A Chicago treasure and a musical treat 7/27/2007

Davenport's is a unique, eclectic musical entertainment venue with honestly talented singing servers, diverse, high quality entertainment and a welcoming feel. Thankfully, in a time when DJs are the norm, Davenport's still provides live music 6 nights a week, and it's consistantly good. How wonderful that there is still a venue where Chicago's talented Cabaret performers can share their talents in a true 'listenning room.' Meanwhile, in the outer chamber, you can put your talent to the test most nights at the piano bar, but if you do only one thing this summer, go on Friday or Saturday night to The Nitz & Howe Experience. These guys are brilliant! Daryl and George are laugh out loud funny, clever, adorable 'comedians', but don't kid yourself; they are gifted, talented singers/musicians as well. Part of what makes it so hilarious and fun to be a part of is George's expert musicianship. He makes it look so easy; he can accompany anybody on anything because he has a million great songs in him. And listen to these voices for a second in between the hilarity; George has a tenor that's a gift from God, and Daryl has a deep mellow baritone of which he has just begun to plumb the depths. Throw a party at Davenport's, or just end your evening with a cocktail at this late night Chicago treasure. Daryl and George will make you feel like family! Pros: Easy street parking, great entertainment Cons: High drink prices more

Editorial
  • The Scene
Davenport's is part piano bar, part cabaret. Soft wood panels, delicate lighting and blue velvet curtains warm the atmosphere, but the space is also quite modern--no posing as Sinatra here. The clientele is a mix of young and old who appreciate good music, good drinks and good conversation.

    The Draw
In the piano bar--which hosts music nightly (except Tuesdays), including singing waitresses, for no cover--you can sit near the piano or in a cozy banquette; sightlines and sound are excellent everywhere. A door at the piano bar's back leads to the small cabaret, decorated in shades of gray, with seating for 50, which can be reserved in advance for shows by local and touring vocalists; prices vary by act and require a two-drink minimum.
