienced and had no idea what she was doing. I ordered my steak very rare and got it back medium well. I sent it back and got a new serving without vegetables. I had to ask to get a steak knife, for water refills, what the specials were, for the wine list, etc, and she was rarely around. An ordered glass of wine was forgotten. The bar was understaffed, service slow, and the two bartenders stressed out and not nice.\r \r Food overall was so-so, served cold and without much inspiration, finesse or love. This is not a place to go for a fine-dining experience. Maybe our expectations were too high with prices of $25-$30/entree, but the food at The Tavern was barely better than your standard sports bar or diner. Next time I'll settle for a $10 sandwich or burger instead -- yes I'll definitely come back for the view and a chance for an outside table in the summer."" Pros: Great view! Cons: Terrible service, NO view, poor food more

A hidden gem.....with the best view in town!! 9/21/2007

I had no idea what I was in for......a romantic view of the entire Boston skyline and killer cuisine at honest prices. At a golf course?\r \r I felt like a hero bringing my wife to this place. \r The food was fresh....the drinks had a nice punch....and the service was terrific.\r \r And did I mention the view? Your nestled into the side of the Blue Hills set on a brand new golf course as you dine in a richly decorated room.....overlooking the entire city. The pricier places with a view in downtown have nothing on The Tavern @ Granite Links. \r \r You may even bump into a local sports star or 2...they have been known to frequent this place!! Pros: The atmosphere is incredible....fresh food....value...service. Cons: The manager was kind of in love with himself....but he didn't manage to take away from the experience. more
