The service sucked pretty bad. The food was ""Okay"" I've had much better. I chose this resturant based on the reviews from this site and I have no idea why this resturant receive...

My Tuesday Night ritual 4/24/2007

mccallbenn Provided by Partner
I have Indian food delivered every Tuesday night, from Star of India. I get the same thing: Shrimp Tandoori Masala, Veggie Samosas with Mango Chutney, 4 pieces of Naan and their "fried Rice" (basmati rice with raisins, almonds, peas, etc) Every Tuesday, I thank God for this restaurant. Seriously... the Tandoor Masala is by far the most scrumptious dish I've ever eaten. (My pal says the chicken Tandoori Masala is the best SHE'S had too.) So sweet and savory. It's Weds morning now, and I am craving the leftovers in my fridge, as I type this review. Pros: Tandoor Masala sauce, Free delivery, 15% Off for Citysearchers! Cons: Melrose parking more

BEST INDIAN FOOD EVER 2/24/2007

I have eaten at every single indian food restaurant you can possibly name... Bombay, other star of Indias, by the way, this is not the same as other ""star of indias"" they don't compare to this one...\r \r This is by far the best ever, its inexpensive, friendly, and their food is the best EVER! The Chicken Tikka Marsala is the most amazing thing on the entire planet, its rich, creamy and tastes like CANDY literally this thing taste like CANDY! I like to order it with no spice, just a preference... The naan is simply amazing, nowhere else could serve better either... \r \r If anything, you have to go there and try the chicken tikka marsala its the best in the world, I have taken numerous people there who say the same thing... YOU WILL BE INSTANTLY HOOKED>\r \r \r I live in florida now and I had the opportunity to get in contact with them and they where so nice about handing out the recipe now that I was away, since I am a frequent customer they know me well..\r \r \r I LOVE THIS PLACE! Pros: best indian food ever, best price, best service Cons: none. more

Ripped off. 11/11/2006

We arrived on a Saturday at noon and the waiter seemed to expect us to eat the buffet. After waiting about ten minutes to flag the waiter down again after seating us we asked to see menus. We ordered two chicken curry entrees and ended up waiting about twenty minutes before receiving food. When we received the food it was only the meat dish, no rice or soup though the menu specified that they should be included. We asked for naan and the waiter seemed very irritated but brought it out eventually. When we received the bill we were charged the ""a la carte"" rate instead of the lunch rate even though it was about 1pm by that time. So all told we paid 30 bucks for two dishes of chicken curry, no rice, no soup and were charged for the naan. We asked the waiter about the bill and were told we'd have to talk to someone in charge. We waited around to talk to someone but when no one seemed willing to come out from the back we finally left. \r So if you want the buffet it seems to work ok judging by what other revieweres have said, but don't try ordering from the menu or you will be RIPPED OFF. more

Best Indian in Los Angeles - A hidden gem 7/10/2006

Okay, so I've eaten at nearly every Indian Restaurant in Los Angeles (and several in London) and this one is my favorite. No, not for decor and atmosphere (Bombay Palace and Electric Lotus win there) but for the food. And not only is it arguably the best Indian food in LA, it's also a bargain. The cheap lunch buffet is fine, but if you only go for the buffet you'll miss some of the best things on the menu.\r The Chicken Tikka is the best I've had - large chunks of all white meat chicken, perfectly seasoned (great for all you low carb folks). The khurmas and the masalas are excellent as well. Saag Paneer, saag aloo, the various naans... It's all great (they make a naan with coconut and fruit in it that is suitable for dessert). The soup that comes with each dinner is average, but it's free.\r All in all, a great undiscovered gem. Service is great (partly because the place is rarely crowded) and the atmosphere is a bit plain but clean. Pros: best food at the best prices, a large back room for banquets and parties Cons: parking on melrose can be tricky more

Not that great 10/23/2005

The service sucked pretty bad. The food was ""Okay"" I've had much better. I chose this resturant based on the reviews from this site and I have no idea why this resturant received a 9.1.....I would give it a 4. The servers were not organized or friendly, they all seemed tired and bored. The atmosphere was kind of cramped and very plain, no color. There are two other indian resturants within walking distance of this one and I suggest checking out one of those first....well unless you want the 15% discount coupon that is offered through city search/star of india....I wonder why they are the only resturant offering this discount....Hmmm? Cons: sad & tired waitstaff, Eh...Food, Boring ambience more

Really excellent Indian food 9/23/2005

lindamoore Provided by Partner
My husband is British, and so, quite particular about Indian cuisine, and I've eaten in many, many Indian restaurants over the years. I have to say that Star of India is by far the best and most consistent Indian restaurant in Los Angeles, that I've visited. The dining room is clean and pretty, and the service is prompt and very friendly. Their menu has all the typical dishes, plus some slightly different ones - and everything is just well-prepared and tasty. Their Saag dishes are wonderful, their chicken tikka masala is one of the best I've had anywhere. Their Bhuna dishes have plenty of fresh tomato and onions - and overall most dishes are not very oily. I'd recommend Star of India to anyone. more

Friendliness/ service very unsatisfactory 5/25/2005

Most of the Indian Restaurant serve almost same food except one in North hollywood and may be that one mix up Indian and Bangladeshi style of cooking thats why they are different. What makes different is the Service and this particular restaurant is just like the cheap restaurant you can see in the road side of Bombay or Calcutta. Sorry to say that we were not satisfied at all. more

The best value is their buffet. It is very nice and spacious inside. The food was excellent. There are not many other Indian restaurants where I liked the food as much as here. Buffet included a delicious selection. If you like Indian food you should definitely try this place. more
