Best

This is of course, a Nashville institution. They have the yummiest burgers and the shakes are just out of this world! I love that it is still the old decor, although the restrooms...

Worst

My dad took me and my grandmother here last year because it used to be the ""hip"" restaurant when he was younger. This place was so disgusting... the seats and table were sticky ...

Horrible 9/2/2010

Horrible HORRIBLE service, In my honest opinion I could have made better food at home in my kitchen. I am not saying the food was horrible but there was nothing special about it all. On the plus side, the milk shakes are the best ive ever had. Please stay away from the food, my whole was not happy with the food. Did I mention the service was HORRIBLE? more

Horribly dirty and slow 11/21/2007

My dad took me and my grandmother here last year because it used to be the ""hip"" restaurant when he was younger. This place was so disgusting... the seats and table were sticky and dried up food was stuck to nearly all of the tables. The service was slow too... it was just an overall gross place. Oh yeah and my mashed potatoes were cold too. Not recommended. Pros: Old-fashioned feel Cons: Dirty, slow service more

Insects on the floor, don't go unless you want a food-bourne illness 11/18/2007

We went to this place because it was recommended in Frommer's. What a huge letdown. The food was tasted like it had been reheated several times. The decor is from the 40-50s but doesn't look like it has been cleaned since then. There was a stick in my green beans. We saw insects on the floor. Can't believe this place passed health code inspections. more

Long past its prime 5/30/2007

After a doctor's visit nearby, we stopped in for lunch today, since my father was craving a chocolate milkshake. The milkshake was good, but, when we saw the rating of 64 posted by the cash register, we should have left immediately. Admittedly, it was our mistake that we stayed anyway. The place is incredibly dirty as other posters have mentioned, the service was so horrible that I finally just went and fixed our tea and cokes myself, and managed to find some silverware behind the counter. A couple sitting behind us did the same. The young woman working at the cash register just sat and talked on the phone the entire time, ignoring the customers. The food was horrible--the chicken breast sandwiches were dry and rubbery, the roast beef overcooked and dried up, obviously left over from the lunch rush. It was all just disgusting, and we will never be back again. It is very sad what has happened to this place. Pros: location Cons: dried-up, tasteless food, really awful service more

Best ""Old"" Atmosphere 11/27/2006

Okay - so the food is what you could make at home, but the ""so old it's retro"" furnishings and the incredible milkshakes more than make up for anything else. Prices are also reasonable too. Pros: Classic Diner Cons: Could use a good scrub down more

Good for breakfast 8/20/2006

I like the soda shop, but stick to the breakfast menu. The decor is outdated, and honestly the place does look like it's falling apart...but it has a delicious, cheap, large variety of breakfast foods. Seating is always prompt, and my coffee mug was always full! The pancakes are great, but the hashbrowns look like the frozen kind from Kroger....but you cant go wrong with the bacon and eggs. Pros: Quick seating, breakfast menu Cons: decor, not open on Sunday, stop serving breakfast at 10:45am more

Avoid like the plague 7/22/2006

I was really looking forward to this restaurant, what with all the glowing reviews- was I wrong! Pros: None that I can think of Cons: The existence of this grease pit more

Not as great as photo depicts 7/19/2006

We arrived Saturday about 2:30 in the afternoon. From the outside the placed looked very quaint and ""old timey"", we were excited. Upon entering the place appeared uncleaned an abit more ragged than the internet photo depicts. We were greeted and seated quickly (still looking forward to the experience) gave our drink orders and proceeded to review the menus and make selections. When the waitress returned to get our order, we were then told we could only order from the daily special menu and they were out of several items listed. We chose quickly and ordered. After roughly a 25 minute wait, the waitress reappeared with our order (roast beef plate and a chicken plate, which didnt look to appetizing and tasted even worse! The chicken had clearly been under a heat lamp for hours (dry and rubbery) and the roast beef was cold and rubbery with no flavor, the potatoes were cold and lumpy, but on the bright side the frozen fried okra was hot and freshly fried! During the meal the waitress came over and asked ""yall want more of this tea before i pour it out?"" UUUUUH no thanks. Overall we found the place to be a very dirt 50-ish style establishment with food that seemed to have actually been prepared in 1950. Pros: Its located right beside a Krispy Creme doughnut Cons: Its located right beside a Krispy Creme doughnut more

Oh yeah! 8/16/2004

This is of course, a Nashville institution. They have the yummiest burgers and the shakes are just out of this world! I love that it is still the old decor, although the restrooms could be updated! The food is just awesome and a really great value! This is a really fun place. Pros: Yum, yum, yum, Awesome shakes, Great value more

FRIDAYS ARE THE BEST 10/7/2003

This is a great place to drop in and have some good ole' eatin'. Fridays are the best, they serve spare ribs as a choice in the meat and three. It does cost you an extra 30 cents, but its worth it. Pros: FRIDAYS, LOTS OF FOOD Cons: SERVICE LITTLE SLOW, CROWDED SEATING AREA more

Happy Days 2/7/2003

This place reeks of retro with a southern twist but the food is comfort all the way. I love to eat here during the week at lunch and the specials are good like the fried chicken. The only draw back is in the winter, I ate with my coat on because it was freezing inside. Perfect place to share a two straw chocolate malt with your sweetie ! Pros: casual, fast, inexpensive Cons: cold in winter, broken radios more

LookingForward2Nashville 10/3/2002

Love going to Nashville and stopping off for ""real"" food. We don't count fat or calories here--an all or nothing trip--and worth it. Whenever we are lucky enough to be in the area it is one of our first stops. In addition to the food we enjoy the fountain sodas--a real treat and the delicious ice cream sundaes. Leave the fat counter at home for this trip and savor a bit of the delicious past. Pros: Service, Food, Vanderbilt crowd Cons: parking at times more

Best Fried Chicken In Town 9/21/2002

I've been going to the Soda Shop for over 20 years and I still love it. Their fried chicken on Tues and Sat. is the best in town and their mashed potatoes are also great. If you're really indulgent, get a chocolate milkshake with your meal and die happy. Pros: fried chicken, mashed potatoes, milkshakes Cons: lunch wait, parking more

Elliston Places is awesome 9/7/2002

One word: milkshake. It's the best place in Nashville to get a milkshake. It's also a really cool place to eat. Good food, good atmosphere. more

Very good 9/4/2002

Their food is really great!I would recomend my friends eat here. They have great veggies and the service is great. It gets very crowded around lunch time and sometimes people are waiting in line out side. But its worth the wait! Its very very very good. Pros: Food, Inexpensive, Friendly Cons: Crowded, Extra Tables, Parking more

none better 9/3/2002

Almost nothing can beat a grilled cheeseburger and chocolate shake...except maybe the meat 'n three plate at Ellison Place. Don't come here if you want fancy decor, ""fine dining"" (whatever that means), or high prices. Awesome food with good friends always means a good time. Great place for Vandy alums to hang out. more

Best burger in town!!! 7/31/2002

This place has the greatest burgers and milkshakes ever. I think I will go there tomorrow! more
