I have lived in Nashville since 1974 and one of the first places locals told me to go was the Gerst House, when it was across Woodland, over near LP Field. Having moved here from ...

Great food, great atmosphere, and the kids were entertained 2/21/2009

I don't know what all the bad reviews are about. We had great service and great food. If you thought it was gonna be cheap your an idiot. You should have gone to McDonalds if you wanted cheap food. The polka band was awesome and the 3 small children in our party we very entertained by them. I can't wait for my next trip to Nashville so I can go again. Pros: Authentic food, Polka band, Kept children happy Cons: Frozen beer mugs made table very wet more

FOOD - OK, but watch out for the service staff or restaurant to bill more than what you paid. 2/18/2009

Very specifically, the food was good & in larger portions. However, I've had better sauerbraten. The waitress provided OK service. I added a 15% tip to the total bill (food, drink, and taxes), and used my debit card. When I checked the bank website the next morning, an exact 22% tip had been added. I called the restaurant, and was told by the manager that this was a normal practice for the bank to pend a larger amount to the account, and it would be corrected in a couple of days. I immediately called the bank, since I knew that this was not true, and the bank confirmed that they would ONLY bill my account for the amount that the restaurant had submitted. I WILL NOT be going back to a restaurant in which the service staff dishonestly adds additional funds to the bill. Pros: Food OK, but typically American-German Cons: Watch out for service staff that may bill you more on your debit card after you leave more

twice the price for half the quality 2/5/2009

I love German food and agreed to go to Gerst Haus to meet up with some friends who had never had authentic German food. Normally, I have to drive to Clarksville because Madison St. International Cafe has the only good German meals so I was happy to try a restaurant that was closer. Well, the service was horrible,. It took close to 10 minutes just to get our beer and after almost an hour we finally got our food. It was half the portion and quality of what I get in Clarksville and over twice the price. The next day I took my friends to Madison St. Cafe and got the Jager Schnitzel dinner special for $6.99 and they loved it...the only down side, they don't carry beer. Pros: They have beer Cons: the beer is the only good thing that they carry more

German Food in Nashville 1/30/2009

Although I don't work downtown nor frequent their restaurants, I've found on the three occasions I've eaten lunch at the Gerst Haus (over the past four months) that it has had consistently good food and service. It won't ever be a Berghoff (Chicago) or Hofbrauhaus (Newport, KY), but then Nashville probably has 10 times more Vietnamese than Germans. If you need a German fix, I would recommend this restaurant, or stay at home and cook it. Pros: food, service & parking Cons: access off interstate more

Great Food! 1/5/2009

My brother and I had dinner here last night (Sunday 1/04/09) at 5:30 pm. We both just loved it! I had been here before and had similar experiences. I had the Wiener Schnitzel (beaded veal) with Spatzele (German noodles) & white beans as my side dishes. It was delicious, though the Spatzele could have been a little warmer. My brother had Schweine (Pork Loin) along with some Sauerkraut on the side. He loved it! I sampled his food and also liked it very much. I also ordered the Gerst Sampler as an appetizer. I believe it consisted of Fried Oysters, Kraut Ball, Potato Pancake, and Ham Breads. It was all very tasty. We also got a pitcher of a Light German beer (can't remember the name) which was quite nice. Our server was a young woman named Kellye - who was very helpful and gave excellent service. This is a great place if you're willing to try something different. Not for someone who's just wanting an ""Applebee's"" kind of dinner. I highly recommend this restaurant - give it a try. Pros: The Food more

Don't use a debit or credit card! 12/17/2008

Let me start by saying I love the food at the Gerst Haus.now that that's been said let me say also that they Pros: Good food Cons: Lousy wait staff, questionable billing practices more

LOVED IT! 9/2/2008

I have to say that some of the reviews really almost turned me off to even trying this place, but I truly feel that they must have had a one-off experience. Maybe don't go at 2pm, but dinner time for us was wonderful. All of our food was fantastic, we got Weinerschnitzel, Jager Schnitzel, and a sausage sampling platter. We even had a guest with us from Hamburg, Germany and she thought it was very authentic food and she loved it! We went on a Friday night at 5:20pm and were promtly seated. Live Bavarian style music started at 6pm and my 2 year old lit up the place with her dancing. Our service was outstanding as well, drinks were kept full, we were asked several times if everything was ok and if we needed anything. Wonderful experience and I highly recommend it. Pros: Great Food, Service, Music Cons: A little on the pricey side more

My new favorite place!!! 7/25/2008

Do NOT listen to the bad reviews on here. People must be overly picky or maybe had a oneoff bad experience. I ate at The Gerst House for lunch yesterday with 5 co-workers. The service was AWESOME and the food was the BEST!! I had the reuben and it was by far the best I've EVER had. I can't wait to go back. My co-workers all really enjoyed their meals too. LIke I said, I'm already planning my next trip back and will probably get the Reuben again, because it was THAT good. Eventually I may try other items on the menu. I can imagine that this place gets packed out before Titan games, which would lend itself to poor service and not as good food. Kind of comes with the territory!! Pros: Wonderful Food!! Great Service. Cons: Wish there was a location in the suburbs!! more

Food Good; Service Awful 5/19/2008

My family of 4 made it to the restaurant around 2pm on Saturday. It was really slow with plenty of room. The hostess looked bored to see us and it took a while for the waiter to approach our table. He looked less than enthused to be there and his attitude did not change. The food was pretty good-a bit bland but good enough. I had really wanted to try this place but the service really left a damper on the meal. I would probably go back again-just hope for a different waiter. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Staff more

like review before, don't bother 4/14/2008

I, along with several collegues, made our way in rush hour traffic to enjoy some german food. It was a warm night for the season and I could see as I pulled in that the patio was filling up quickly. Thankfully there were still about three tables empty. I went inside and as I approched the receptionist, a waitress walked behind her and said, ""DO NOT put anyone else outside, I don't want anymore"". I'm thinking....here we go. So when the receptionist asked, I told her that the party wanted to sit outside. Now, I kept in mind that the weather was unexpected and staffing for outdoor seating would reflect that (longer wait). That was until I saw the dining room. There were 6, count em, 6 people in the dining room. That negates any lag in service. You would think that anyone working the dining room would jump at the chance for a table. Anyway, once the pregnant teenager finished cleaning her finger nails, she informed me that the patio was closed for a private party. I then asked, "" the entire patio is closed?"" Looking dumbfounded, she said ""yeah"" So I took a table inside. Then the waitress (another minor) brought over the menus and silverware and dropped them in a pile on the sticky table and left to join the chickens cackling at the receptionist's area. Pros: still can't find one Cons: Service, service, service more

Gerst House. Swallowed glass. Seriously. and worst service ever. 2/9/2008

Do. Not. Ever. Eat. Here. For some reason, I have given this place chance after chance to do better. Never again. I'm not a melodramatic guy. I'm usually really really fair. But I'd say 8 out of 10 times coming here, the service has been in the toilet. The only reason I kept coming back until now was it's where co-workers wanted to go because it was close to work, and the beer's cold and really good. Well, this past Friday night, my wife thought there was something ""sandy"" in her food. Someone joked that maybe it was glass. Well, sure enough she looks down and there's a HUGE chunk in her glass, with little splinters obviously sticking out. This somehow completely eluded the waitress. Someone had previously seen a chipped glass another night too, but we figured it was a one time thing. The waitress didn't do anything more than comp the particular beer. Well, she did offer to get the mgr, but then said she couldn't find one. Which seems to go along with several other reviews I've seen here. So there you go. My wife swallowed glass, and for compensation, no manager at all. Just a free partial beer and ""I'm really sorry."" I've been way too fair to this place, and will never make the same mistake again. Slow service is one thing. Eating glass is a whole other deal. Wow. Still can't get over that one. Cons: the glass. more

Unfortunately, consistently filthy. 1/29/2008

We actually like the Gerst; the atmosphere, the bar crowd, much of the food but not all .. the German is most iffy. But we have come to the conclusion that we just can't go back because the place is consistently filthy. The restrooms are filthy, no-one ever wipes down the bar, the tables are as likely as not to have stale beer on them. It's a shame, we liked to hang out there so much. Pros: Great atmosphere, fun bar scene, some food great .. some not so great. Cons: Filthy more

Was that Campbell's? 1/24/2008

I went to the Gerst Haus for the first time last night and I have to say I was somewhat disappointed. Our service was good, the server was very friendly and our food arrived promptly. I ordered the goulash and while it tasted alright (a little too salty) it looked like someone had opened a can of Campbell's soup, heated it and put it on my plate. Don't get me wrong, I like the soup but I don't want to pay $12 for it. I just expected a little more from the place. Other than that the experience was good. Pros: parking, service Cons: food just isn't up to par more

What a Neat Place !! 12/28/2007

We went to the Gerst Haus tonight and discovered a great restaurant which we will defienitely go back to ! Pros: Friendliness, Very comfortable place, great food, parking was good, very relaxing Cons: None, it was great more

LOUSY SERVICE 11/3/2007

I can't tell you how the food was since we walked out after waiting 30 minutes without anyone taking our order. more

The Gerst continues to be one of the most accomadating and enjoyable places to dine and drink! 8/14/2007

We have been coming to the Gerst Haus for years. There has been a few changes, which to our liking, has all been for the better! We have taken many guests and clients there, and they too have loved the experience, The friendly staff and cozy atmosphere makes you feel at home, and we have never had a bad meal there! It fills up on weekends and sometimes there is a wait for a table, but the bar is a wonderful place to wait it out in! More beers than you can imagine and cold frosty ""fishbowls"" certainly make waiting enjoyable. Pros: Friendly and personable more

2nd try still didnt' work out 7/14/2007

First time we went there the food was ok back in March of this year. The $ for what we had wasn't to bad. But the service was a -10. Slow servers you that you never see once they take your drink order for at least 10 minutes. Don't ask for an extra minute when ordering. It will turn into 10-12, it did for us both times. Never asked to refill our drinks. Never show back up even once to check in to see if you need anything else at all. Same waitress both times. This time tonight on 7-14-07 same issue. Kept notes. Here they are. Walked in at 8 pm, stood at the front counter for 2 minutes before anyone even noticed us. Sat down. 8:15 took drink orders, came right back with them. But once again water no lemon had lemon. Let her know we needed a minute to look at the menu. 8:25 she finally came back to take our order. He had the combination platter. I asked for chopped steak, medium with mashed potato's -gravy. 8:36 food arrives and I cut into my chopped steak. VERY WELL DONE. I tried to get her attention but couldn't. 8:49 she still hadn't checked in on us after getting our food. 8:50 wow she shows up! I asked how I ordered my meat and she repeated medium. I showed her it and also said I asked for mashed potato's -gravy and they were covered in it. She took the food back. Still no refills on drinks. 8:55 manager shows up, my food was comp'd. 8:57 replacement food shows up. Looks good! But instead of an 8 oz chopped steak its 2 small pieces of meat put on top of each other to look big and she took my silverware!! 9:00 can't get her attention. 9:02 husband gives me his fork, he stopped eating so I could. 9:15 she shows up and let me remind you never asked to refill drinks or how my food was and gives us the bill. I doubt if I will go back. Having older children we tend to eat out alot at a+ places. Normally our bill is around $75.00+ and a minimum of $15.00 for tip. more

Best kept secret in Nashville! They have over 20 different beers on tap and serve it in a giant frozen glass! And they serve real German food, as well as American. 6/19/2007

This has become our favorite place to get together with friends, family, co-workers or just to stop in for happy hour by myself! The staff are super friendly and make you feel at home! The food is always great, and the portions are grand and the prices very reasonable. And if you just want to stop in for a cold beer, you will be amazed at the selection of beers in bottles and on tap! Ask the bartender for a sample of some.....they know their beer and will take good care of you! This place has quite a history and people come from all over the world. We've met folks from The Netherlands, Ireland, England, Germany, Brazil and all over the U.S. Pros: Friendly service, fantastic beer selection, easy access to freeway more

My first visist was by far a better expierence. 5/7/2007

We had held a managers meeting there once and i had nothing but praise . Everything was great the food ,the service and the the restuarant itself was immaculate. But that had to have been 3-4 years ago ,what a diffrence a little time makes. After calling once and the phone ringing i know aleast 20 times before i hung up, i tried again, this time it was answered promptly my order taken professionally. It was a to go order that we picked up rather quickly. My wife got the catfish dinner ,fish was under cooked, she otherwise was happy.I on the other hand ordered a fried oyster dinner,it was horrible. Not enough of the undercooked oysters, that were cold as well as doughy, the fries were soggy and wheres the cheese in the macaroni and cheese. Not quite what i had in mind from gerst house that i thought i knew.Maybe if i wait 3-4 more years they 'll get it right again more

Gerst Haus: Get the LARGE PLATTER and share with the table. Try something besides the wurst. 8/29/2006

Gerst Haus is not a true German resturant; however, one can get some good German food. Get the large platter with a LARGE AMOUNT of EVERYTHING. This is the deal. The Schnitzel is good. Do Not get the bratwurst by it self that is like our hotdogs. Spend the money and get a dinner then you can at least say you tried the adult food. When we have gone something is missing and that is the Oktoberfest feeling. The building feels like you will get that feeling, but you never do. By the way I have gone to the Munich Oktoberfest 6 times. The problem is the waiter staff has never been out of Nashville, much less Germany. The party atmosphere is just not here. Another problem is SMOKING IS ALLOWED in the dinning room. As soon as you come through the door the smoking smell in gulfs you. The beers are ok. Plan to spend more money than original expected. That said, go to the Gerst House and try a large dinner and share it with the table then everybody will be happy. August 31, 2006 Pros: German food. Get the large meal and share. Cons: ALLOWS SMOKING in the building. more
