Worth the trip to Federal Hill 11/9/2009

We had a great dinner last week. The food was very good (the Veal Chop special was "special"). The service was solid, the wine list had several moderately priced good wines. Overall our party was very happy! Thanks, we will come again! more

Excellent Food!! 8/13/2009

Mixed feelings... 2/22/2008

Our concierge recommended Cassarino's, and after looking it up and reading some pretty positive reviews, we had to give it a try. On the plus side, the atmosphere and service were fine. They seated us promptly (had a reservation), and the waitstaff was fairly attentive and courteous. Didn't see our waiter quite as often as I might have liked but there were enough servers running around that it didn't really matter. Now the food... we had the Calamari Cassarino, Apple Salad, Frutti di Mare and that evening's special (name escapes me, but it was chicken and vegetables over what I'll assume was tagliarelli in white sauce). The Calamari was quite good with the peppers, olives and capers. I thought well enough of the salad, too... a little on the sweet side with the citrus dressing and candied walnuts (I know... what did I expect?!) but not bad. When the entrees finally arrived, however, all I can say is they failed to impress. My pasta was a bit overdone, and the white sauce was oily-er than I've encountered elsewhere. My girlfriend's Frutti di Mare was... well... just a bit on the bland side. The shrimp and scallops were great by themselves, but the sauce didn't offer anything special or compliment the seafood in any way. For my part, I don't wish to leave such a well-revered restaurant thinking I could have had as good at home. In conclusion, I'd say go for the atmosphere and friendly service, but keep your expectations in check with regards to the food (or at least the dishes I mentioned!). more

Very good Italian food 10/7/2007

I came to Cassarino's with some colleagues of mine recently, and I was very very pleased with our dinner. We were seated at a nice table on the 2nd floor and had friendly, efficient service from a great waitress. Everything came with perfect timing. The menu had all the basics for a solid Italian restaurant, and the portions were huge. Everybody loved their entrees. I found the chicken & escarole soup to be extra fresh and flavorful. I loved the clear broth and torn chicken pieces. The flavors complemented each other perfectly and made for an ideal, uncomplicated soup. I had a special entree with pork tenderloin over pasta in a marsala cream sauce. Prosciutto and tomatoes were mixed in the sauce. The tomatoes tasted great, though the large chunks were a bit confusing, and I wished the pieces of pork were smaller...but I really cannot complain, the taste was out of this world. My colleagues had huge portions of eggplant parm and spaghetti. I'd definitely go back. Pros: Great, solid Italian dishes. Well-priced. Friendly service more

King of the Hill 9/3/2007

My family and I had the pleasure of dinning at Cassarino's this past Saturday. I must say that it was fabulous. We were greated at the door in a timely and polite fashion. The server was there whenever we needed something. The food was just tremendous, the veal chops and the swordfish special were awsome, cant wait to come back to see what else they have up their sleeve. Pros: quality food good prices lively atmosphere Cons: take advantage of the valet tough more

Best Value on The Hill! 4/6/2007

Cassarino's restaurant is a great place to eat at when visiting federal hill. With its wide spread of clientele the restaurant is open to anyone who is in the mood for great italian-american food. I highly reccomend this reataurant not matter what the occasion may be. Lunch with the family or dinner with a date cassarinos is a great pick. more

most comfortable dining experience, excellent food, I bring everyone here to experience all that is fedral hill! 2/8/2007

I can't say enough good things about this restaurant, I've been to a lot of the places on fedral hill but this is by far my favorite. huge meal portions, great price, friendly atmosphere, not too loud, and i'ts compfortable, if your into super snobby fancy then this isn't really your place. it would work for anything to, just a normal dinner or bring the whole family, or even a romantic night out. and the food is incredible, i ussually end up taking most of my meal home becuase i just can't finish it and it makes 2 more meals after that. i'd say best place on fedral hill! Pros: your stomach will leave very satisfied Cons: can get busy on fri, sat nights especially during waterfire. more

Fantastic time 10/8/2006

We attended Cassarino's Saturday night (10/7) and just had a fantastic time. I could not believe that I have never heard of this restaurant, they have three floors of dinning and every chair was fill, even outside and at the bar. I must say that as busy as they were the service was attentive and the food just delicious, and plenty to take home and enjoy with the football game.. Very good guys!!! Pros: affordabel, quality and quantity more

Romantic, I do not think so! 9/24/2006

I find it completely odd that this restaurant is listed under the romantic catagory especially compared to other restaurants on the hill. If your idea of average service, below average food, close tables, loud, especially on the first floor in the summer when the doors are all open to street level with all the traffic and motorcycles on Atwells Avenue flying by then I guess I am missing something. The only redeeming factor is this restaurant is reasonably priced for the hill. But in the same sense I believe you are getting what you pay for, the food is no better than any Italian chain restaurant like an Olive Garden. I feel Siena, Pane E Vino, and Zooma just to name a few all are far above Cassarino's in every catagory. Pros: Inexpensive Cons: Food, noise, table spacing more

Tremendous Dinning experience 9/5/2006

We were in town for waterfire this past saturday, we were bumed that they were cancelled, but cassarinos turned our night around, we were greated promptly by the host who led us to our table on the 2nd floor. we were sereved some tasty san gria and vodka lemonades, we ate soup to nuts with food bill so reasonable i thought they forgot to put stuff on. GREAT JOB, DELICIOUS Pros: food, food, drinks more

Avoid making resvervations. 6/9/2006

I called Cassarino's to make a reservation for 10 adults and three kids under 12 for 6\17\06 at 6 pm. I was turnned away and told I would have to be in and out by 5:30. I thought that was ignorrant on a resturants behalf and I am appualed that a family resturant like Cassarino's turrned down a large party like that. Oh well, Fire and Ice in the Providence Place Mall was more than happy tyo accomadate us w/out any ?'s. It seems to me like Cassarino's caters to the neighborhood more than tourists. Their loss on the tab with a family that large $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!!!!!!!!!!!! Cons: WILL NOT MAKE RESVERSATIONS FOR PARTIES OVER 10 TH more

We attended Cassarino's over the weeken for our childs graduatipn, and I must say we had the most fabuolous time. The quality of the food and the prices were tremendous. Its nice to see there our still resturants out there where you can have a great meal with your family and it wont break the bank. It was as if we were eating amonst family Pros: price, food, atmosphere more

Awesome Place!! 4/6/2004

This is by far my favorite restaurant in Providence...and there are a lot of them to chose from! The food is always great, the atmosphere in the lower level lounge area is great and the serivce is amazing! The only problem you will run into is that it is virtually IMPOSSIBLE to get anyone to answer the phone to make a reservation! I've had that experience every time I've called for the past 4 years...it usually takes about 10 calls and 2 or 3 days to get through to someone. more

good food, good price 2/23/2004

I have eaten here 3 times now, each time the food was good. I wouldn't say it was exceptional, but it was definitely better than I've eaten elsewhere. I have no other Federal Hill experiences to compare to. The prices are extremely low, what you should expect at any Italian restaurant, especially for the quality of the food. The service is lacking. My waiters and waitresses were less than enthusiastic. The bread did not arrive until shortly before or at the same time as the meal, and it took forever for the waiter to bring us the bill. If you're looking for good Italian food at a great price this is your place. I don't imagine the service is usually this bad as I have gone at generally "inconvenient" times (4pm and 10pm) when there are fewer waitstaff working and when they aren't expecting a ton of customers. Pros: very inexpensive, quality food more

I tried just about every place on the Hill and pretty much in Providence, and I have to say I always come back to Cassarino's. For the quality, of their food and staff and the low prices I don't think there is a better restaurant in Providence. If you have not gone you have to try it, it's great! Pros: Valet, Great service, Inexpensive Cons: none more

Good but loud and busy 11/24/2003

Very good food and okay service, but so crowded and noisy I couldnt enjoy the meal. Loved the food but atmosphere is not to take a date to. Placed at a table almost in the middle of the restaurant. Waitstaff is spread alittle too thin. Not a romantic place to go! Pros: Good food, Not a long wait Cons: Noisy, Not romantic more

Ordinary 10/25/2003

The fried calamari with peppercorn dressing and snail salad were good. I had a veal dish and my wife had chicken. The veal was smothered in a red sauce that tasted like it came out of a jar. The pasta side was al dente. The chicken was pedestrian and the potato side arrived late and cold. We were not asked if we preferred smoking or no an they sat us in the lounge where the smoke and an obnoxious drunk provided atmosphere. To clear the air they left the door open and my feet were numb by the time the check arrived. Service was slow and inattentive and the tables were so close together the waiter had trouble getting around. I couldn't wait to get out into the fresh air. Pros: None Cons: ordiany food, poor service more

Outstanding!!!!! 6/23/2003

I recently dined at Cassarino's this past week and was truly surprised. The food was tremendous. I am very picky when dining out, and for me to leave a resturant without a complaint gets my vote as one the best.. We had a tremendous dinner from the apps, to the salad course as well as dinner and desserts. This is a must try if you have not yet. more

  • The Scene
Planning a blind date, business meeting or multigenerational birthday celebration? Somehow, the informal elegance of Cassarino's dimly lit dining room appeals to all. Maybe it is the timeless, dark-green and cream interior with brass accents, but more likely, it's the fact that the casually dressed crowd enjoys the food. Fortunately for patrons, Cassarino's menu of Italian favorites does not require a translator.

    The Food
Whatever you choose, from pasta to the wine-based pollo Marsala, you can feel confident that everything will be dependably delicious. Not to say there isn't any creativity in these traditional offerings: The scallops alla aurore are tossed with penne in a pink vodka sauce and the ravioli pesto arrives fanned out on the plate like a pinwheel, with sun-dried tomatoes and black olives at the center.
