I seriously had no clue what it meant to get a ""GOOD"" haircut until I went to Anthony. I decided to go from super long to super short and it was like the lady cut it with a but...

Charlie Hodges Rocks! 5/7/2010

Charlie Hodges has been cutting my hair the last 2 years and I love him!! He's so friendly and does what I want. But basically, I let him do his thing and it always turns out perfect. We like to play and experiment so it's cool. He loves cutting Asian hair and does a great job! Pros: cute and personable, great garden Cons: a bit south for me cause I live north more

I love his Hair Luvin 5/6/2010

Anthony takes his time in getting to know you and what your hair needs - it needs his Hair Luvin! I had a serious case of alopecia in the front of my head. It was so embarrassing. He gave me a gorgeous cut & color. After seeing him for about 6 mos I have beautiful hair. I feel sexy and I can hold my head up high. He asked me to trust him and I did. I've followed him from San Antonio - His Hair Luvin is devine!!! more

Downtown Anthony Brown 4/25/2010

As a guy with hair ""issues,"" i.e. thinning in the front and a little on the very top, I have a hard time finding people who can cut my hair so that it draws attention away from the balding spots... but after visiting Anthony, I finally got a haircut that made me feel totally GQ for the first time since I started losing my hair. He really spent the time to figure my hair out and went through several steps to make sure it turned out right. I really respect a person who takes the time to continue learning his/her craft even after mastering it. Anthony takes his art seriously, and it shows (on the customer, that is). On another note, I got to meet the owner Sovay and hang out with her while Anthony cut, and she made me feel right at home. I had a blast, you guys! Thanks for the experience and for such great service. Pros: sees to your personal hair needs Cons: great talker and listener -- easy to lose track of time! more

Anthony Brown at Salon Sovay 4/18/2010

Anthony has been cutting my hair for eight years now, and even though I no longer live in Austin I wait to get my haircut with him when I visit town. Anthony will really listen to you and give you a style that works with your personality and lifestyle. He also cut my boyfriend's hair for the first time the other day, and did a fantastic job on his hair as well. I highly recommend Anthony - he is wonderful! Pros: Great attention to detail, great location more

Anthony Brown Best Stylist I've Ever Had 4/9/2010

The first visit I had with Anthony, he chatted with me while feeling the texture and direction that my hair naturally likes to grow. Afterwards he suggested a haircut that perfectly suited my face and lifestyle. Every haircut is an enjoyable experience, not just the haircut but the company and conversation. You can tell he is concentrating on your hair even during the lighthearted chat sessions. I highly recommend him for haircuts of any style, but especially shorter to midlength bobs. more

Erica is an artist 4/7/2010

Was a long time client of Pink. When they closed I went to Ann Kelso, but when they closed I became fed up with salons. Love the concept of Salon Sovay. Stylists are independent, all working in a central (very cool and hip) location. Thought I would give it a try. Erica came recommended because I have thick hair and I love heavily layered, textured cuts. I went in with a picture and my fingers crossed... By far, the BEST hair cut I have ever received. Love a stylist who listens to you, but also makes suggestions to improve on my vision of the perfect style. Walked out of there four inches of hair lighter - with the exact cut I wanted. Just thrilled. Pros: Perfect more

Ask for Anthony 3/31/2010

Anthony has been doing my hair for 5 years now and has a new home at Salon Sovay. He has taken me from short to long, from natural to colored, and everything in between; The most important part is that I have been happy every time! He will always take you down a good path for your lifestyle and personality. I was also impressed with the atmosphere Salon Sovay. Everyone I met made me feel right at home. If you are in Austin and need ANYTHING done to your hair, give Anthony a call. Pros: Style, Professionalism, Atmosphere more

You must see Anthony! 3/30/2010

Anthony Brown has been working on my hair for a couple of years. I went to Anthony after having a run with bad cuts and bad color jobs. He spent the time to see what color I want my hair and delivered! He also gives me consistent cuts that are easy to style and need very little work. Anthony is creative and will suggest cuts that are lifestyle appropriate, but will not age you. Pros: Personable, Meticulous, Artistic more

Best haircut and color by Anthony Brown 3/25/2010

I went to Anthony Brown at Salon Sovay and got the best haircut and color ever. He even recommended a great non lather shampoo that has helped to keep my red hair red! The salon is extremely laid back and chill and everyone is super nice. I had a great experience at Salon Sovay. If you book an appointment, ask for Anthony! Pros: Great hair cut and color, cool laid-back salon more

Charlie Hodges is simply the best there is! 3/8/2010

I was referred to Charlie 3 years ago by co-workers and I have never regretted listening to them about him. He has cut, colored and styled my hair to perfection each time. What's best ... he understands my type of hair and has given me a cut and color that works best with it. I have very fine, thin hair with very little body. He understands this type of hair very well. Where other stylists have overprocessed my hair leaving it burned and broken, he has never done that. He has worked with me to find a color that is close to my own. As a result, as I gray and my color grows out, it does so with a completely natural look. There is never a color line. He has given me a cut that suits me well and gives me a professional, up-to-date look while being very easy to style. He has always taken additional time to talk with me about styling techniques. I've never been disappointed with the results. I count Charlie as one of my very good friends. Pros: Personable, knowledgeable, professional, works with me. more

Look No Further. 2/13/2010

With Charlie, I always know I'm going to get my hair exactly how I want it. I've been going to Charlie for several years now and he is always up on the latest trends and can execute flawlessly. I highly recommend him... and the salon in general. Top tier stylist and salon!! Pros: Talented, Comfy, Personable, Private more

BEST STYLIST IN TOWN 2/13/2010

Charlie has been doing my hair for 6 years. I give him free range to be creative and my hair has come out beautiful every time. Not to mention his cuts are awsome. He does the most amazing bob. If you want a friendly, knowledgeable cut and color stylist go see charlie. You won't be disappointed. Pros: awsome stylist, cute and laid back atmosphere more

Bad cut, bad color (nice guy) 2/12/2010

I went to Charlie Hodges at Salon Sovay after doing extensive research on Citysearch and other Web sites, on which both he and the salon had gotten great reviews. I needed to update my highlights and get a trim, since I was trying to grow my hair out. To start with, the Salon is in a great location and has a very comfortable vibe - same with Charlie. He has his own private room, which is great, and he's very personable. However, that's where the good things end. Charlie told me that he couldn't do what I wanted with my hair for a variety of reasons (none of which had ever prevented my previous stylist from turning out excellent results), but we agreed on an intermediary step that we could develop into something better in the future. Ugh. Instead of trimming my hair, he cut huge chunks out of random sections. After blow-drying, he had to be pressed repeatedly to use a straightener, even though it was impossible to see what the cut was like without him doing so. When it was finally dry and straight, it was obvious that he had not let the color process long enough - there was a clear dark halo around the top of my head. After pointing this out, he agreed to correct the color the next week. I went back in, but he did not correct his earlier error - instead, he brightened ALL of my hair. It is now way blonder than I ever wanted. Furthermore, it looks horrifically fake - huge sections were left untouched, while others are verging on platinum. If you put it in a ponytail, it looks streaky and dirty. I couldn't do anything else about the color without doing serious damage to my hair, but the cut was a whole different problem. In the two days after my cut, three friends sat me down to tell me how uneven it was. It was true - one side was at least 3/4 of an inch shorter than the other. I would have gone back and had him fix it, but at that point it was a taste issue - there was no way that looked good, and I didn't want to hear additional excuses about why he couldn't do things that other stylists could and would do in a heartbeat (like an even cut). I ended up paying $80 to get the cut corrected at another salon (Waterstone Aesthetics, it's great). So much for growing my hair out - they had to cut another 1 1/2 inches off to get rid of Charlie's chunks. Pros: Peaceful, Reasonably priced Cons: Uneven cut, bad color, no accountability more

Awesome eyelash perms! 2/12/2010

Sovay does the best eyelash perms. I have gone to several other places in Houston and no one does as good of a job as she does. At some of the other places I have gone it was a little uncomfortable, but Sovay is very gentle and even relaxing. She produces wonderful results everytime. I wouldn't recommend anywhere else for an eyelash perm or tint but Sovay! more

Who would fly 2000 miles for a haircut? 1/24/2010

I would fly 2000 miles for a haircut...as long as Miss Sovay is holding the scissors! \r I left my beloved neighborhood in South Austin in November 2008, to move 2000 miles back to the Mountians of Vermont. Salon Sovay was a part of my life in that neighborhood and community. \r I remember when the Salon first opened and I met Sovay. This gorgeous girl was on her hands and knees with her hair up and old jeans on, slaving away painting, scraping and building her salon from a run down old house. She was passionate and determined to create a great salon, never complaining about the hard work. \r I was one of the first people to get a haircut there and was hooked immediately. She approaches her work as an artist, and as a musician I could relate to that language. She also attends seminars and workshops with the best in the industry. It was always fun to hear her stories on the latest thing she learned because her dedication and enthusiasm are so authentic. \r When I came back for the emotional closing of my house last month, I called Sovay and she went out of her way during her off hours to schedule me in. She also (unsolicited) offerred to ship me products from her Salon. She genuinely likes to make people happy and cares about each client. \r I am coming back in April and will not let anyone touch my hair until I get there, I do not care how frizzy my hair gets until then. Sovay is an uptown girl in high heels, yet really a good old South Austin girl with an artist's soul. She puts her heart into her work and goes every extra mile for each client. That is why I will go 2000 miles to get my haircut at Salon Sovay. \r I miss Y'all!\r Becca Pros: Professional's eye, artists soul, Sovay Rocks! Cons: 2000 miles away from Vermont! more

Charlie Hodges will give you the best platinum 1/14/2010

I've been going to see Charlie Hodges at Salon Sovay since August, and I've never had a better cut and color in my life. I grew up in Philadelphia and went to the same stylist since I began coloring my hair eight years ago. I moved to Austin and after calling Salon Sovay and getting a consultation on the phone, I made an appointment with Charlie. I color my hair platinum, and over the years it's been difficult to get and maintain a true almost-white blonde. After my first visit with Charlie, I had the most perfect shade of platinum ever. Every time I've gone back, Charlie has been meticulous about making sure each strand is perfect, and there are no yellow spots or missed patches. In fact, Charlie is extremely professional and takes a lot of pride in making sure his clients are 100% pleased with his work. I really can't stress enough how perfect my color has been since I've been seeing Charlie. Anyone who colors their hair platinum knows it's very difficult to achieve a uniform color and then to maintain it. Charlie will give you the best platinum, there's no question about it. In addition to that, my hair cuts are always amazing. I really like having edgy hair that I can play with and style many different ways, but still stay feminine. Charlie gives me exactly what I want every time. He's a super guy. Awesome color, awesome cuts, and overall he's so friendly and down to earth that I always look forward to coming in to see him. Go to Salon Sovay and see Charlie, go platinum, and you'll never go anywhere else. Pros: pretty much everything Cons: none that I've encountered more

Marcy Hoen makes my hair (and life) better! 1/11/2010

I came to see Marcy to get a new cut and style for my longish curly hair after 1. years of homemade haircuts follow by 2. nearly 9 months of backpacking around the world. Clearly, I was in need of a change and spiff up. I was recommended to Marcy by a mutual friend and was not disappointed. I came in with no clear vision, but was hoping to leave looking like a rock star, and said as much to Marcy. We came up with an AWESOME plan, which was executed with skill and confidence. It looked great and made me feel fabulous, rock and roll, and pretty all at once. An incident after my most recent cut by Marcy (a honed and fresh rendition of the initial style) goes like this: I get my hair cut, go to a hot and vigorous yoga class during which I put my hair in a pony tail. When on my way out of yoga I let my hair down and shake it out and a woman passing me on the street stops and says, ""Oh my god. You have the best hair I have ever seen EVER!"" In short, Marcy's vision and skill are such that my hair looks good all the time. I'd recommend her unconditionally. Pros: constant compliments on my 'do, even after a hot yoga class more

very personable, friendly staff in a quaint, inviting settin 12/29/2009

The visit started off with a ""phone consultation"" during which the person who answered the phone took about twenty minutes to understand what we were looking for, and what type of hair we had. Based on this consultation, she matched us up with a stylist she felt would be best for us. When we arrived to the salon, my stylist (Tracie) took several minutes to get to know what type of hair I had, and what style I was looking for. She also recommended something based on my face structure. During the cut, Tracie was very friendly and we had a pleasant conversation. The person who cut my sister's hair ended up being the owner- and my sister turned out looking like a bombshell!! Both of our cuts were great and we had such a pleasant experience with this salon. The prices I felt were very reasonable and I would highly recommend this salon to anyone!! Pros: staff was friendly, seemed to be very knowledgeable Cons: none that I can think of more

Tracie Downing at Sovay 12/27/2009

Tracie has been taking care of my hair for 4 years and I always walk out feeling that my overall appearance is perfectly enhanced. For the first few times she would ask me what I wanted from that particular visit, but now I just hand myself over to her care with no direction needed. It's that easy - walk in, walk out looking so much better with no worries. more

Anthony Brown at Salon Sovay 12/13/2009

I just got an incredible, cute, hip short cut from Salon Sovay's newest stylist, Anthony Brown. He rocks! He took the time to make my hair look fabulous, was professional and obviously very passionate. I feel like a total rock star!!!! Sovay did my highlights and they are equally fabulous. She put just the right amount of blonde in my hair to accentuate my eyes and right afterwards, when at the grocery store, a clerk actually commented to me about how pretty my eyes were! Pros: Anthony Brown's cutting skills!!! more
