Best

I love little mom and pop restaurants, and this little gem is in that category of the few still out there in the city. Pros: Great food and service Cons: ---

Worst

Adequate cuisine, but do not consider patronizing it during peak dining hours. The plastic potted plant in the corner will grow fruit before you are seated.

Pleasant Place But Certainly Not To Die For 5/12/2005

I'm writing to bring some balance to the rave reviews here. I have had several meals at this restaurant and the food is just what you would expect from a neighborhood Italian, mom-and-pop restaurant. It is very pleasant and homey and old school Italian American (not Italian Italian), and I really like the fact that it's still around. The pastas were hearty and a notch above restaurants of its level, but this is not a place I would think of to take out-of-towners or dates. This place is a safe bet with older members of my family who don't like Zagatsy restaurants or don't like fancy gourmet meals. Pros: Nice staff, Decent food, Small Cons: Modest, Unglitzy, Unfancy more

Wonderful Experience! 5/8/2005

I came to Villa Romana Ristorante for a business function with my company and was completely overwhelmed by the incredible menu and service they offer. The exquisite dishes were so carefully and masterfully prepared that even my coworker who was a chef at one point in Northern Italy, was shocked. His overall expectation was minimal from such a small neighborhood restaurant! However, he, I and the rest of our party were very satisfied and impressed by the end of the evening! The service was equally superb. The waiters were Italian and trained from the ""Scuola Alberghiera"" in Northern Italy, I hope this is the correct spelling. In any event, they were masters and it showed by their attentiveness and knowledge about the food and wine they offered to the very busy restaurant! The owner, Tony was a very gracious host attending to everyones needs and aiding his servers wonderfully! Pros: Food, Service, Tony Cons: Parking, Parking, Parking more

Very good pasta, but just American pizza 4/17/2005

Two friends and I decided on a whim to try Villa Romana for dinner one busy Saturday. Seeing the 50th anniversary banner on the restaurant's facade, we reasoned that it must be good to have stuck around this long in the high-turnover restaurant business of San Francisco. The three of us have traveled a good deal, and we all enjoy good quality food. The host and waitstaff were very friendly and welcoming. We ordered two pasta dishes and one house pizza. The pasta dishes were excellent; we sopped up the delicious sauces with tasty sourdough bread. The pizza, however, as most American pizza, had lots of toppings on thick, soggy crust. It's fine, if you like that sort of thing, but authentic Italian pizzas are a much lighter with their fresh ingredients on thin, crisp crust. Overall, I recommend Villa Romana for its warm atmosphere, friendly waitstaff, and delicious pasta. Pros: good pasta and bread, cozy interior, friendly staff more

Da Best! Especially for delivery 4/10/2005

Let's face it. Sometimes you're too lazy to go to a restaurant. Villa Romana will deliver more than just pizza. My wife and I frequently order delivery and we actually split a veal parmagiana and salad and we don't go hungry EVER. The food comes quickly usually before they say it will be there and it's hot off the stove. You would think it would taste kind of greasy being delivered, but it is wonderful. When you eat in bring an appetite or be prepared to take it home with you. You get a LOT of food for the price and I have never been disappointed. Room in back for large groups. Pros: Great Food, Good Prices, Nice Atmosphere Cons: Parking is a pain more

Simply the Best! Magnifico! 3/3/2005

I just took some out-of-town relatives to Villa Romana for the first time. After tonight, they may come back to California just to eat here! I have been eating at Villa Romana since I first discovered it in 1980. This year, they celebrate their 50th anniversary of high quality, high class Italian dining! I have eaten at more than a few other Italian restaurants in the City and elsewhere, and this is the best I have had. They have never disappointed me, whether with their awsome pizza or a magnificent Italian feast like we had tonight. Although the grape covered ceiling and tableside jukeboxes are gone (I miss them), this restaurant continues to turn out excellent Italian dishes that are true treats for the palate. If you haven't tried this gem, you owe it to yourself! The service is excellent, prices reasonable, and the owner Tony is a class-act. Pros: Reasonable prices, Excellent service, Amazing food Cons: Parking more

5 Stars in The Sunset Disrict? 2/14/2005

Villa Romana is as close to a 5 star restaurant that I've ever been to in the inner sunset district...the service was superb, the food was impeccable, and the ambience was very Italian. The pizza was prepared by a real Italian who must be the owner because he sent over a complimentary ""pizza bianca"", which I had never tried before...it was delicious. The walls were covered with really old frescos which looked very new, I guess they just refurbished them. The waiters were Italian and were so cute and helpful. Great place. Pros: Food, Ambience, Service Cons: Parking more

Great Italian Food 12/10/2004

Villa Romana has excellent Italian food. Everytime we have gone there the service is great and they always go out of their way to make sure we enjoy our meal. The one negative is that it is a small restaurant and it can fill up quickly. When it's busy you may have to wait for a table. Other than that, this place is one of the best. Pros: Great Food, Great Service more

What a Cute Restaurant! 8/14/2004

Villa Romana is such a cute little Italian Restaurant. My boyfriend took me there and ever since then I have been thinking about what a great experience it was. The waiters are so cute and friendly. The two head waiters are Italian, and are very professional and know there stuff. The food was authentic. I traveled to Italy last year and know what real Italian food should taste like, and Villa Romana is cutting edge Italian for sure! The reviews are all great on here except for this one I just read. It gets me upset to read it because it is very obvious that they were very cheap and thought that they were eating at Mcdonalds. I have news for them, good food, service, and atmosphere which they definetely have at Villa Romana is not the same as a big mac and fries! Great Job Villa Romana! Tara Pros: atmosphere, food, service more

Che Bella!! 7/9/2004

This restaurant is seriously underrated! I mean it's jam-packed every night, has great authentic Italian Food, a great ""Italian"" Staff, wonderful atmosphere and service, But, hasn't been discovered by those elusive food critics. And, what's More, it has been there in the same location for 50 Years! What's cool is that they are planning a big 50th Year Celebration which is sure to open the eyes of those same critics! Go check it out, it's just great! Pros: Authentic, Great Food, Great Service/Ambienc more

Excellent! 3/4/2003

This restaurant never ceases to surprise me. It is always getting better somehow. I mean really, how do they do it? The food is so delicious and fresh, it's amazing. I like the Italian Chefs and Waiters, they are very charming and certainly add to the Italian Feel of the restaurant. I am in lack of words here, all i can say is Excellent! Pros: Food, Entertainment, Bar more

Ciao Bella! 12/11/2002

Villa Romana is fabulous. The service was great. The food was delightful. The atmosphere was very busy, but fun. And, the employees were virtually all Italian. Great! From the waiters, to the head chef, to the Maitre D' , Tony, the place was so entertaining. I felt like I've been coming there for years, and it was only my first vist. Great Restaurant! Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Italian Help more

Mamma Mia! 11/22/2002

This place is awesome! I can't believe how great the food is. We had the Crab-Cioppino, and it was amazing! It was enough for two, and only $21.95... The retsuarnt itself looks like it's a place where Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin would go hang out, back in the day. Great service too! The owner is Southern Italian, and very proud of his restaurant, and it shows in his service, food, and pricing! Great guy, very funny and extremely attentive and enthusiastic! Good Job Villa Romana, your a 10! Pros: Great Food, Nice Full Bar, Escellent Service Cons: None I Can See, None I Can See, None I Can See more

Bellissimo! 11/14/2002

This restaurant is by far the best Italian Restaurant I've seen on the west coast. I travel a lot all over the United States, and haven't seen a restaurant like this outside of New York. Excellent food and service. Tremendous ambience, very traditional trattoria like appearance. I like the Roman Theme, hence Villa Romana. The owner is a gentlemen. He offered my guests and I a bottle of complimentary Asti because we were celebrating my friend's birthday. He's a very genuine individual, and loves his restaurant with a passion. You can see this in his eyes and the way he treats his clients. Great guy, great restaurant. Pros: Tony, Great Food, Great Service Cons: None, None, None more

SF's Last Old School Ristorante 11/11/2002

In SF we are struggling to keep institutions like Villa Romana from becoming extinct. Luckily, it appears that Villa Romana is not going anywhere anytime soon. It's always very busy and bustling with activity. They just added delivery service and I recommend it because they deliver everything on their menu. The phone people that take your delivery order are top notch, and are always eager to recommend one of their fabulous specials. I think it's great to have such a fine italian Restaurant deliver food to your home. Fantsatic idea! Pros: Great Home Delivery, Take -Out Available, Banquets more

Villa Romana is Original! 11/11/2002

This place has always been a fun neighborhood restaurant. The owner, Tony, is a great host! Always gracious enough to get me a table when I stop in last minute without a reservation. The food is incredible traditional Italian, and great because he goes to italy every year and brings back new recipes. The Villa is beautiful! When you walk in for the first time, you will feel like you are in Italy!!! Pros: Service, Banquets, Delivery Cons: Parking, Crowded more

Fantastic! 11/8/2002

Four of us went there for dinner recently (our first time) and were blown away by the entire experience. The food was excellent and the service was phenomenal. Tony personally greeted us and our appetizer - a cheese and olive pizza - was on him. It's a family restaurant that really makes you feel like part of the family. We can't wait to go back! more

The BEST Italian Restaurant 10/15/2002

Villa Romana has always been worth the hour drive into San Francisco. WE absolutely love this place as the pasta and other meat entrees are always fresh, hot and just simply marvelous! Their portions are always plentiful - I've always had more then enough to take home. Looking for great, home style Italian dishes, you WILL find it at Villa Romana. You will not be disappointed! And the owner is a great guy..always makes his clients feel welcomed. Pros: Food, Ambience more
