Best

The food here is outstanding, I have eaten here a number of times and never hesitate to go back. I can't say enough about the fried rice.

From a favorite restaurant to the most despised in Raleigh, all it took was a series of unfortunate events. Dining here on my birthday, the bartender offered a free bottle of win...

A Lovely Valentine's Experience! 2/19/2003

Our second visit to the D&D was for Valentine's. We were thrilled to get a reservation, and were seated immediately. The service was just right; knowledgeable, friendly, and not intrusive. Our appetizers and entrees were delicious, and beautifully presented. We were visited by the manager, John, as well as the chef; a lovely touch. We highly recommend the Duck and Dumpling! Pros: Menu, Service, Decor more

Reservations didn't work 2/10/2003

I made reservations for 9:00 and we were seated at 10:20 or so. They did give us a couple of free appetizer's but not until I went to them and asked them what the problem was. The food was ok. I will not go back there based on my experience. There were 7 of us and I felt quilty that I suggested the place based on previous ratings. more

mmmmmmm dumplings 2/9/2003

I can't say enough about the D&D. Visually you are greeted with wall panels and a deep bar of beautiful cherry. The lucky color red is reflected in the lights and behind flowing fabric panels concealing the rough stylings of the ceiling. A low wall topped off with glass partitions helps separate the dinging area and the bar area. And then there's the food. The pork and shrimp dumplings were succulent, the vegetarian spring rolls were snacktastic, the filet chinois in a garlic sauce was tender and tasty, and the shrimp kung pow was heavenly. It was a wonderful asian-food-fusion! Ginger and green tea ice cream and chocolate melting cake topped it off. The servers and management took wonderful care of us, and the price can't be beat! I'm off to suggest it to all my friends. Best Pros: food, food, non-smoking Cons: not closer to me, driving to Raleigh, non-smoking more

Will be regular. 2/3/2003

Went for the first time last Friday. Great atmosphere, great service (by John), and great food. Best of all they take reservations. more

Watch this place take off! 1/31/2003

The warm red hues and cool urban interiors are delightful. The Asian Fusion is high on quality presentation and nutrition. Then there's the service: quick and efficient. We asked for sauce to jazz up the house fried rice and the staff kept bringing us sauces until we had every sauce in the house! Pros: Intimate, quick, Inexpensive more

The Best! 1/30/2003

The food was incredible - fresh and totally authentic - Chef David had outdone hime self with every aspect of this charming restaurant. Pros: Affordable, Great Wine List, Fabulous Service Cons: So So Martini more

Disregard any negatives. 1/23/2003

It's simple, new restaurants aren't perfect and need time to get to where they want to be and anyone who can't see that is only trying to destroy small business, like the review below mine. I went in for lunch yesterday and was very please. The prices are fair, if not somewhat inexpensive, service was fine, the restaurant is very cool and hip. I recommend it, you will have a good time and enjoy your food. Pros: inexpensive, cool bar, good service more

Four Fabulous Courses!! 1/23/2003

From the half fried dumplings to the filet to the green tea icecream--everything was heavenly. We felt very taken care without feeling smothered, even with the chef himself making two appearances at our table. The wine suggestion was right on the money and while the portions were plentiful, none of the four courses we enjoyed were overwhelming. I thought the kung-pao shrimp was perfect as my main dish, but closely followed by the duck and the filet. The best part about the ambiance, I believe, was the lighting and the light fixtures. I couldn't help but wonder who did them--nothing less than artwork. 'Classy bar area and the manager, John Riggs, makes a great dirty martini!! As a side note, I noticed a very cozy side room just large enough for one large table and about 6-8 chairs that would be wonderful for a small group. Pros: chic but cozy, Attentive Service, Wonderful Food more

Don't be fooled by the hype... 1/22/2003

The restaurant looks beautiful, food is perfectly presented...and then it all fails. The service SUCKS...big time, and the food is such a let down. The owner should go back to the type of food he was preparing when he was in Cameron Village. It's got all the potential...trendy...good seating...but the food needs to be improved before I'll go back. more

Needed atmosphere in downtown Raleigh 1/21/2003

The Duck and Dumpling is a class act restaurant with a huge touch of NYC chic that goes down to the menu design of corrugated cardboard and mylar. The ambiance couldn't have been better, from the soft jazz floating into your ears to the view of the square in downtown Raleigh through the large street side windows, very nice. The food was exquisite (Moo Shoo Duck!!) all combining very unique combinations to tantalize the senses, the presentation was very aesthetically pleasing, and the martini selection was far from lacking (try the French Martini). Pros: Creative menu, great martinis, atmosphere Cons: nearby couple more

The best chinese in North Carolina! 1/18/2003

The Duck and Dumpling offers magnificent Asian fusion dishes in a warm and attractive environment. They are very happy to cater to the guests' wishes, creating delicious vegetarian dishes out of their menu items. The food was perfectly done and well presented. They have high chairs for the younger enthusiasts, but there is no children's atmosphere. more

Delicious Duck! 1/12/2003

You'll think you had stepped into a New York restaurant when you go to the Duck and Dumpling. Beautiful design, soft jazz, attentive service - what a delight. The food is up to the measure of the ambiance. In a party of 9 we had no dish that wasn't a rave. Fresh flavors, lovely presentation, all in all top-notch. Pros: Creative food, Atmosphere, attentive service Cons: difficult parking more

Trendy and Tasty! 1/9/2003

When I walked in, I felt a little ordinary, as the atmosphere and other customers were quite trendy. But, nonetheless, we were seated right away (we did have reservations) and were greated by a very friendly server. The menu is fabulous and reasonably priced, and it was hard to decide what to order! The food is excellent! I highly recommend the spring rolls, dumplings, duck and dumpling soup, and kung-pao shrimp. The pinot grigio is wonderful, and it and all the wines are priced nicely. I will definitely go back! Pros: tasty!, great service, good location Cons: too trendy, need closer parking, no chocolate desserts more

FABULOUS, but can be pricey 1/6/2003

the food was stunning - the sauce didn't overwhelm the incredible seafood, and the portions weren't massive. the presentation was excellent. WONDERFUL atmosphere. but i would bump this up to the next price bracket. if you ordered a nice wine (that the waiter suggested that wonderfully complemented the meal!), sample a heavenly appetizer, and try to save room for the tempting-sounding ice creams, you are well out of the $20- price range. but that's ok :) it's worth it. more

Great new twist to downtown 1/2/2003

I was quite surprised and pleased with my experience and the Duck and Dumpling the other night. The service was quite attentive while not being overbearing. Our appetizers came out within a few minutes and were so good we decided to oder another round before our entree course. The entrees were quite delicious with a classy simple presentation. I have already been back a few times in the past two weeks and plan on beng there again on Saturady night. more

Downtown Asian Eatery

Owner Message
  • Long before Fayetteville Street reopened and Hargett Street reawakened, The Duck & Dumpling was a favorite for busy executives at lunch, pre-theater crowds for dinner and romantic first dates that lingered until closing. The Duck was a catalyst for a new era of dining in downtown Raleigh in 2002 when Chef David Mao brought his contemporary spin on Chinese-Vietnamese home cooking. Now that Chef David has retired, his favorite recipes have been handed down to a new generation of Asian chef.

Chef James Yott Boyle has taken over in the kitchen, cooking not only The Duck favorites, but also his mother's traditional Thai recipes that he's tweaked with his own Asian style. With a new downtown, we hope you enjoy the new Duck & Dumpling.
