Best gyro in the neighborhood 3/30/2010

After years of stopping in to inquire about some falafel after an evening?s drink-up at Rud?s with my motorcycle group only to be told that they had stopped serving food, I finally made it! Now, I?m Spanish, which means that dinner before 6pm is unheard of, but I as this is perfectly normal for everyone else I won?t complain about it. An intense craving for gyros had harassed my tummy since I?d gone to bed the night before, so last Monday I headed over to Al?s at the unlikely hour of 11am. It was strange not to stop in at Rud?s for a pint but I reminded myself that once you go ?before noon? there is no going back. Pre-lunch crowd Al?s was fairly empty save for a friendly clerk and a woman at the counter who proceeded to make our order fresh just for us! Fried to order kibbeh, oh yes, thank you, I?ll have this every day. We ordered a falafel sandwich, a lamb gyro and an order of kibbeh. Grand total? $8. Damn it, why had we not come here before?! Even better, this deliciousness is apparently all discounted by $1 each on Sundays and Tuesdays. For those that wish to dine in, Al?s does offer seating and a great selection of microbrews. The ambiance being what it is, a convenience store, we took ours home. I live just up the street and our food was still steamy hot when we unwrapped it from the foil. While the falafel was good, it paled in comparison to the tender and flavorful gyro. As a result, we fought over the gyro but since my boyfriend accused me of being ?greedy with food? the insecurities of the fatty-ness that it implied compelled me to give him more of the gyro than I really wanted to. Needless to say, I am dying to go back and next time it will be on a Sunday or Tuesday. Pros: cheap, delicious Cons: beets in the falafel sandwhich? more
