New to Fly Fishing. ....decided I wanted to try my hand at Fly Fishing and went to Deep South Outfitters. Being a novice at the hobby, the staff at Deep South were patient and understanding. They made sure I had everything I needed to get started, from gear to lessons. If you want to learn from some of the best in the business, I suggest you give these folks a call. more

A great fly shop. I have been going to Deep South for a long time and have only good things to say about the place. We in Birmingham are really lucky to have it. You're not going to find another group of guys better at outfitting you with the right rod and reel, selecting some flies, and sending you off to a place where they will work. And, they know from personal experience because they spend most of their off time on the water. You're not going to get that from a giant outdoor store or an Internet site. Most of my fishing is in the South, but they've also set me up for trips trout fishing in Canada, bonefish in the Yucatan, and redfish on the coast. Besides that, they are just good people. I care about where my money goes and, especially when it comes to fishing, I don't want it going to a place that won't remember me after it's spent and has never been where I want to go. Such a cool place. more

What a great flyshop and outfitting store...I have been coming in and getting advice, gear, and flyrods and reels for years. The owner and staff are very helpful and knowledgeable about all types of fishing, salt and fresh water. I have never had a bad experience in this store. I do have to laugh at Clarence H's comment that he did not like the store because the store employee did not want him to demonstrate to his son how to ""flyfish"" inside the store with an expensive flyrod...really? If I were the store owner I wouldnt let you back in my shop for being that smart...Can I go in a gun store and demonstate hunting and shooting...and with an expensive gun??? Anyway..great shop and staff, I would not use anyone else. more

I have been fly fishing for a while now but needed to learn how to spey cast for an upcoming trip to Alaska. I went in for a casting lesson and was blown away by the level of expertise and teaching skill that was available just down the street for a very reasonable fee. My wife is a novice fly fisher and went in for a lesson (to avoid frustration for both of us), and after one lesson was able to catch her first trout in Yellowstone. more

Great Folks, Great Shop 3/26/2012

All of the guys at Deep South have been nothing but great and helpful in all aspects of my experiences. From help with fishing tips and gear, to even great conversation about life. They have a new website at www(dot)fishdso(dot)com, and I would highly recommend them to anyone needing fly fishing gear or even outdoors clothing. more

A Great Experience!! 2/19/2012

I am new to Alabama, and totally new to fly fishing. The people in this shop are absolutely a pleasure to be around. Ask for Bur. I cannot imagine that anyone alive knows more about fly fishing, or cares more about people than this man. My new fly rod, reel, fly line, and rod case cost me less than $200. It is refreshing that there still stores like this around, so that people who understand quality are not confined to the giant soulless retailers that are corporate America. more

Over priced and lacked knowledge of Southern fly fishing 8/25/2011

I went to this store on August 8, 2011 to buy a new fly reel, rod and line for my son. I have been fly fishing for 49 years. The sales person proceeded to tell me that the equipment that I was using was no good and that they don't make the reels, line or accessories anymore. All the rods and reels they have are very over priced as well as the accessories. The only reason I am writing this is to let everyone know especially the novice that this is not the place to go for fly fishing equipment. I went to Bass Pro Shop in Leeds and they had all the equipment I was looking for and their reels and rods are much better priced. By the way they do still make my equipment. more

Highly Recommended 7/3/2010

Well, my experience has been great, good info, good selection of fly fishing equip (especially trout) My wife and I took casying lessons from David, awesome instructor and well worth the cost, even though we had fly fished for a while he helped get rid of some bad habits we had picked up. Rob, the owner is great. Pleasant, outgoing and an experienced trout fisherman Pros: Incredible experience base, just nice guys Cons: Havent found any yet more

Outstanding Shop - Great People 6/4/2008

Despite the other negative review, the guys at the shop, and the owner included - especially - are ALWAYS helpful and friendly, and will go out of their way to help anyone with tackle, gear and location questions, without pushing unecessary goods. Certainly the most knowledgeable persons in the area with all of the necessary gear for fishing and other outdoor pursuits. I would highly recommend. The folks at the shop are also contributors to Eastern Fly Fishing Magazine and probably others. Pros: Service and Products Cons: Location more

Won't go here again. 9/6/2007

I took a replacement fly reel I had purchased from Cabela's to have the line taken off and put on a new spool. The man behinde the counter (presumably the owner) told me he would do it for a fee, which I expected--no problems. He was going to do it right away, but I had to get back to my office and asked for a receipt for leaving my reels (common practice at all tackle stores I have ever been in). He then handed me back my reels and told me he was not going to do it; I assume because he was offended I asked for a receipt. I will definitely never set foot in this shop again. more
