I had tried Phoenix many times. Their Dim Sum is above the average but the dinner is bad. Also they need to improve their service. Pros: Good Parking, Good Dim Sum, Clean ...

Worst ever had! 8/1/2010

The worst place we've even been to. There was no selection whatsoever, and the worst service. We ended up to eat somewhere else afterward just to get rid of the bad taste. Don't go there! Pros: nothing Cons: bad bad food more

Okay, I'm a real sucker for dim sum, especially good dim sum, and Phoenix definitely delivers. I especially... more

I need to set the record straight about Phoenix 3/16/2009

If you go into Phoenix with a Western attitude that you will be waited on hand and foot, your experience may suffer. We have been going to Phoenix for years with excellent results and food. Went again last Sunday and they now have a picture system to assist ordering if the carts are not out. If you see something on a cart that you want, go to the server and request it be brought. If you don't see something coming around, request your server to get it for you. If you just sit there and expect every type of dim sum to be brought to your table, you may be dissapointed. We got every thing that we wanted in an hour period. It was all excellent from 'Dragon Claws' to tripe with turnips. I just had to counter all these negative reviews. Pros: Best dim sum in Chicago more

Abysmal service. 2/16/2009

""My husband and I took his family here this past weekend, and what we were met with was rude, inconsistent service, and a lack of selection, unless we wanted to eat chicken feet. That cart came around three times. The other carts were nowhere to be seen. Pros: food is pretty good Cons: Service, Managerial staff, selection, long wait more

A Chicago must stop 11/23/2008

Whenever we come to Chicago we have to stop at Phoenix. The dim sum is simply awesome. We were there yesterday and the food was incredible as always. We enjoyed everything we had and we tried a variety of dishes. The shrimp dumplings are the best! The service can be spotty but we were seated near the door to one of the samller rooms and were able flag down any cart that appealed to us and usually they stopped every pass. more

happy with the food but not the service 10/7/2008

Great food. Bad customer service. It seems like they serve their own langauge spoken first and bring the food to them often. i hardly had anyone came to my table show me the Dim Sum items. i was waiting to get in for 30 mins.i only have 4 dim sum items.Lucky i ordered some dish on the sides. Ohh well i am happy with the food, it taste good but not the service. more

Shark Fin Soup outrage!!! 4/18/2008

Shark fin is tasteless. The soup is flavored with chicken or beef broth to get flavor. Chinese view sharks as having medicinal qualities, but sharks get tumors, cancer and other diseases as well and no scientific evidence has shown shark fin soup to have ever provided health benefits. Shark Fin Soup has led to the decline of the world's shark populations by up to 90%. Annually millions upon millions of sharks are slaughtered exclusively for their fins. The sharks entire body is then dumped back into the ocean, therefore wasting the entire shark. DON'T EAT HERE!!! more

Never go here again after terrible service 11/25/2007

Used to go for the past 10 years, and I will no longer after my last visit. I was seated in the middle of 15 other tables, so as you can imagine in a DIM SUM place WITH CARTS, you are not going to get any attention. We waited 10 minutes while watching everyone around us getting serviced by the cart servers. Either they are blind or really dumb in not asking the people at the inner tables what they want. It took one of their managers to eventually come and take our order...whats the point of carts and DIM SUM then?!? Even after taking our order, it came out incomplete and when we asked where the rest of our order was, they said its coming. 10 minutes later, and no food, we paid the bill and walked out. Pros: Food tastes good, when you can get service! Cons: Terrible service, seating in the middle of other tables! more

fast service even on a saturday night 7/2/2007

take a pass on their fried calamari, too greasy and they do not give you a dipping sauce. i had to ask for lemons. kung pao chicken is good. shrimp fried rice not too greasy, we also had their shrimp it was good. huge portions we had to take some home. overall food is allright. no harm in trying this place out. the food arrived fast even on a saturday night. fast service. Pros: fast service more

Worst Service EVER!!!!!! 2/25/2007

Want a clean, nice-looking place to sit? This is the place. Want food? DON'T GO HERE!!!! Terrible service, LONG lines, mediocre food, overpriced for dim sum. I went here twice and left both times after waiting patiently for about 30 min (on top of the 30 min spent on waiting to get seated) without any decent food. The only food that came around was the same 2 or 3 carts that we had already sent off because we didn't want any of it. Yet the same carts come around asking you the same questions over and over, and when you ask for some other food, they'll just send back the same carts and look at you like they don't understand what you want. When I complained as i was leaving to the manager up front (or the owner?) about a server who was particularly disgruntled and ruined our dining experience, he told us ""Don't worry. She's a cart-pusher. No education. They're st---d. Next time come up here and tell me what you want"" Aside from the fact that it's completely not-PC, who said I was worried? I was just angry I couldn't pay to eat there. He's the one who should be worrying about the way they run business. I also didn't realize I have to get up and go up to the front desk every time I wanted some food at a dim sum. I'm convince the owner to this place doesn't care much for your business, which is understandable when you see the size of their lines. My advice, do what I did and go to any of the several other dim sum places nearby. You'll probably see better service, cheaper prices, and same food if not better. Pros: Relatively clean and appealing atmosphere for the area Cons: Terrible Service, Takes too long more

Authentic Chinese cuisine 12/22/2006

Clean restaurant, consistent and attentive service even at peak hours. But the food: It's all about the food. Top notch. Pros: Great food, quick service, great price, child friendly, accepts resos. Cons: Loud, crowded. more

Authentic Chinese 10/28/2006

Coming from a very traditional Chinese family, Phoenix is where I always take my visiting relatives since it is one of the best spots for an authentic Cantonese Dim Sum or Dinner. Food is great, service is quick, there is a great 2nd floor view of downtown and the price is very reasonable. Pros: Authentic Chinese, Huge Dinner Menu, Good Prices Cons: Ambiance is not upscale (need to look downtown for that) more

Dim sum 10/24/2006

It's clean. It's good. It's going to be a long wait on Saturday or Sunday. Another authentic place for dim sum. Pros: Dim sum is very good Cons: Wait is very long more

Great Dim Sum 5/11/2006

The restaurant is very clean unlike many other restaurants in Chinatown. The service was quick -- just make it clear you are there for dim sum. Their dim sum menu includes an 8x10 card with photos of all of the items. The waiters and hosts were attentive. For two people eating dim sum, it cost $25 w/out tip. Keep in mind most of the items on their dim sum menu contain shrimp. We went after lunch, around 2 p.m., and it wasn't crowded. Pros: Cost, Location, Fast/friendly service Cons: Dim sum only until 3 more

Be Adventurous 6/9/2005

Dont bother with Dim Sum if youre going to show up late or just order fried rice; youll be better off getting take out and pretending that you know Chinese food. Ive had Dim Sum all over this country, from San Francisco to NYC and the biggest commonality is usually the poor service and cramped dining area of which the Phoenix possesses none. The whole point to Dim Sum is to experiment. Your experience would be incomplete without half of your dishes being something youve never had. The jellyfish is excellent, by the way as well as the squid. This is definitely the stall-style seafood Ive been looking for in a city thats notorious for peanut butter in their egg rolls. Pros: authenticity, food, variety Cons: crowded, wait more

Are you sure you're rating the right place? 6/1/2005

First of all, if you want dim sum go down-stairs, if you want a meal go up-stairs! If don't come early the wait will be long, especially for dim sum. I don't know how the dim sum can be cold and greasy when its steamed and brought right to you...although the dim sum is a bit cooler when served off the carts - I'm not sure if they are still using the carts because they didn't use them the last couple times I went. I've only been upstairs, once, but the service was great and has a better atmosphere. I go weekly for dim sum and have never had a bad experience. The food is pretty authentic - so if your looking for watered-down Americanized ""Chinese"" food, go somewhere else! Pros: food (dim sum), inexpensive Cons: service more

Over Rated, find somewhere better 5/22/2005

After a 20 minute wait, for 4, we were sat at a round 10 person table in the corner. Tables covered with parchment paper. Next if your not there for Dim Sum ask for the Menu, it will not be offered on seating. Food was Cold & Greasy at 1:00pm. No Lunch Menu Pricing. Menu has no descriptions of the offerings. No meal packages, everything ala carte, cup of soup $3, Fried Rice $10, Entrees $10+, must be the pricing of the Dim Sum that allows the Phoenix to call it affordable, but take a Gold Card... If your hungry, find a buffet, the food will be hotter, more variety and affordable... After reading all the rave reveiws, the Phoenix is a major disappointment not just for me as the recommender from the reveiws, but not one member of our party found this establishment worth recommendation. Definitely over rated... Cons: Poor Service, Cold Greasy Food, Expensive Per Person more
