Two friends and I decided on a whim to try Villa Romana for dinner one busy Saturday. Seeing the 50th anniversary banner on the restaurant's facade, we reasoned that it must be good to have stuck around this long in the high-turnover restaurant business of San Francisco. The three of us have traveled a good deal, and we all enjoy good quality food. The host and waitstaff were very friendly and welcoming. We ordered two pasta dishes and one house pizza. The pasta dishes were excellent; we sopped up the delicious sauces with tasty sourdough bread. The pizza, however, as most American pizza, had lots of toppings on thick, soggy crust. It's fine, if you like that sort of thing, but authentic Italian pizzas are a much lighter with their fresh ingredients on thin, crisp crust. Overall, I recommend Villa Romana for its warm atmosphere, friendly waitstaff, and delicious pasta.
