Van Michael Salon

Awesome salon, always a great experience! The highly trained professionals in cutting and coloring hair do excellent work. The atmosphere is great and they are truly focused on the customer. I always receive a head massage or hand massage while I'm there, and it's a good break from the busy Atlanta environment. Some of the shampoo chairs even recline and massage your back. There are plenty of staff members around to get you anything you need, and they all seem to take great pride in their work. I'd recommend this salon to anyone. Basically this salon is like the McDonalds of all salons. The quality of customer service is absolutely terrible.\r They are relying on the good name created in the salons former years and not too concerned with actually delivering a quality experience. The salon in Buckhead is so loud, noisy, and uncomfortable. They try and crank as many customers through the place that I often have to wait 20 or so minutes for stylists that seem to be habitually behind schedule. Not only do you have to wait forever, but you are also seated eye level to the rear ends of countless people walking by. Well, I'm going to start by saying that by no means do I exaggerate or stretch the truth. I honestly can say that I've had horrible experiences at Van Michaels. YES- experienceS. I went there once a long time ago (before they even renovated the whole salon) and I wanted full highlights. I told the colorist that I DID NOT want a color that would appear black or would only show up in sunlight. I have dark hair and I told him that many colors don't show up on my hair and to make sure that the color I pick will give me the desired light brown color I wanted. Guess what? My hair looked BLACK- literally not just black JET BLACK. So, they let me get it redone, but hey damage already done and customer already dissatisfied. When I got it redone, the lady was able to get the lightness that I wanted. I just didn't want to go back again, because I was afraid the same thing would happen again. \r \r Couple years later (April 08) I decided to try it once again thinking maybe it was just that ONE stylist that was horrible. I went wanting the same type of lightness I already had but just a different tone to it. First of all, the lady was rude and sarcastic the whole time which completely turned me off. Second of all, she was so inflexible about doing anything and I KNOW my requests were not ridiculous requests. She was just being lazy and kept bringing up time and her next appointment. Well... if you know that I want full highlights then the appropriate time block should've been picked when the full highlights appointment was MADE... that's not my problem. I'm paying you so much money so I can get the JOB I want. Not a half done job. Anyways, so that made me really mad. Then, when I'm making so many sacrifices so you get done in time for your next appointment and since you claim you can only do ONE thing with my hair then atleast do it right! My hair was orange. I am NOT kidding you. The stylists next to us gave us weird looks when they saw the job she did. DO NOT GO. Pros: Nice ambience since they renovated, nice haircuts, and good prices. I have been a loyal client of Van Michael Salon for 18 years. I have used several differrent stylists and they always get it right. You can feel confident that any stylist at Van Michael can take care of you. With on going training, you can be sure that any request can be fulfilled. I HIGHLY recommend this salon!! I can only think of one point to warn you about .... book your appointment in advance. You will not be able to call and get an appointment immediately, unless someone has cancelled. Tami is the best. She did an awesome razor cut on my red thick hair. Even-though I was late by 9 minutes I was still a person and was treated with-utmost respect. I will definitely visit there again in 8 weeks to trim my a line bob. Also recommend Spa to work at because I was new and looking for a massage therapist position. No bad reviews on that place. This is a great place for cuts and color. I would recommend this place to anyone who value a great product and who isn't afraid to pay for it. It truely reminded me of a Holywood quality type place. The visit was a treat for me and a friend. I would sugest that you make this a once a month item to splurge for the pocket. The stylist are well trained. more

Being a recent resident of the Atlanta area, I have been able to experience a few of the so called ""top rated"" salons in the city. However, I have just really never seem to click with a stylist. Either the cut was a little too edgy/funky or the color would just be an unnatural brassy tone. I had just about given up, when a co-worker of mine came back a little late from her ""lunch"" with absolutely stunning hair! Within minutes I had made my appointment with her colorist, Jude. Although I had to wait almost 3 weeks to get an appointment! \r \r The salon was very busy when I had arrived, but Jude made me feel right at home and really gave me one-on-one attention. From the first few minutes of our consultation, I knew I was in great hands! We went over some options for my ""Fall Color,"" and I was totally impressed with our end results. The perfect mix of highlights and low lights to give my hair depth and dimension. Jude even showed me a few techniques to style my hair, although it never looked so good as when I walked out of the salon that day and I was just going to pick the kids up from Soccer practice!\r \r AND THE HAND MASSAGE.....WOW! Even if the color didn't turn out exactly how I had wished, I would have gone back for the hand massage and shampoo! While my color was processing I never felt like I was forgotten about either. The experience was wonderful! I even made my appointments for the next year! Now I know why it's so hard to get in. Thank you Jude! Thank you Van Michael! You have a client for life! This is my first review on msn. I am so frustrated I had to write it. I have been going to Van Michael for at least 8 to 10 years, actually since one of their owners was a New Talents stylist. In the last 18 to 24 months I have been continuously disappointed. My stylist left Van Michael about 24 months ago. So I tried a new one?thinking of course that I would be pleased with any Van Michael stylist. (I am pleased with a consistent haircut and a prompt appointment.) I tried a new stylist who was excellent. He had been at VM for as long as I had. He left VM within 2 months. I tried another stylist who had been there forever. He was great. He left before by next appointment. This happened a 3rd time between the Buckhead and Midtown locations. Not only does there seem to be high turnover with the stylists but the greeters are NEVER the same and are terribly incompetent. I?ve had calls after calls confirming appointments I never had or had then cancelled. I even had an appointment cancelled only to learn about it when I arrived?and this was for a wedding consultation. I also have been double-booked 4 times in the last 2 years! I guess when you are new to a stylist you do not matter much! One time my stylist started another appointment the same time I arrived. If I wasn?t there with my mom for a wedding consultation then I would have walked out. I should have though because the last straw was that my wedding stylist was over one hour late the day of my wedding and forgot what style I wanted for my hair. I thought the $125 hair consult two weeks earlier was supposed to prevent that from happening. Van Michael: What is going on? The stylists still seem to be well-trained but the operations is suffering so much that this long-term client will never go back. more

The second that I walked into the salon I was greeted by 3 people from the staff. They checked me in, walked me to the changing room, and waited for me to introduce me to my stylist! The whole staff was very friendly. I had a head massage before my hair was washed and a hand massage while I was getting it cut. It was great! I originally went there because they use Aveda and am so happy to find such a great salon with a huge focus on customer service! more

After searching for the perfect stylist to work with my curly hair for 38 yrs I finally found the one! Jon Whittaker. See previous review. So I went to make my appointment w jon only to find out he had left. Distressed beyond belief, the receptionist offered to book me with someone else. I of course declined then the receptionist rudely wouldnt tell me where he had gone. Then they insulted me days later with a stock postcard mailout that offered me to stay with the salon for a half price haircut. Glad to know what I was worth as a customer to them. I threw it in the trash because its not about the salon, its about my Jon! Thank the heavens above I caught wind that he had left to open his own salon. Jon David Salons in the Highlands. I am putting up this review to assist his many curly followers to help find him. Thanks Van Michael but no thanks. You lost a great asset to your company. As someone with curly/wavy hair, haircuts are usually something I don't look forward to since I've had some bad ones over the years. That changed a year and a half ago when I came to Van Michael. Going on some reviews from other sites, I went to see Jon and left AMAZED at what he was able to do. Not only did he cut my hair so that it was the most flattering whether I wore it straight or curly (no easy feat), but worked to get my hair healthy so that it truely looked its best. While some call him the curly hair god, in my book he'll stay the curly hair guru for what he's done. Not to mention the fact that he's friendly and talks with his clients while he performs his magic. Pros: Great location, the best stylist in town, friendly staff Cons: None! more

For years I went to the same stylist and when he moved out of state, I thought I would never be happy again. A friend told me to see Nikki...and it was the best thing I could have done. She foiled my hair, and honestly I have never seen it better! She really knows what she is doing and if she leaves me, I have no idea of what I will do. I am a long time customer of the Buckhead salon and I agree, Jon is the best! And I have straight (well, slightly wavy) hair. I know he does great curly hair, because I've brought most of my family to him and he's done wonders with them, but he's also brilliant on straight hair. I always get tons of compliments on my hair, all thanks to Jon. He is such a nice, friendly and funny person, too. And if you're looking for a colorist, Amber is great, too..she really listens and works with you. The receptionist staff tend to be on the clueless side, and it's true the construction/parking/remodeling situation has been a pain, but that aspect will be over soon. After reading the reviews for jon at Van michaels in Buckhead I decided to call him up. I have naturally curly hair and I am always scared to get my hair cut because 90% of people do not know how to cut it. Not the case with this guy. He is AWESOME!! Normally I would highly recommend Van Michael's in Buckhead but not NOW. Miles is incredible and has been doing great things for my hair for 10 years. For about 5 years the front door staff and the front desk staff were impeccable. Now they are rude and inconsiderate. I was VERY disappointed on my last visit. To top it all off the parking is a disaster right now and they are not apologizing or compensating for this very well. Go to Van Michael, but not until they clean up their act. 7 yrs ago, someone recommended Jon to my sister. When I saw her hair, it was beautiful. She looked the best she ever did!! It was youthful and very becoming. I made an appointment with Jon. I have curly hair and all my life had a hard time finding someone to cut it right. I was so used to being disappointed and hated my hair!! I made an appointment with Jon. I brought a picture of a magazine model for him and asked him ""please dont touch the length"" (I was used to someone ALWAYS cutting it off). When Jon was finished, I was so surprised to see that my hair looked just like the picture AND I still had the length!! No one else cuts my hair!! I can actually say that I love my hair now. He always does exactly what I want, and it always looks pretty!! more
