Ototo, At Par With The Best 6/13/2005

Ototo is definately among the tops for sushi quality, taste, and presentation. Every dish was served as if it was a piece of art. The food is fresh and tastey. Don't miss some great appetizers like the seared beef with ponzu sauce. The desserts are to die for. You must have the Grean Tea Tirmasu. Pros: Sushi, Appetizer, Desserts more

Best Sushi in SEattle 4/9/2005

My girlfriend & I make it a habit to sample sushi in every city we go. We've had sushi in Canada, Ireland, England & Holland. In seattle we've been to just about everywhere sushi is served & we both agree the sushi here is the best ever-you won't be disappointed. I can't say enough about it-just go-you'll see!! Pros: sushi more

Great food & service; never a dry cup 3/7/2005

Thats why I never need to say: More toasted-rice green tea, please, despite the fact that my taste buds goad me into pouring copious amounts of the stuff down the hatch. Aside from the tea, my girlfriend and I always start with the excellent tuna poke (suggestion complimentsoRachel, our friendly server). As for sushi rolls, Im partial to the salmon and tuna varieties, but others (like the Spider & Rainbow) are also tasty and beautifully prepared. For dessert, the Green Tea Tiramisu is to die for; thin, alternating layers of delicate cake and pudding-like green-tea filling artfully drizzled with dark-chocolate sauce...*sigh* The ambiance is nice overall. The black, white, and red color scheme, glass-panel wall lights, and sparse decor give the space a modern feel. My only complaints would be the hard chairs and the somewhat tacky looking fake flowers on the wall. At nights end, $30-40 can feed two. Pros: Service, Quality, Desserts Cons: Parking, A bit pricey more

Fantastic Sushi Fantastic Service! 2/6/2005

Before visiting this restaurant I read some of the previous reviews, so I wasn't completely sure how much I would enjoy myself. I have to say that my experience was fantastic. I would recommend going on a weekday evening. The ambiance on Monday night was warm and relaxed. The sushi was the best I have ever had; and the recommendations given by the waitstaff {Poke & Spider Roll} were delicious! I also appreciated their almost constant refilling of my tea and water. A highly enjoyable experience! Pros: Sushi, Waitstaff, Ambiance Cons: Price, Parking, Hard Seats more

Fresh Sushi 2/6/2005

I was overwhelmed at how fresh the yellowtail and salmon sushi is at Ototo. I couldn't stop eating it because I didn't know when I would find good sushi here in Seattle again. I also ordered sushi rolls which are gigantic. Definitely three-bites per piece. Red and black decor is minimal, but effective. Service lagged a bit but I think it was just our server. Dessert (Chocolate Calzone) was absolutely decadent. Definitely for two people, at least. Prices are amazingly reasonable. Pros: Fresh sushi, Reasonable prices, Friendly chefs Cons: Trendy more

Fourth time's a Charm? 11/16/2004

Finally, after 4 times going to Ototo, we had price($$$ not $$) appropriate service. Every other time service has been pathetic! Comments about waiting 15 minutes for water or only seeing the staff 3 times were completely usual. Even when it was packed full or dead empty. For the 1st time in all 4 visits, the service made the price worthwhile. The Bento Box is enough to share with a small appetizer. The sushi was cold and enormous pieces, the sake was hot (for a while, then the un-glazed sake pitcher let out all the heat), the staff refilled my water and tea without my asking and re-asking. I was completely in shock; I wanted to go outside and verify I was really at Ototo. I don't know what happened, but there was a ""Waitstaff Wanted"" sign in the window. Maybe the management finally read all these reviews. Pros: Queen Anne, on bus route, ambiance/design Cons: , pricey, usually service more

I had better... 8/25/2004

Food there is good but was a bit disappointed at the service. Went there at night during a weekday, restaurant was not busy, but it took about 10 minutes to even get our water. After making a decision, meun was closed and still, took another 5 minutes for the waitress to come and take our order. No big deal, we can wait. But when she put my dinner down on the table she accidentally spilled some water. Table was all wet and she said she'll be back with towel. That didn't happen. I did enjoy our dinner though, but probably won't come back. Pros: Good food more

ruined a good day 7/14/2004

We went for my birthday last year. Made reservations. Were seated promptly, good so far. Then came the service. The manager was our server and totally neglected us. When we finally got our food half of it was wrong and dangerously so considering the alergy concerns at the table (yes, we told him about the alergies). Worse was that after hearing so much good stuff about this place that the fish was not very fresh. I have cooked in some of the best restaurants in this city and had this place recomended to me by numerous chefs in town. which make me think that maybe it was just an off day. Things happen and maybe it was just a fluke, I am still cautious in my decision to return. We spent a lot money there for people who work in the industry. I'm tired off being dissappointed by Seattle restaurants. Pros: atmosphere was fun, good sake, fairly priced Cons: , service more

Outstanding! 6/17/2004

This place is amazing...has pretty much all the major factors that make a restaurant into a legend. The sushi is fresh and cut with precision and traditional elegance, as opposed to the barbaric and monstrous cuts that are now gaining popularity. The presentation of the food is artistic, and somehow matches well with the minimalist approach to the decor. Speaking of the decor...it's fresh, simple, elegant and oh-so-clean. I've tried many of the menu items and have been impressed every time. The chocolate calzone dessert can bring a smile to any face! They also have a tremendous selection of sake. Overall, the food, service, cleanliness, and decor seem to all compliment each other to create a total package that far outweighs the sum of its parts. I would expect a place like this to be expensive, but the pricing is actually very reasonable given the quality. Pros: food, ambience, clean Cons: , parking more

it's refreshing 6/6/2004

Setting is very interesting. Menu is unique, staff is friendly and price is very reasonable. Food taste is traditionally while style is quite contemporary. My favorite dish is their agedagi tofu. I love the mixed mushrooms in the sauce. It is good choice for vegetarian, too. Pros: good food, reasonable price, friendly service more

Excellent!! 2/3/2004

I have eaten at Ototo on many occasions and every one has been stellar. The food has always been incredibly fresh and delicious and the service wonderful. The sushi chefs are very friendly and know their stuff! I DEFINITELY recommend this restaurant! Pros: Food, Service, Ambience more

Innovative 1/18/2004

The decor was a nice change to the typical traditional decor that you see in a sushi restaurant. The red was nice and although it was very minimalistic and modern in decor, it created a nice backdrop to the food. All in all, the environment was inviting and comfortable. The tuna tatake salad is delicious (the dressing is mouth-watering), as was the cod marinated in miso...it just melted in your mouth, and we ordered a caterpillar roll and some other ones. The fish was very fresh. And the server was very attentive. Would recommend this for a dinner date or with a friend. Pros: beautiful decor Cons: sound resonates more

blah 12/17/2003

Every time I notice that Ototo Sushi is at the top of the City Search list, I cringe, because I feel that the restaurant is over-rated. The sushi is average, and the service was mediocre. I've been there twice, and the second time I went, the owner of the restaurant was pacing up and down near the back of the restaurant with a scowl on his face, and made it difficult for my husband and I to enjoy our meal. We vowed we would never go there again, since there are plenty of other sushi restaurants in Seattle that are of much higher quality. Pros: clean, good location more

Cool place! 11/24/2003

Great sushi, fun decor, and wonderful service. I have only been there twice for lunch, but they remembered me the second time I came and welcomed me back. Pros: food, decor, service more

No ""oh-no, bad sushi"" at Ototo 10/9/2003

By happenstance my girlfriend found Ototo on Upper Queen Anne. While all the decent sushi was being consumed in Belltown, we had a fantastic time on ""the hill"". Our Chef was welcoming to the slightly ""girly"" threesome that was seatted at his sushi bar. He made wonderful recommendations to substitute for what was ""86'd"" for the evening and obligingly joined us for a sake toast, without drinking. What more could three ""slightly"" snobby sushi lovers want? To keep Ototo to ourselves. Pros: Off the beaten path, Excellent menu, Accommidating Cons: pass up parking-Walk! more

O-Toro NO 8/18/2003

I ordered a small portion O-Toro sashimi just for sampling. However, the quality of the ""O-toro"" really didn't match up to its name. It was the lower grade type of toro. (2 thin pieces costed $9) I also ordered hot sake. It came in a fancy container but it was very fast to cool. Therefore, drinking lukewarm sake really made the experience worse. The dessert, Chocolate Calzone, gave me a positive light in that restaurant. Nonetheless, be sure to order that ahead of time. more

I had better sushi 8/16/2003

Not the best sushi; but good enough to take friends... Good service, good selection of Sake, expensive though! Also try Tuna House in Bellevue, you'll be pleased with the sushi! more

Great food, slow service 8/6/2003

As a homeowner walking distance to this new Sushi restaurant, I was so pleased to see a new addition to the growing food scene at our Queen Anne hilltop. The look of the place was fashion forward, I was even excited about the quality of the food. After three disappointing experiences with waitstaff, we tried one more time......15 minutes for a final dessert with only six or so tables full. This was a the green tea tiramisu, (sounded interesting) that needed to be cut. We are heading across the street back to Chinoise, thank you. Pros: Not crowded, good food, decor Cons: slow service, slow service, slow service more

Mostly flash, little substance. 4/7/2003

Ototo looks great. Their sake is wonderful. Prices are almost reasonable. The staff is nice (if a little under-attentive). However, if you're looking for great sushi, Ototo just doesn't come through. Their ""salad"" is uninspired and under-washed. I found the sushi to be average in quality, though their selection is wide. But my main concern with Ototo is it's cleanliness since I came down with food poisioning after eating there (and I had all vegetarian rolls!). No one else in my party got it (there were 10 of us), but no one else ate a couple of the rolls that I did. Pros: Sake selection, affordable, great interior Cons: cleanliness more

Visiting Ototo 3/7/2003

Visiting Ototo was a different experience for me. After moving from California, I wanted to find a sushi joint that not only provided great food but atmosphere also. I had tried many other restaurants, but nothing beats Ototo. Even though it has been open for a year, I seem to believe that Ototo will become a stable sushi joint in near future. Tempura dinner and monkfish is superior with freshness in everybite. The sushi seemed fresh caught with beautiful presentation in detail. Also, wait-staff were kind enough to tell me what the specials were. Overall, I recommend this place. I know they have some things to work on like the speediness of the food and such but those are fixable things. This is a new restaurant. It is best to watch and see because not all restaurants become successful at what they are doing in matter of a year. Pros: Moderately priced, Friendly Staff, Fresh Food Cons: Not for Children, Lack of Space, Loud more
