Simple and Great 3/8/2010

Some might not like that a place runs out of food but I believe its the mark of a great restaurant. Would you rather have food that is a day old or something fresh? At Ron's everything is cooked daily and it's easy to know all this because if you get there too late in the evening all of the favorites are usually gone. It's certainly well worth the trip and get there before 8pm and you will be fine. Love the food and the sides. Pros: Everything food related and the staff Cons: get there early more

Delicious 1/28/2010

I really like Ron's Ribs. The owner is very nice. The reason the hours are odd is probably because he re-enrolled in college a while back. He's a super friendly guy. Sure it's a pain that the hours are odd, but personally I think that's what makes this place so special! Pros: friendly establishment, good food Cons: odd hours more

Please buy this place and save it from themselves 9/20/2009

I have to admit that as much as I can not stand the folks who work there, the desire for the ribs is to great. I eat them plain, no sauce, and keep the sides. The ribs are out of this world, but everything else is garbage. They use the least expensive ingredients, the service is disgraceful, and they do not know the meaning of consistency. They keep odd hours, run out of ribs (how do you run out of your main product?) have a very rude young lady who works there. I'm amazed that they are still here. It's time to take a mop and bucket, get a new owner, and bring this gem back to glory Pros: The ribs Cons: The folks who work there more

Best beef ribs in corn bread in the city 9/4/2009

Lured in by the smell of smoke, I got one of the best meals I've had in this city. Easily The best cornbread I've had anywhere above North Carolina. Fantastic beef and pork ribs that would make even the best southern pit masters salivate( We ordered the beef ribs and Ron gave us a sample of his fantastic pork ribs, both went great with his spicy bbq sauce. Delicious mac and cheese as well. Can't wait to try there pigs feet, they;ll be my first and based on the smells emanating from the restaurant, I know they'll be good. Pros: corn bread, ribs Cons: doesn't take credit cards more

one time event 8/27/2009

1st time i stumbled across this place after just moving to the city it was great. i got the beef ribs and the chicken. the sides were pretty good, but the mac and cheese can use a little work. either way the service was girl and the one girl working there was fast and polite. now the 2nd time a whole nether experience. supposedly the guys i met was ron himself but rumor has it that i met kevin and that ron actually died years ago..fraud!! anyways he seemed real rushed and occupied with whatever was going on next door. i felt absolutely no hospitality. and they are still yet to have a menu to take home. this time i got the pork. BAD IDEA, they were terrible and the foolish man thought he could fake me out by puttin one juicy slab on top wit boat load of sauce while the bottom slabs were dry enough for fire would. i didnt finish the meal, i was embarassed that PHIilly would promote such an establishment. and talk about irresponsible they dont even have set hours. i am sure that ron would not appreciate it. its like either be a resturante and have normal hours or go do watever u need to do next door and close the shop down for the serious business owners. south street is letting me down for bbq. i give up!! Pros: yams and green Cons: pork ribs more

Nothing special here... 2/14/2009

Was driving through the city today with my daughter, and passed this place on South Street. Being in the mood for BBQ, I thought I'd give it a shot. I even checked reviews on my cell phone before going in, and thought I found a gem with all of the glowing reviews...\r \r The place is definitely a dive, which isn't a problem. A very small place, that emits a nice smokey aroma. I thought that the menu was on the size of an index card, was a little strange, but once again no big deal. So I ordered...Chopped pork sandwich, corn bread and baked mac and cheese. Thought this would be plenty for my daughter and I to split. Opted for the pork instead of the ribs, because my daughter is only 17 months . Thought I'd be able to keep my hands cleaner with a sandwich. Food was ready in no time, and was definitely steaming hot. Except, I was a little surprised to find out that sandwich meant BBQ pork laying on white bread. I'm not anti-whitebread, but this is not the time for it. If it was at least toasted ,I would have been ok with it. The white bread quickly turned to a sloppy mess. The pork itself was so-so. Nothing special here. Same with the sides, they were ok. The $12 for the meal seemed a bit pricey for what it was, but not a big deal. I'd pass on this place, unless the ribs are that much better. Pros: Its in the city? Cons: Bad BBQ, smoke in the restaurant more

Then ONLY place for ribs in Philly! 9/12/2008

I've been suckin down ribs from this South Street storefront since 1979 (Formerly Bea Bea's Lawnside BBQ). The neighborhood has changed alot over the years ( for the better) but the ribs and the sauce have stayed great. Very consistent quality of meat, always slow cooked in the wood fired pit. Several sides available but the cornbread and candied yams are the best. I like to mix the hot and mild sauce - hot sauce alone will definitely make you sweat. Smokey inside but there are several tables outside that make a nice place to eat to stay on the street.. Kevin is the owner and BBQ master. Interesting guy to talk with on a wide array of topics. Highly recommended even if you have to drive in from the burbs. Pros: Awesome ribs Cons: I can't eat ribs every day more

LOVE the food and service 8/11/2008

I was on vacation in philadelphia heard about RONS RIBS through a few friends it was some of the best barbeque I have eaten in a long time the owner ron was there not only did he have good food the service was great its a little place but its worth the wait ( its was a line) , the Beef ribs where delicious, cornbread out of this world the sauce is HOT, thanks RON can not wait to come back from LA to try you again keep up the good work Pros: Good customer service Cons: Wish i could eat more more

no service 8/9/2008

i had heard good things about ron's ribs. growing up in the south i love great bbq. i heard ron's was the best, so i went. the website says they're open till 3am on the weekend, i figured that wasn't true, but i went anyway around 12 one night, not open. that wasn't such a big deal, so i went back a few days later....at 8pm. not open. again i went during the evening and again they weren't open. i give up on ron's bbq. i have since asked around and people are not so pleased with ron's anymore, quality is down and apparently they are all a bunch of potheads, so im told, buy other potheads. i guess there to busy smoking to be smoking ribs, how unfortunate. Pros: good word of mouth Cons: never open more

the shiznack 7/12/2008

As I was walking down south street with a friend, I was looking for places we could eat later on in the day. Once we smelt this delicious smell, our mouths watered and we HAD TO come in immediately. I am happy to say that Ron's ribs, tastes even better than it smells. They were VERY freindly and their prices made me happy. As a matter of fact, I'm about to head up to Ron's ribs right.................. about............ NOW! Pros: Exallent food and friendly service Cons: I got full before i could try something else... i guess that's a PRO haha more

Bar-B-Que chicken 7/10/2008

I am a great lover of bar-b-que chicken and quite picky about it. I also do not eat beef or pork. I have been hunting for great bar-b-que chicken since moving to Philly and have tried a couple of highly rated places. None of them come close to the flavor and texture here. The meat is beautifly cooked and the sauce is tasty. Pros: great food and service Cons: cash only more

The sauce is out of this WORLD 6/29/2008

My boyfriend is a carnivore and he's had his share of ribs. One bite of Ron's pork ribs and he claimed that it was the best ribs he's ever had. I ordered the pork sandwich with a mix of the hot and mild sauce and it was PERFECT. I like spicy but not too spicy where I can't taste anything. I would just eat the sauce if I could. The sides were OK; I guess the other reviews hyped it up too much for me. In any case, if you want to eat some good ribs, go to Ron's. Pros: Food, friendly service Cons: Very hot and small area more

Ron's Ribs 5/30/2008

We heard great things about the place but were very disapointed. We ordered a full order 8 ribs to go and when we arrived home realized we were a rib short as well as the ribs were all seperate with half the meat from the ribs not on the bone.....AND NOT IN OUR TO GO BOX!!!!. It was $26 not including tax and we felt very ripped off. MAKE SURE YOU CHECK YOUR ORDER BEFORE YOU GO AND ASK FOR A COMPLETE SET AND NOT INDIVIDUAL RIBS Pros: DECENT TASTE Cons: VERY POOR VALUE FOT THE PRICE more

BBQ at its best 4/17/2008

Found Ron's just walking by. Nothing fancy, but GOOD!! Real Good. BBQ Pork with the hot sauce, greens, yams, red beans and rice, cornbread, cole slaw. all worth writing home to mom about except she was there with me and thought it was excellent too. forget all the fancy places down the street. eat ron's til you can't eat no more.\r Pros: No-frills home-made BBQ, with all the fixins more

Best Barbeque in Philly 4/15/2008

I have tried alot of Barbeque but this one of the best sauces I have tasted the place is a small hole in the wall on south st alot of my friends said its been there for over 70 years and when i walk in it look like right out of the thirties so if you looking to get the barbeque smell on thats the place, good service, good ribs fell right off the bone HOT SAUCE was crazy try a mix collard and BAKE MAC was perfect so if you get into Philly and you LIKE OLD STYLE FLAVOR and SAUCE GO TO RONS RIBS the best Pros: GOOD FOOD GOOD SERVICE Cons: Dont wear your best cloths more

Ew. 3/30/2008

After reading all of the reviews on Ron's Ribs we were really excited to go try it out. Unfortunately it was the worst food we have ever tasted in our entire lives. I hope that the restaurant has been sold to someone else because I cannot understand why there are so many good reviews on it. You will undestand what I mean the second you walk into the building. AND the bathroom floor is caving in and soggy. Pros: It is a fun part of the city Cons: everything more

Best Ribs Ever! 3/24/2008

The Ribs are great, the service is great and we took some home the next day. I ate at this restaurant back in the 80's and today, nothing has changed. \r \r Visit Ron's Ribs in Philly! Pros: Food, Service, Price Cons: Parking can be minimal more

Finger licking good 3/6/2008

On New Year's Day my friend and I dined at Ron's Ribs and it was quite a tasty experience. I ordered the BBQ pork ribs, collard greens and macaroni and cheese and everything tasted fantastic. The mac n cheese was cheesy and not dry or overcooked, the greens were well seasoned and not bitter and the BBQ--oh the BBQ--was fall-off-the-bone tender and had just the right flavor combination. I was a brave soul and decided to try to the spicy BBQ sauce on my ribs and boy was it hot. My mouth was on fire but it was so good I couldn't stop eating it! That's just how good these ribs were.\r \r The owner served us our meal and then chatted with us in the dining area until we left. He had mercy on me and gave me extra bread when my mouth was on fire from the hot BBQ sauce. He ran out of his famous cornbread, but I plan to get a piece on my next visit. This is definitely the place where I will stop for food every time I'm in Philly. Ron's Ribs is highly recommended for good service and great food. Pros: Excellent food and service. Cons: Dining area could be a little bigger. Parking on South Street could be an issue on the weekends. more

Road Trip Review 11/13/2007

Well worth the stop. The food was excellent and the welcome from the owner was even better. Ribs from their open pit fire had the perfect texture and their sauce has been put at the top of our favorite list. We will be back for more. Thanks for everything. - The guys from VT Pros: Sauce, owner, open fire flavor, texture, cornbread was worth the wait. Cons: Not open Monday. more
