My husband and I lived in South Africa for two years. We were excited when we read about 10 Degrees South restaurant. We decided to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary there...

Found metal in entree 8/29/2011

The food was different and very tasty. Unfortunately, I found metal pieces in my entree. I thought at first it was a bone (no big deal), but was shocked when I pulled a sharp, metal piece out of my mouth. I informed the waiter. I received an apology and that was it. I was expecting a more formal apology from a manager but received nothing. Because of this experience alone, I will not return. more

10 Degrees South 5/22/2010

The food n this restaurant was awefully made and presented!! I asked to have food brought to me that contained no garlic and it was loaded with it with spices and poorly incorporated food and rediculous side dishes! Also poor quality food for the price! the waiter lacked knowledge of what was in each item on the menu. I specifically said no garlic....I ended up sick that night...had to take medication and lost my sleep! Cons: food was aweful! more

Fancy South-African food in a big, airy space in Buckhead. 4/26/2010

This place is good... but outstanding? I'm not sure. It's a big and beautiful space, and the presentation and service is elegant. And perhaps it's because I haven't truly been introduced to the cuisine, but I just don't get it. And I especially don't get it when apps are $10 and entrees are $20+. That makes for an expensive learning curve. Everything we had was pretty solid, but nothing really stood out. Well, there was one thing. The chicken spring rolls tasted like something that came from my freezer... but whatever the red sauce that came with it was, was AWESOME. It was zesty, and slightly spicy and looked like Zaxby's sauce. But tasted WAY better. I ended up dunking basically everything on our table in there. Again, perhaps I just don't know the cuisine... but I really don't see much of a reason to go back, unless I'm in the area. more

First visit Last visit 7/16/2009

My husband and I lived in South Africa for two years. We were excited when we read about 10 Degrees South restaurant. We decided to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary there. \r \r My husband ordered the Kingklip and loved it--just like when he ordered it in South Africa. I ordered the prawns and was very disappointed. The service was terrible and the restaurant was not even busy. Our waitress would disappear for long periods of time. One waiter did not seem to have anything to do but wander around the restaurant.\r \r We had planned to take our children, their spouses, and grandchildren to the restaurant because they had visited us in South Africa. We are not going to waste our money or time to go back. Pros: Unique food Cons: Terrible service more

RUN AWAY 2/13/2009

Run in the opposite direction as fast as you possibly can. Do not even pull into the parking lot. Please promise yourself you won't even look at this restaraunt twice once you realize where it is. If I could give less than 1 star for this I would. First, the lady who seated us in the place had both her eyebrows covered with pieces of paper so that was insanely weird. Second, they only seat you in one section of the place and leave the lights off in all the other sections. There is literally one row of lights on in this huge empty room. Thirdly, the food was awful in every sense of the word. We were only there about 10 minutes, had half of one plate of this mess they called food, then paid them to leave. Pros: NOTHING Cons: EVERYTHING more

Excellent Food, Drinks, Music and Staff 2/4/2009

I recently went to Ten Degrees South for dinner and was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, the staff - very hospitable- and the food was delicious. I ordered some appetizers at the bar while waiting for our table and was more than pleased with the martinis and recommendations made by the bartender, Rebecca. We ordered Bobotie, Lamb Chops and the Prawns for dinner and loved them all! The music coming from the lounge/bar area was fantastic and we had such a wonderful evening! Thank you Ten Degrees for getting it right! Pros: Warm, friendly, knowledgeable staff, excellent food, best ambiance! Cons: Can't think of any. more

Fun Bar Scene 12/17/2008

This is one of my favorite places in the city to grab a dinner at the bar or have a sit down meal with friends. Bar staff is very attentive and always welcoming. Plus, they have really great live acoustic music on the weekends and weekdays. \r \r Definitely try the Boervors (sp?!) sandwich from the appetizer menu. Pros: Great food, drinks and staff Cons: Only Valet Parking more

Good Food, Bad Customer Service 11/22/2008

Visited 10 Degrees South with 4 friends for the 4th time. A group of about 12 loud, obnoxious people were seated next to us, who felt it necessary to yell at each other the entire meal. Needless to say our meal was ruined as we could not even hear our own conversations. When we complained we were told they were sorry, but it was a busy night and there was nothing they could do. When I asked to speak to the manager before leaving, he came to the table and spoke to someone else in our party, and left before I had a chance to speak to him. He promised us a free round of drinks at Jack and Diane's (one of his other establishments). He met us there, and was rude telling my friend that if I had a problem I should have said something. He apparently didn't care that we spent over $300 at his restaurant, and was in no mood to soothe my nerves. Needless to say, thanks to his lack of concern, I will not be back to either of his restaurants. Pros: Unique Food Cons: Very loud, Owner doesn't seem to care about his patrons more

good service, good food 10/25/2008

my husband and i celebrated our anniversary here last night and had a great time. our waitress, constance,\r was very nice. she sent over champaigne when she heard it was our anniversary. the bobotie appetizer was excellent. my husband ordered the lamp chops and i ordered the ostrich medalions. i have to say i liked his better. our dessert, di's delight, was fantastic. overall, the food and service were really good. i look forward to going back. more

Unique food, poor service 8/26/2008

After hearing such great things about Ten Degrees South, I decided to try it out one Friday night not too long ago. First off, the waiter was the strangest and possibly the most socially akward person I had ever come into contact with. He never asked us if we wanted anything other than water to drink, and would stand over our table without speaking for minutes until we finished our conversation. We also had to ask him what the specails were since he was not going to divulge them without prompting. The food was excellent and the ostrich medallions are highly recommended. After speaking to the manager about the waiter situation, he said that the he had very little experience in waiting tables, and that might have been why he was acting the way he did. If you are going to put your restaurant in a higher class, you should hire a wait staff with experience and a personality.. Pros: Unique and interesting food, Cons: Strange, akward waitor,. Bring cash for valet. more

I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! 3/22/2008

I first found out about this place from a friend of mine. At first, I didn't want to go, but I went anyway. I am SO glad that I did, because this is my #1 restaurant in the ENTIRE Atlanta area! Their food is to die for! The escargot? FABULOUS! The bobotie? EXCELLENT! But the real kicker...the DI'S DELIGHT? UNBELIEVABLE!!! The people are always courteous, they have complimentary valet, and the decor is slammin'! Even to-go orders are painless! You CAN'T go wrong with this place! It's not too expensive...but...it ain't cheap either! But it is SO worth it! You gotta try this place! Pros: Everything Cons: NOTHING more

Top Ten 2/28/2008

What a great surprise this restaurant was. Six of us dined there last Friday evening and it was outstanding. We ordered everything family style and shared dishes. The calamari was the best I have eaten in Atlanta. The Lamb Chops were phenomenal as was the Chicken Curry. The service was attentive and great wine recommendations were made. We had a South African Chard and a Napa Cab which were paired brilliantly with the food. After dinner we went to the bar for a drink and the live music capped the night off tremendously. There was a great bar scene and we landed up staying until the place closed. This restaurant is without a doubt one of the top ten restaurants in Atlanta and I can not wait to go back. Pros: Ambience, Food. Service, Live Music more

South of what it is hyped up to be... 1/27/2008

I was with a business dinner party of 4. The lighting was rather dark in the restaurant, thus hiding many of the imperfections on the food. The wine selection, not listed on their website, was rather limited despite the restaurant saying that they have a large selection. One of my colleges, a former wine writer, could not find a decent white to pair with any of the apps. \r \r Our appetizers were quite impressive, but rather lacking in quantity, but I expected this from this style of restaurant. After asking two members of the wait staff for new knives, as ours were removed with the appetizers, we were finally able to consume our entrees. I ordered the Ostrich Medallions and was rather excited being my first time trying the bird. I was a bit disappointed that the presentation of the meal was worse that what an Applebee's or TGI Fridays would do. It was overly seasoned with rosemary, thus I could not taste the bird at all, just rosemary. Additionally, my sides of sauteed Zucchini was scattered about with the sauce running every where and my Mashed potatoes (which was odd coming from a South African restaurant) was nothing more than a ""dollop"" on the plate. \r \r We ordered a red do go with dinner and the first bottle was corked, not to mention that in questioning the wait staff about their wine selection, we had little success in getting a straight answer about wine pairing.\r \r \r After seeing a bill for 4 people (4 apps, 4 entrees, two glasses of white, 1 bottle of red, two desserts, and 3 after dinner drinks) at 300ish, I was a bit shocked. I expect to pay a price at nice places and do not have a problem with it, but if I am to pay this, I expect the experience to be worth it. Would I go back, no. Would I recommend it, no. more

TERRIBLE SERVICE 4/23/2007

This was my first time having dinner at this restaurant and I was very excited b/c I had heard great reviews. Unfortunately I did not have the same experience. We had a party of 8 and spent A LOT of money for some of the worst service I've had. Salads came, about 15-20 minutes after we ordered them....then it was another 45 minutes before we got our entres. We were told several times during that 45 minutes that our entres were ""on their way"". Once the entres came, we asked for bread which never came. 2 people at our table had to send their drinks back twice b/c it was not what they ordered. So bad that the BAR manager had to come over to the table. Generally at nice restaurant (one with these prices anyway) they would at least comp your dessert or a round of drinks....not here! The bill was still over $500 and not one thing was taken care of by management to compensate for their mistakes They had at least a chance to win me back and it didn't happen....we will not be dining there again. Pros: Decent Food Cons: Terrible Serice more

Best service by the Anthony's and staff. Best escargot and ostrich and lamb lollipops. Best SA wine liquor and beer. BAR NONE1 4/21/2007

Incredible food, service, wine, food, ambience, staff and patrons. Everyone I have taken there, 20 plus people, have enjoyed it and have returned with their friends. Plus they have a great soccer team and alot of SA people that live in the area frequent the bar for SA sport events on the tele and they add to the ambience of the seperate bar. In addition they have a seperate elaborately desined dining area which is very private and romantic. It could be in Miami where I used to live its that mod. Hats off to the decorator. Also, kudos to the oaks of SA for everything. They go above and beyond and have proven it to me every time. To all of their detractors lighten up and enjoy a new culture and experience. \r \r Previously A Weekly Diner,\r \r Todd Frankum\r Previous ATL native and now a Los Angeles resident. Wishing that I there was a 10 degrees South out here.\r \r toddfrankum@maccom more

Best Atmosphere ,Great Food 2/21/2007

I attended a 30th bithday bash last Saturday, i had an awesome experience. If you like fish i highly recomend the kingclip, if not, the Sosaties are delicious. As a person that has been in the hospitality industry for over 8 years and has owed his own nightclub/ lounge the service was superb.Trust me you wont have any regrets. more

Do Not Go To This Restaurant 3/22/2006

I went to your restaurant last Friday. I was very disgusted with the service. My boyfriend and I sat waiting for a waiter for 15 minutes. Many waiters kept passing us and never came over and said anything. The other waiters were just standing at the front desk. I tried to stop a wait or and he completely ignored me. I finally asked a waitress to send someone to my table. She stated that someone would be right over. After another 10 minutes no one ever came. I then just decided to leave. Cons: Horrible Service more

Disappointing 1/31/2006

My boyfriend and I went here for New Year's Eve, and we were very disappointed. The atmosphere was nice and comfortable, but other than that we didn't have a very good experience. There was a fixed-price menu which was very expensive for the quality of food and service. Our waitress was awful, right from the beginning. She brought us the wrong menu, we had to ask for water and bread, and she brought our entrees out before our salads. When we were ready for our entrees, they were the same ones just kept warm. None of the food was very impressive. Everyone else seems to really like this place, so maybe we just had a bad experience. I think it was mostly the service that ruined it. But there are enough wonderful restaurants in Atlanta that I will definitely not be back to this one or recommending it to anyone. more

A Gem in Atlanta 1/19/2006

This is one great place serving fine South African food. The retaurant is an unassuming building that looks like an office space outside but once you walk in, the thrill of luxuriois comfort will greet you complete with subdued lighting and awesome pianist next to a fireplace.Be sure you tip Mary Ryan very well. She is an excellent public relation to the establishment. Pros: Atmosphere, Food, Service Cons: South African Wine, View at one side, No mimosa more

Excellent food, great experience 1/11/2006

The food was excellent, as a party we had the curry, the ostrich, and the sosaties. Everyone was very satisfied with their meal. If you are a fan of steak, then the sosaties are an excellent choice. The food was delicious, the appetizers were good and very reasonably priced. Great atmosphere, I definitely recommend going if you want to go somewhere a little different. more
