I've been to Zake's probably a handful of times in the last three months and each time kept getting worse. I try not to judge based off of one experience so I gave Zake's a few choices...maybe one too many. The quality of their fish was literally STINKY. I ordered some sashimi and the quality was just awful - not fresh at all. The Nabeyaki Udon tasted like it was made entirely out of soy sauce and just water. And their Kobe Burger isn't Japanese Kobe, it's American, which is NOT the same thing. You might as well say it was just Angus and that doesn't come close to Kobe. No dessert offerings. Drinks are actually better than their food. This place used to be Royal Japan until they remodeled it into something..."trendy". Same Chinese owner. Service is ok...unattentive at times. On the weekends they appear as though they can't handle high volumes of tables. Hostesses seem a bit airheaded.
And what is the deal now? Anywhere you go all the sushi chefs behind the counter aren't Japanese. Some of them aren't even Asian. Traditional sushi chefs takes many years of training, not your two months and then you're in the door. Americans. What do they know.
Come here only if you know nothing about sushi or Japanese cuisine (and don't care to learn any better), and if you just want something trendy.
Try the sushi place down the street that just opened up across from Flemmings. Sushi grade is definitely way better.
Pros: Drinks, next to Bookstop
Cons: bad food, bad everything
