My husband and I went last night with some friends. First I love the bar it is intimate and warm. I had a cosmo and it was perfect in a chilled glass. Dinner was excellent and the...

We were hesitant to go as we'd heard conflicting opinions. But, went for my wife's birthday and brought an expensive wine to celebrate - in fact wine was not on Reys wine list. L...

Sub par food to be considered ""Fine Dining"" 3/5/2007

We were disappointed with the Oysters St. Charles appetizer, it was like oysters in oatmeal with very little taste other than salt water. Our entrees were decent but not fantastic. The waiter neglected to tell us about the specials also so others around us were being served things we didn't even know were available. We will not go here again. If we are going to spend $100+ on a meal it will need to be a better meal than this. more

Great smoke room, relaxing couches 2/12/2007

I took a first date there, the owner of my dealership recomended Reys. Great place to dine, the wait staff was very professional. Utmost respect for there customers. Loved the dim lights, really set off the place. I have dined all over the triangle, and havn't recieved service like this in any establishment. The wine selection was phenominal, the steak was tender, cooked to perfection. I would highly recomend Reys. Pros: Service, great food, meeting the owner more

One of the worst upscale dining experiences ever! 2/3/2007

Cons: Expensive, limited beef menu, undercooked food more

Wonderful place 1/21/2007

The food here is phenomenal and the atmosphere is great too. I was happy with the prompt seating and teh 5 star service. I will be going back soon. more

Great food & Great service 1/10/2007

We love this place. We drive 45 min. just to eat here. The owner Rey is great. He is always there when we eat there. The food is great the wait staff is great what more can you ask for. If you liked Ruth Chris then you will love Rey's. The steak is the same, but there is so much more to love. Make a reservation and remember the plates are really hot, so order your steak less cooked the plate will do the rest. Pros: great food and service Cons: make a reservation more

Very disappointed 11/21/2006

I joined an old friend for dinner at Rey's about a month ago. I was extremely disappointed. The food was o.k. at best. I have had better salmon at the Outback (which is usually a last choice). The steak looked good, but it's really not that hard to grill a steak. Everything else was second-rate- table service, the ambiance was stale, they served bottled water (in a .99 cent plastic bottle?), bad salad and overall there was nothing special about the place. For what they tout, they have certainly missed the mark. I am amazed that there is a 9.6 rating. People- you need to get out more often. Cons: Food, ambiance, location, more

Great fine dining 11/10/2006

Rey's is highly recommended by our family. They have a great wine list and the meals were delicious. The side orders were large enough to pass around. The steaks were cooked to perfection using quality meat. The decor is very warm and romantic. We will be back soon. Pros: Quality dining in a warm atmosphere Cons: Not recommended for children more

Great atmosphere and food 11/6/2006

Wonderful atmosphere and food. Great place for adults. Food is delicious and priced appropriately. I wouldn't recommend taking children but I'm sure they are welcome. Have a drink at the bar with a cozy warm atmosphere and the fireplace is roaring (seasonal). The people that work there want to make you happy and can't do enough for you. Pros: Service is great. Food is great. Wonderful atmosphere. Cons: I have nothing negative to say. more

Excellent food and service 11/3/2006

Rey's was a great dining experience. They have elegant ambience, and even had live music (this was on a Friday). All of the food we ordered was cooked perfectly and was delicious. The tuna appietizer, the creamed corn, and the French Quarter chicken were exceptional. I've seen other reviews stating that steaks were not properly cooked, but my husband's was perfect and he ate every bite. Other reviews also stated the martinis were not good; however, we sampled 2 -- the Metropolitian and Lemon Drop (which is not on the menu and is difficult to make correctly), and they were very good. Our waitress was attentive, knew the menu, and did a great job. Rey stopped by our table to make sure everything was to our liking. I was very impressed with our experience at Rey's and look forward to returning soon. Pros: Great food, elegant ambience, live music more

Way Overrated 10/12/2006

I found out about Rey's through city search. I invited one of my good friends to come along for dinner. The prices were ridiculous. The garlic mashed potatoes were cold (sure sign of a microwave). The microwavalbe potatoes wer $4. KFC has better ones. The steak that I ordered was over cooked. At the end of the experiece our waiter took forever to bring the ticket. Stay away Cons: pityful more

Way overrated 9/30/2006

We went to Rey's with a large group (10 adults and 5 children) for a special occasion. We were seated in one of the private rooms. Although service was excellent, the food and drinks were ordinary at best. The martinis were just okay. I had the Hurricaine martini which was only vaguely reminiscent of the famous drink served in New Orleans. I followed that with a Maker's Mark martini (I forgot what they call it but it was supposed to be a New Orleans version of the Manhattan) which was not very good at all and sour mash whiskey is my favorite drink. You wound think after all that booze the food would have to be good. Not so much. The Grilled Chicken and Sausage Gumbo was the only high point of the meal. I ordered a 12 oz Filet medium-well and it came to the table RARE! I also ordered it blackened and as far as I could tell, it was not. I can make a much better steak than that for a fraction of the cost on my grill at home! The side dishes were nothing to write home about either. The Lyonnaise Potatoes Pros: Excellent service, nice ambiance Cons: Below average food, especially for the price more

Been There, Done That, Don't want the T-shirt 8/16/2006

My husband and I recently spent our 9th anniversary with a dinner at Rey's. Probably not the best choice. Although the ambience is nice, our servers kept changing. One took the entree order, one pour the water, one took the dessert order and the check. Good grief! Maybe we smelled bad. Oh well. The dinner was mediocre. Nothing to write home about. The chicken piccata was a bit chewy, and could have been bursting with flavor, but someone missed the mark. The creme brulee should have been named soup brulee. What a disappointment. Even with a $25 gift certificate we still paid enough to refinance our house. Sorry Rey, we were just not impressed. Pros: Nice ambience Cons: Average food more

Amazing food 6/13/2006

I really enjoyed dining there. Though it is far away for me (N. Raleigh), I think I'll make the trip frequently. My wife said her filet mignon was the best she's ever had. My waiter was great, the chef came out and spoke with diners, and the owner made the rounds as well- a nice touch. Pros: Ambience, Food prices, Lounge Cons: Wine prices, corking fee more

Our favorite! 4/11/2006

It is like Cheers! We have been quite a few times to dine at Rey's and EVERYONE knows our names. It is nice to be remembered and recognized. The food is exceptional and I highly recommend getting whatever the chef's nightly special is... we have not been disappointed yet! Oh, and you have to try the cheesecake - WOW! DELICIOUS!!!!!! Everything is homemade, from the bleu cheese dressing (best in town)to the chocolate raspberry truffle cake. (need I say more) Sometimes we eat in the lounge/bar rather than the dining room and the service is still perfect. Give it a try - you wont be sorry! Pros: atmosphere, service, Rey more

A Work in Progress 2/7/2006

Waiters should be more knowledgeable but they make an effort. Crab cocktail was fresh. Remoulade had a balance of heat and flavor. Fried oysters would have benfited by salt and cayenne. Filet mignon was average needing more hollandaise. Only one tournados had crab. Quickly remedied but should have been caught before it left the kitchen. Grouper was superb. Bananas Foster was dessert, made personally by Rey. It took a while to get the ingredients set up at our table. By the time he was igniting the brandy our vanilla ice cream had nearly melted. Still, they drew customary oohs and ahs from nearby tables. Ours was a romantic dinner, but it could also be a large adult-only group with a few apple martinis and some steaks. All in all Reys was good, but still a work in progress. Which way they head will depend on their committment to their craft. Pros: Attention to Ambiance, Efforts to please, Wine list Cons: Familiar Food, Green Staff, Small portions more

excellent 1/4/2006

I dined at Rey's with a large group and found the food and service to be superb. I would highly recommend this restaurant to friends. more

Very Disapointed 12/31/2005

I should have listened to the reviews... Rey's does not come close to ""fine dining with a french quarter flare."" The service was mediocre at best with little knowledge of the menu and far from fine dining expectations. The steaks were okay, little flavor to them, the Lyonnaise Potatoes were undercooked and not true lyonnaise -- the potatoes did not have the onion flavor as they should if cooked properly. The dessert I ordered, bread pudding, was obviously microwaved and spongy. Overall, not worth the expense. Pros: ambience Cons: service more

Disappointing first visit 12/17/2005

My husband and I recently took some business colleagues to Rey's for the first time. Our first impression was nice, as the lounge is an inviting place to have a drink by the fire. While the atmosphere was nice in the dining room, there was a noticable absence of background music. I ordered filet mignon, and found it to be extremely overcooked and tough to chew. I would have sent it back, but I did not want to draw attention to it while entertaining guests. Though friendly, the waiter was more suited to a casual dining restaurant..his level of expertise did not rise to the high end menu. Overall, a very discouraging first visit. I don't think we will return unless it is only to the bar. We tried to really like it as we love to support independant restaurants. In the end, it came up short. Pros: Inviting lounge Cons: Bland food, Mediocre service more

Excellent steaks 12/16/2005

I came here before attending a show and was suprised to find it quite empty. The steak was tasty and cooked perfectly-I shared the 22oz Beef Tenderloin in bordelaise sauce. Watch out for the plates, they heat the dinner plates to 400 degrees. I'd recommend getting additional sides of vegetables-the vegetables that were provided were a bit sparse and a bit dry-almost overcooked. The steak however made up for it, and the Brie appetizer was one of the better Brie spreads I've had. Pros: Service, Parking more

A Night Out 12/12/2005

We love Rey's. Its the restaurant my husband knows is always a sure hit when we have out of town family or business meals. We also enjoy going when its just the two of us. You don't feel rushed to leave. You can enjoy your wine before dinner and your dessert time. Wonderful food. We especially love the Pork Loin. Rey is sometimes in the restaurant and makes our special out of town guest feel welcomed and special. Hope you enjoy. more
