Best

Since 1919, the sign says. Hollywood's oldest restaurant, outlasting the other greats like the Derby and Chasens, Musso and Frank hasn't changed much in the last 93 years - except...

Tear this place down with the cooks and the servers 12/15/2007

Worst food and service very, two cups of soups and two sandwichs for $40.00 and was so bad only could eat two or three bits, the servicer could care less about our meal very rude. Pros: great ambience if you like old stuff Cons: very poor service more

EXPENSIVE dinner in Hollywood History 7/28/2007

Sure, it's been here since 1919, but in a way, so has the menu. It wouldnt hurt the chef to add more salt to the chicken a la king, or dare even make his fries a little thinner so that they fit into your mouth. The prices are HIGH. Almost Tourist Trappy. Every meal on the menu is at least $20 or over. The tap water needs to be filtered properly. And the menu needs to be easier to read and they might want to decide what direction they are going for. Oldskool American Cooking? Why the cheese plates and the random deli sandwiches. Hmm... worth it maybe to stop by for a drink, but given the SHADY characters that walk around outside on Hollywood Blvd, not really a must try. There are better and more interesting historical places to eat in Hollywood. Pros: Atmosphere, Historical Spot Cons: Food, Exhorbant Prices - not value for money more

Classic 4/2/2007

I highly recommend this place for anyone who really loves old Hollywood as far as ambiance and old American fare. The menu is mostly ala carte, which I love. I like being able to pick what meat I want, what salad I want, what vegetable I want etc... Getting a fancy plated cutting edge meal is great too but I really LOVE it this way so much more! Must be my Kansas City up-bringing. The dishes are the kind of dishes you would expect to see on a menu from the 1930's or 1940's on the east coast. You will be getting excellent cuts of meat, grilled perfectly, AMAZING cocktails, old school waiters, and side dishes you haven't seen on a menu in years. Seriously, when was the last time you saw a twice baked potato on a menu? The ambiance is so old American, like someplace you would see in a movie starring John Garfield or something. It is like old world New York. You have to see it. I miss places like this. Restaurants these days can be so cold and barren and minimal. I know that is the ""chic"" style for these days but I am over it. Gimme Musso's! Pros: Food, ambiance Cons: kind of pricey but not out of the ordinary more

Top-notch food if you order judiciously 1/30/2007

Best dishes are lamb chops, and steaks such as tenderloin. Yum yum yum. Sandabs are good if you want to eat more lightly. The prime rib is huge, so you'd want to share if you get it. Ask for twice-baked potato instead of regular baked potato. Creamed spinach is good. I've heard the potatoes lyonnaise are delicious, but haven't had a chance to try them yet. A friend loves the Diplomat pudding, which I haven't had but it sounds like trifle. The meats have that wonderful almost-charred taste on the outside, but tender and juicy inside. There's plenty of room if you get there at 6pm, but don't come at 5:30 or you will have to wait to order. (Except for martinis etc at the bar.) more

Ignore the whiners, go if you want old style Hollywood 10/3/2006

Anyone who goes to Musso and Frank and orders ""the vegetable plate"" or ""spaghetti"" deserves whatever they get for being so clueless. \r \r Musso is for steaks and cocktails, and they do great with both. (Their drinks are STRONG, be forewarned) Forget the sides and don't try to be experimental with the menu. \r \r Still the BEST place in LA for spotting celebrities. Pros: Steaks, Cocktails Cons: The place IS getting a little threadbare, sides are weak more

Old atmosphere, modern prices! 9/30/2006

I eat out a lot and am usually pretty generous in my ratings, but this place was so-so. I arrived and the place had a nice crowd, but not super busy. Yet two workers were busy counting money and sorting receipts for at least 5 minutes before someone else finally seated me. I got a plate of spaghetti with brown meat sauce for 16.00. The spaghetti factory down the road had better pasta, with a salad, drink, and spamoni for almost half the price and it tasted better. I'm used to paying 27+ for steaks and chops, but the pastas and side dishes were very overpriced for average food. What drew me here was the fact that it was the odlest restaurant in Hollywood with a lot of history. For that I am glad I saw it, but once is enough. The crowd was diverse, at the bar was 2 young men, one inshorts and a dodgers jersey, talking to an older man in a suit and tie and his wife. On a plus note, the bartenders don't shy away with alcohol in martinis and mixed drinks. Pros: strong drinks Cons: high prices for average food more

Worst Dining Experience...EVER 12/19/2005

The menu is extensive, but they had run out of the first 3 things we ordered. I ended up with the ""vegetable plate,"" a sampling of available sides. I dont mind paying more for quality food, but they had the audacity to charge $12 for a small plate of canned vegetables. I couldnt believe this food, all tasteless mush. My boyfriend had a plate of spaghetti, also tasteless mush. For $16 he received the smallest plate of spaghetti I have seen, with no garlic bread or sides. The entire staff was incredibly rude. At first we thought it might all be a joke, like Ed Debevic's in Chicago. It's that ridiculous, but they are serious. I imagine this restaurant is a hangout for the very rich, and the poor food and service keep the normal people out. We found nothing worthwhile, yet it was packed full of socialites. Pros: Open Late Cons: Over-priced, Tasteless, mushy food, Rude Staff more

Overpriced food for what used to be a nice place 10/4/2005

A friend and I were not impressed with the food or the atmosphere. It was obviously pretty once, but now just looks dilapitated. The food was overpriced. Expensive food is fine, if it's worth it - and the food at Musso & Frank is NOT worth it. The martini was just okay - I've had them equally good at better places. more

It's a Classic Best Martini Ever 9/7/2005

If you like Hollywood this is it. The Bartenders are real barkeeps and know how to pour. None of the trendy fly by night restaurants. The place has been there over 80 years and there is a reason for it. Pros: Drinks, Food, Ambiance more

Lackluster Dinosaur 11/29/2004

Once one of my favorites, now just a shell of itself. I like old school but this place is in serious need of renovation. Waiters are arrogant for no reason. They aren't good enough to pull it off. High prices for mediocre food. Steaks are disappointing. Pros: not crowded Cons: , run down, poor service more

go for steaks 3/25/2004

Why else would you go to a steakhouse? The steaks are excellent and the ambience is very old school..two celebrity sightings while there. Do not forget the dessert..Cheesecake and bread pudding are delicious. Prices are pretty normal, I think, for and LA steakhouse. Pros: steak, creamed spinach, dessert more

A real classic 3/6/2004

Great steaks & chops. I don't know how the grill cook can remember all the orders called in to him but he does. We love the jacketed waiters. Everything about this place is like dining in a time warp. Everyone should dine here at least once. Pros: Mesquite steaks, atmosphere Cons: , closed sun & mon more

Lots Of Money For So-So Food 7/28/2003

This place must survive on nostalgia alone; I wasn't impressed. I was there for a business lunch; the prices are extremely inflated for what you get. The food was so-so as was the service. I won't be back. Pros: Nostalgic, On Hollywood Blvd. Cons: The Food more

Great Steaks! 7/24/2003

Been there 3 times with girlfriend, each time we both ordered steak, perfect steak each time! We've were dressed different each time and have noticed they prefer people to be better dressed, but fortunately my girlfriend is extremely beautiful, so I'm sure that helped them overlook what we were wearing... Pros: Great Steaks, Good Parking Cons: Expensive, Wait Time, Snobish more

big disappointment 12/23/2002

the food at this place is really boring and expensive. everything is al carte and not very good. norms is better. the best thing at this place is the martinis. i was really disappointed. taylors in korea town is much better if you want to experience la history. Pros: ambience Cons: expensive more

snobby place 12/14/2002

If you are not ""properly attired"" don't even try to get a seat. The cashier looked us over with a sniff and asked if we had reservations, when told no, although the place was half empty and no one waiting we were told to come back at 7:30-2 1/2 hours later. I got the distinct impression that my husband's biker look-- long hair and beard and my daughter's teenage attire did not meet with his approval. We had just come from seeing the Lion King, so we were not poorly dressed. Be forewarned! more

be sure to not go home hungry 9/12/2002

i was surprised how everything is still ala carte so if you don't order other dishes, you will be hungry. the food was very good but since we're not regulars, the crony waiters didn't give us much attention Pros: landmark, quality meat Cons: expensive, noisy, must be a crony more

Musso's a Must 8/26/2002

A great place to business lunch or treat yourself for a solo meal at the counter. No frills, just good food and service, excellent bar. Pros: reasonable prices, good parking, good service Cons: closed Sunday, noisy, ? more

an old favorite 8/24/2002

nothing like old waitors in red jackets to match the round booths. people have given me mixed reviews about the food, but i always order the gigantic fried oysters and am never disappointed. everyone should visit this restaurant at least once, though. if not for the food, then for its old hollywood feel. more

Oldest Restauran 6/26/2002

I love this place! You want to feel like your having a flashback from the 40's? This is the place! The food is very, very good! They have the best cosmos around! Want to have fun in style come here!! Pros: food, drinks, service Cons: nothing, nothing, nothing more

  • If ever there was an “Old Hollywood institution,” this is it. The best seats are at the counter by the street entrance, but if you can’t score one of those, definitely hunker down in the clubby...
