Houston's Premier Music Lab for Local Music 12/5/2009

Owner Bob Edwards has cajoled this heavenly Heights Hangout into a safe zone for Houston's musical talent of all ages and abilities. With both class acts from the road and local favorites filling the monthly calendar, Dan's has a loyal following who show up no matter who's on the bill. Thursday night jam's bring out the ham's in musician's of all level of expertise. Now with food service, the bountiful backyard is even more enticing as a "happy hour" hangout for the Hippie Impaired. I love the annual "South By Due East" three day festival with 100's of bands playing their own material. Super networking place for musicians of all ages. Pros: Super Place for Musicians to Hang more

Unclean and pricey 10/4/2008

The toilets at this place are filthy. Be prepared to hold your nose while you relieve yourself. They did at least have running water, which I discovered after removing two kitchen rolls from the sink. Kitchen rolls that were no long there later. Great if you like drying your wet hands on your clothes. The drinks are horrendously expensive for a dive bar. $4.75 for a bottle of St Arnold's? Domestics are marginally cheaper, if you like drinking urine to save a dollar. The whole place is in a state of disrepair. One could understand if they were undergoing renovation, but half the junk "stored" in the lounge area had a layer of dust suggesting it hadn't moved in a long time. But at least the torn out bar with taps indicated that they no longer have draught beers. One wonders where the money from the over-priced drinks goes. Pros: Good music, low lighting. Cons: Dirty, shambolic and pricey. more

always great 10/2/2008

if you're not familiar with the heights, you may think you're driving out to the middle of nowhere getting to this place. but once there, the effort proves well worth while because this is an authentic blues bar roadhouse. they don't serve hard liquor, but the domestic beers are very reasonable. the showes they organize show prove the owners have a lot of heart and love for the music. many of the people who go there are 'regulars' in the true sense of the word. it's not upscale, but it is authentic. the clientele may look a bit on the gruff side in a blue collar way, but they're workin' blue collar people who can relate to the pain of the blues. and, as steven stills once famously said while performing 'black queen' live as some audience members sarted to laugh out of nervousness, 'there's nothin' funny about the blues.' my only advice: at 9 the palce is usually empty. don't show up before 10 or 10:30. more

Best dose of live Texas blues and rock 10/15/2006

My husband and I wandered in here Friday night just to grab a beer and hear a local band. To our surprise Carolyn Wonderland showed up to rock the house before she burns up the Netherlands! We returned Saturday night to hear another awesome local indie rock trio STAMEN. Casual atmosphere, lovely backyard garden. Like going to a Houston Heights house party only the music is much better! Pros: Best Local Bands Cons: Beer and Wine Only - Set Ups Available! more

Good admosphere. 8/26/2006

I love this place. They are very similar to Fitzgerald's. I particularly love the outside back garden, it is very interesting. The only downside is that they have terrible parking, and they hardly ever let people under 21 in. Pros: Good atmosphere Cons: parking, staff are not always kind. more

diamond in the rough 4/15/2005

I can't say enough good things about this place. The bartenders were attentive, gracious and well deserving of the 50% tip I left them after only 4 beers. The two bands I had the opportunity to see were phenomenal. Opening was Psychedelic Jungle Tribe, a young funk rock band that needs only the right auduence to catapult them to the top of any record producers wish list and the closer was Guppies From Outer Space, a true rock and roll band fronted by a chick compared in reviews to SRV and Steve Vie. If this is what I can expect from Dan Electro's, rest assured, I will return with everyone I know. more

  • In Short
The bar's large courtyard, canopied entirely by trees, makes outdoor conversation pleasant even on Houston's sultry summer nights. Patrons can settle in among the guitars with $2 draft beers and enjoy an eclectic sampling of music, from blues to alternative country, rock to folk. Thursday night's blues jam has been going on for more than 10 years and shows no signs of letting up.
