Excellent Service, Food, and Atmosphere 2/5/2012

Nestled in midtown Atlanta on 7th street, just east of Georgia Tech, this European-inspired restaurant is a terrific spot for an elegant evening. I had the pleasure of coming here with my girlfriend for our three year anniversary, and the experience was excellent. The service was impeccable; our waiter was terrifically attentive without being intruding, extremely professional, and recommended great wine pairings with our meal. The atmosphere was very elegant, perfect for a classy evening meal, whether as a date or simply an up-scale evening with coworkers or clients. To me, service and atmosphere are actually more important than the food, as I go to a restaurant for an experience, and not just the food. Needless to say, however, Ecco topped off the evening with a wonderful menu. I love the European style offering of great cheese and meat pairings they offer. We got the recommended goat cheese appetizer, which was excellent, along with the three for 14 cheese/meat pairing. For entrees, my girlfriend got the Pappardelle and I got the Sausage entree, both very delicious. All in all, an excellent, elegant evening. You can tell they know what they are doing. more

Loved it! 9/17/2011

I have been to Ecco twice this past year and have yet to be disapointed. My boyfriend and I have always received stellar service and amazing food. This restaurant is definitely one of my favorite here in Atlanta. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who is intrigued by foods out of the ordinary, that are fresh, and never the same. Might I suggest, if it is your first time, as I do in any restaurant, always get the small bites to share and slowly throughout the night, if you like it, order more and move on to a bigger course! I truly feel that a restaurant's smaller bites are what distinguishes it from a good to an extraordinary restaurant. If a chef and his staff are taking the time and care into a smaller dish, you know the the entrees will be amazing! more

Meh 2/26/2011

From all the great reviews, I thought this would be super-awesome and it was a little ho-hum. There were some okay flavors, like in the lentil-chorizo ragout, but nothing really burst with flavor or made me say 'I would definitely come back just for this dish.' The service was very good once they sat us in the booth the waiter said he could not seat us in (likely so he could keep more people in his area). What got us off to a poor start was when they brought us cold (like fridge cold) bread. That is a big pet peeve of mine, and not something I would expect of such a highly rated restaurant. The picked vegetables were pretty good, but they were clearly pickled in pure vinegar. They were hard to eat, but addictive at the same time. The sausage pizza was just okay. Nothing special here. The dessert was weird. My wife is pregnant and I told the waitress so. They gave us chocolate balls with cognac in it. Okay, so the cognac is cooked off, but dark chocolate has a bunch of caffeine in it, which is not great for pregnant ladies. It also had an unsweetened cocoa powder on it that made it very hard to eat. We couldn't finish them. more

Weird attitude 5/3/2010

we got there at 8pm on a beautiful sunday evening and for some reason the hostess was averse to seating us outside. we said we wanted a table outside and she said the wait would be an hour. which was a blatant lie to discourage us from waiting for an outside spot. there was literally not one single person waiting ahead of us. so I said ok we will wait, and she was clearly surprised that we called this bluff. A table became available for us in less than 5 minutes, which she begrudgingly acknolwedged to us, but then she intentionally took about 25 minutes to clear it and seat us. It was so weird. The patio was full of people so it is a total mystery to me why we were unwanted outside. \r \r And ditto on the fern pizza - it's funky and no good. Plus the pizzas are teeny tiny. Pappardelle is great. Pros: ambiance Cons: service more

One of my favorites but... 4/26/2010

Let me first say, this was completely my fault, and not the restaurant's. I love Ecco. Think it's a great concept, has outstanding service and the space is beautiful. Went there recently for dinner and they had a pizza on the menu that had fiddlehead ferns, mushrooms, talleggio, and aged balsamic. I love fiddlehead ferns and their only in season in the spring, so we went for it. In my fern enthusiasm, I forgot, however, that I have an amazing dislike for talleggio cheese. I first had it on a hotdog at Ormsby's, and instantly vowed never to eat it again. Maybe it's different when it's not melted, but this over-powering queso has a fairly stinky taste and a REALLY stinky smell. And so much of food's taste depends on the smell. Thankfully, we had ordered a bunch of apps and weren't even that hungry when I made the boneheaded order... I could only handle two slices. Should have gone with the magarita pie. more

In a word....memorable 2/24/2010

I think for someone in their late-late 20's, I've had the opportunity to sample a nice array of Atlanta's top restaurants. I have a good enough memory, that if given a directory, I could probably list just about every place I've been to and whether I liked it or not. However, it would be a bit more difficult to tell you specifically what I liked about each place. In other words, if you ask ""why should I go there?"" there might only be a handful of places I could give you a convincingly definitive answer. Ecco is in that handful. As I'm writing this review it has been more than a year since my one and only visit, and that now seems plain irresponsible on my part. From that one visit, I remember the wood-fired pizza I ordered being quite good, but I couldn't tell you which one it was. My most intensely lingering recollection from the exeperience was the fried goat cheese with honey and black pepper. I've never had anything quite like it. These brilliant golden sweet little nuggets seemed so simple. Why aren't they standard fare at every restaurant? I wanted to order a bucket full of them. They are that good. If you're like me, and you find that some of these upscale trendy dining halls often begin to blur together, go to Ecco and order the fried goat cheese. Over a year later I still can't get it out of my head. Pros: Fried goat cheese, wood-fired pizzas Cons: crowded seating more

Great place , great food 2/9/2010

Ecco finally let me down... 11/18/2009

My last meal at Ecco was a suprising disappointment. We ordered appetizer/pizza and nothing the kitchen put out came together as a dish. The squid was a wannabe salad with lettuce and tomato thrown in and the pork belly- well, cut it up like Spam and put on rye toast can make for a fatty, dry dish. The winter squash on the pizza was terrific but the pie itself just lacked something. \r The meat and cheese tray we ordered is always delicious so we did not leave hungry (the bread is so amazing). I am hoping on my next visit I will have good food- I don't need to be wowed by how many ingredients you can add to something. Pros: Great atmosphere, great service Cons: don't show up without reservation- How dare you???? more

Wonderful Experience 11/14/2009

We recently held a Rehearsal Dinner at Ecco in their lovely ""back"" room. The food was wonderful and the staff was absolutely perfect. They attended to our every need. The atmsophere of the restaurant is very elegantly relaxed.\r \r In addition, the Sales Manager who helped me plan the event was extremely helpful and made the planning process a breeze.\r \r I would recommend Ecco without hesitation for a romantic dinner or for a group event.\r \r Thanks! Pros: Amazing food, staff and atmosphere more

What has happened to Southern Hospitality 9/1/2009

This was my first trip back to Atlanta in many years. I have a huge amount of fond memories of dining in Atlanta. Great food and friendly people enticed me to move there on more than one occasion. This was the second of two very sad nights out with friends in Midtown. The guy who brought us the water knew more about the menu than any one of the 4 persons who could have been our waiter/waitress. We are still taking bets on that one as we never seemed to consistently see the same person twice in a row. \r \r To say the service was poor would be an understatement and the quality of food was poor at best considering a Sunday night and light crowd, well considering anytime for the price paid. To top off the night the parking attendant was nowhere to be found so we retrieved our own keys to escape this train wreck of service. I still love Atlanta, but two bad outings in one week is unheard of for your fair city...now, where is that water boy. Pros: Fried Goat Cheese Cons: Not the Fried Goat Cheese more

Always outstanding 8/16/2009

I have been to Ecco many many times and every time it is great. Drinks are good, service is friendly and food is always outstanding. I have tried almost everything on the menu and can't find one item I would not recommend. our party was late arriving and even at 1030pm the kitchen was spot on. I even asked for a special vegetarian request not on the menu and it was no problem. I would seek out Ecco for a casual evening or a special event. Pros: Service, drinks, consistency Cons: Parking more

Unique Experience 3/12/2009

Excellent atmosphere and food. Was invited by a friend and had the pizza which was fresh and wonderful! Reminded me of a local restaurant in Tuscany. Great assortment of apps - calamari to die for! Urban atmosphere. more

Ecco is so 5-star! 3/9/2009

Yeah, I love this place, never been disappointed. I dine out 3-4 nights a week and always come back here to ""regroup"". I laugh when I see remarks that this place is expensive - when is the last time these suburbanites ate out - 1985? Try a steak joint - now that is expensive! Anyway, I love the App menu and the carafes of boutique wines. I love the Manager - sommelier Vajra, he always recommends something great and priced right (he's pretty funny too). The best way to experience Ecco is to walk in with a big smile, grab a nice drink at the bar, chat up the super nice bar staff (guys and girls!) and share about 4 things on the menu with a friend (starting with a thin crusty pizza)......doesn't get much better than that folks. Pros: Location, ambience, staff, service, food, wine list, image, patio Cons: hard to get a table on saturday night more

Truly Excellent 3/5/2009

I went to Ecco for the first time the other night on a strong reccomendation from a friend. She said she dines there often and has yet to be dissapointed. I did a little research and found out that they are owned by Fifth Group Restaurants, who own another restaurant in The Virginia Highlands, La Tavola, that I have been to before. \r \r Let me just say that I was very impressed. From the moment I pulled my car up to the valet (complimentary) to when I left, everyone I spoke to was extremely polite and genuine. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with a lively buzz coming from the busy dining room. Our hostess sat us along the wall where my wife got a great view of the open kitchen. Within moments we were greeted by our server who happily gave us first timers a quick rundown of the menu and wine list making suggestions along the way. We decided on a bottle of wine that the server informed us was only available at Ecco. I was a bit wary about this at first, but my fears were quickly put to rest when the bottle appeared, and the glasses were poured. It was magnificent. I can't remember the name, but I do remember that it was a traditionally Spanish varietal, but grown in California.\r \r Now onto the food. We followed most of our server's suggestions, and handed him the menus. Within moments our Meat and Cheese platter arrived, along with an order of Fried Goat Cheese drizzled with Honey and black pepper (A must have!). For our main entrees I chose the grilled tenderloin and my wife had the seared duck breast, and we shared a side of braised kale and some roasted potatoes. These too were outstanding and the wine accompanied the food beautifully. My beef tenderoin was cooked to a perfect temperature as was my wife's duck. Unfortunately we were too full for desert, but they did have a few interesting selections that I hope to try in the near future. I will definately be back soon. A truly A+ experience. Pros: Great All around. Cons: None really. more
