Ten years ago I spent the last moments I will ever have with my father at DS. We shared our last cigar and downed our last scotch together. Our last laugh...he died not long after. This was the last place I saw him without tubes, respirators, and doctors. Every year I go back in for a 21 year old Balvenie, a fine cigar and a toast to the old man...that is until yesterday. 2:30 PM on a Monday, and I was the ONLY customer there. The bartender new me right away, poured me my 21 yr old Balvenie, charged me for it and as I set to enjoy my scotch & toast the old man I hear...sorry, we have a dress code you will have to leave! (very nice T-shirt from my bar) not trashy looking at all. Charged me for the drink $30.00 then basically said I was not good enough to be in there. As I walked out I heard him say to the bartender...""see how that works, that's how you get rid of them? To all of you at DS...thanks for ripping at my heart...all I wanted to do was toast the old man...guess I?m just not good enough for your establishment anymore. What a lousy group of people you have become! more

The only place like it in town 3/30/2010

If you find yourself feeling as though you were born in the wrong decade, longing for the pompous speakeasy of Sinatra?s days where the clientele won?t actually make you lose hope in humanity and you can get lost in the sultry notes of a jazz singer from a smoky leather arm chair, then Downing Street is as close as your going to get. Sure, it?s not Harry?s or quite pre-killjoy NYC regulation bars, but hell, we live in Houston and this is our great bar. more

DS used to be a great place to hang out. Management changes every few months and consistently poor server staff make DS a disappointment. There cigars are properly humidified but outrageously overpriced. Pros: You can smoke cigars Cons: Everything else more

WONDERFUL ATMOSPHERE 5/26/2009

My husband and I went this past weekend for a nice casual drink after dinner (and for him to have a cigar). The waitress was very friendly. We will definitely be back. more

I love this place..... One of the very few place where you can still smoke. The food and drinks are both awesome, love the Ruben and Cheese and Meat platter. I love the atmosphere, blend of both young and middle aged professional people. If you love cigars you will love this place. All the staff is very friendly. You can just hang around and smoke a cigar or enjoy a drink. Comfy, cozy and upscale. Pros: Casual Relaxing Atmosphere to enjoy a cigar Cons: The drinks need to be less pricey more

OK..I usually don't write comments OR stuff like that ; but PLEASE DO NOT LISENT TO THE BAD REVIEWS ON THIS SITE!!! I 'm from L.A. and I went to visit my boyfriend in Houston last week and after a great dinner at PAPPAS BROS(EXCELLENT steakhouse BY THE WAY) we went to this bar for drinks...the bartender and the waiter acknowledge my boyfriend who is a regular and they welcome me in a very friendly way....SO ,PEOPLE STOP SAYING THAT THE STAFF IS RUDE..because they are the most helpful and professional staff i've ever seen.As the matter of fact, I want to mention that when my boyfriend went to the washroom he left me by myself and there was a group of ''gentlemen"" sitting across from us and they started to act obnoxious..needless to say.. we ask for the manager and he came right away and he move them to a different table so they could stop disturbing me!! Relaxed atmosphere, inside or outside is perfect for after work or a quiet happy hour, the patio is great as well as the inside lounge area which is also great for friendly business matters 12/23/2007

Love this place! The service is just right, not too imposing yet always there when needed. Never too crowded but can hold lots of good company. It's not a loud noisy club/bar but yet a fun and relaxed business man/ mature young adult scene. Go there for a drink during your lunch hour or a fine cigar after work. RUDE! 4/3/2007

RUDE! What does it matter if the place has quality cigars, a good selection of fine scotch and good beer AND, from time to time, good jazz if some obnoxious, ill-informed, half-baked manager is RUDE? Without any provocation whatsoever - RUDE! I have witnessed this on too many occasions: RUDE to me, RUDE to my friends, RUDE to others. It isn't cheap there. If you don't want to be treated RUDELY by some low-life, poor excuse for a manager, DON'T GO! There are plenty of other places in Houston to spend your money. Pros: Good selection of cigars, scotch and decent snacks. Cons: RUDE. Nothing is worth having your evening ruined by an obnoxiously rude idiot manager. more

A Great Experience! 1/27/2007

I visited Downing Street Pub last night for the first time. I heard about this place six months ago but was hesitant to go because of some of the negative reviews on this site. What a mistake I made in waiting. My experience there was fantastic! The manager and bartenders were very friendly and helpful. The people I met were outgoing and I had many great conversations. I found the place to be very clean and well kept and the smoke was not near the level I thought it might be (especially compared to some other bars I've visited). I really love scotch and other whiskies and my greatest joy was the extensive range available for all the whiskies. I highly recommend!! more

Bad experience with unclean tables and uninterested staff. Manager gave us the brush off. Spend your money elsewhere. Gone down hill over the last year. Cons: Bad service, bad staff attitude more

LADIES CHECK THIS PLACE OUT!!! 5/30/2006

I love Downing street. I am surprised at the negative reviews for a number of reasons. The first is the service, Dave is by far the best bartender in town hands down. He will always remember your name, drin, and never will he let someone sit without making conversation. Second is the crowd. If you love well established middle aged business professional then i am not sure why you would go anyplace else? Third is the smoke. Really are there any clubs that allow smoking that are not always full of smoke? I have taken people as groups and often go alone and never have i not met at least 10 people eager to chat the night away. TRY it again if you had a bad experience and if you have never been make it top on your list. more

Great Place 4/17/2006

Despite other claims, I've never had an issue with the service here. I like cigars and I love scotch. The staff definitely knows about the scotch. They've got one of the best selections in town. Like cognac? There's plenty of that, as well. You will come out smelling like a cigar, but you should already know that it's a cigar bar, and that comes with the territory...accept it or go elsewhere. Best bar in Houston! 1/2/2006

If you can't handle the smell of a fine cigar...don't come to DSL. I have NEVER been treated rudely. I guess some competitors will sink to any level to bad mouth the competition. This bar is run by the best in the business. If you got an attitude there then maybe you should go down the street with the other wannabes! more

I visited Downing Street last night for the first time since having a dreadful experience 2 years ago. What a change. Downing Street has got its great atmosphere back. The rude manager is gone and now the place is run properly. The loud music is gone and the bar and restrooms were spotless. It was such a delight to sit, have a cigar and great conversation with the manager, bar staff - including Dave - and the other customers. Thank you Downing Street for getting rid of that dreadful manager and restoring your pub to what it is best know for. Pros: great staff, great cigars. Cons: a bit far from where I live! more

during a recent visit to Houston we visited Downing Street. I had been there a few times before, and thought it was a fun place. I recently visited this establishment with some out of town guests. One of my guests, who's 40, and was the oldest in our group, was accosted to show id by a very obnoxious staff member. The staff were generally very rude. All in all it was not a very comfortable place to spend time; we left before we finished our drinks. This used to be a nice place but it has gone way down hill. I recently took my wife out to Downing Street for drinks and to enjoy a cigar. After ordering drinks I went into the humidor to peruse the selections. As I approached the cigarette section for a closer look the sales associate there started to bark and admonished me for getting to close - in the rudest way! It ruined the whole night. I told our waitress hoping she would talk to management but nothing was done. Thumbs WAY down for Downing Street - to many other choices in town to have deal with that attitude.
