Ashley is the best, she gave me perfect highlights I.highly recommend her for color. very experienced.

Worst

I have been taking my child to this salon for several hair cuts over the past year or so, and let me tell you that I have never paid the same amount twice! He is under the age of...

Awful and overpriced 1/23/2010

I had gone to MCN a long time ago and saw Derrick. He no longer works there, thank god. I was the first person he had given highlights to and they were awful. So, as I continue to find someone who can cut hair, I looked at the recommendations and saw someone raved about Cheryl. I made my appointment. She's definitely hip, but cannot cut hair! I brought in pictures, explained what I want. In the end, she had to rewash all of the product out of my hair. She was trying to style my hair and it was a disaster. I walked out of the salon with a wet head because she just didn't know what to do with my hair. I didn't want to direct her in how to blow dry my hair. Very disappointing again. I will not be going back. Pros: nice atmosphere...looks trendy Cons: overpriced more

Finally got what I'd been looking for 1/5/2010

I visited MCN Salon on a recommendation from a trusted friend. I arrived a few minutes early, was given time to fill out a new client form and was then seen immediately. I was a new customer, requesting unusual color (I got subtle purple highlights in my hair) but Sara knew exactly what to do. I'd struggled with previous stylists to explain what I wanted in a cut-- I have very fine wavy hair-- but Sara understood and I really like my cut. I'm not shaggy! The color is fantastic. She was friendly-- everyone was-- and attentive to what I wanted. I will be a repeat customer and recommend MCN to my friends. Pros: professional, great atmosphere, attentive Cons: I haven't found any more

Cheryl is the best stylist EVER 5/12/2009

I am one of those people that goes six months without cutting their hair, and I recently realized it was a disaster and needed to get in ASAP for a trim before my best friend's wedding next month. I went back to Cheryl at MCN who had cut my hair in January and had done a fabulous job. This time I loved it even more! Cheryl listened to all my concerns and did exactly what I wanted -- kept the length but gave it a little edge. Even the owner Jim told her what a great job she did on me! Besides being an awesome stylist, she's also really easy to talk to and fun to be around... and HER hair rocks, too! CHERYL and MCN will not disappoint you! Pros: Great stylists, high end cuts for a reasonable price Cons: None at all more

An Experience 3/3/2009

Nicolette has been styling my hair every five weeks for years. She and this salon are amazing. Going here is an experience - pure entertainment. The salon is gorgeous, the owners are so kind, and the staff is incredibly well trained and hilarious. They make everyone feel right at home. One warning: This salon is NOT for anyone who wants the average hair-do. It is expensive, but you get what you pay for. I am always in shock whenever people don't want to spend big bucks on their hair. After all, you have to wear your hair everyday. Why wouldn't you spend top dollar for a superior style?! So, if you want a perm (Who still gets perms?), save yourself the trip to MCN and go to your neighborhood "beauty shop" instead. But, if you want a rockin' do, make an appointment with any staff member at MCN. And, don't forget to pet Josie - the owners' bulldog. She's a sweetie. Pros: Top stylists, atmosphere, gracious owners, parking more

Disaster! 2/18/2009

This salon was all show. It's really unfortunate because I thought I had finally found a good place in Pittsburgh. I am not one for places like this (very trendy and ultra modern), but I am one for a good highlight and haircut, so I gave it a try. Because they have this ridiculous system of junior, mid level and senior stylists, I had to go with the junior because the haircuts are incredibly overpriced. The other issue with this is this: because I cannot afford the highest priced haircut, I ended up with the worst haircut of my life. I kind of think that if you are going to hire someone, it should be because they do an excellent job. I should have just as good a haircut with a junior stylist as anyone, especially for a salon like this. So, I ended up with a semi-mullet that had to be completely chopped off. I was growing my hair out and had no idea what the stylist was doing. And it was butchered. The owners swooped in and tried to fix the disaster, but it was already ruined. One of the owners even talked to me afterward and tried to explain that my haircut was in part because I had chosen a junior stylist and I should get my hair cut by him or one of the more experienced stylists. The owner shouldn't be telling me that it's my fault because they have a bad stylist on staff. He even alluded to this not being the first time this had happened with her. I later went to my old stylist in my hometown to have my hair fixed and he informed me that my hair was an inch longer on one side and was uneven in the back. He said it was clear the owners had textured it to death in attempt to cover up how bad it was instead of owning up to what had happened and taking responsibility. So, I am not recommending this salon - not just because of my disaster haircut, but because of the poor management and lack of responsibility when something bad does happen. I felt that this was just so unfortunate, I wanted to let people know so they wouldn't end up like me. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Poor management, service more

FANTASTIC Haircuts! 11/24/2008

I love my hair. I love the atmosphere. I love the time my stylist takes on my hair. I've only had my hair cut there, but they are the BEST cuts I have ever had. I do find them pricey. I would go back more often, but I can't afford it. I go only twice a year because of this. Today my bill was $14 more than it was the last time for the same exact thing. My stylist may have been promoted. I didn't ask. She is great though. I will go back. Pros: Cut, stylist, location, etc. Cons: PRICE more

Great salon & Nicolette rocks! 9/30/2008

Having just moved back to the area from NYC, I was really worried about finding someone to maintain the asymmetrical cuts I've been getting (and LOVING) for the past four years as a hair model. I scheduled a cut and color consultation with Nicolette, and I could tell immediately that she knew what was up. Even though I hadn't scheduled an appointment for the actual service, she was kind enough to fit me in for a cut on the spot. She did an amazing job, she listened to what I wanted, and she even threw in some tricks of her own to slice up probs my favorite cut I've had in quite some time. She really understood the texture of my hair and worked with it instead of against it. She's also completely precious and personable without being over the top. There was also no product pushing (I actually asked for a recommendation!), and the total for the cut and products was about $100 with tip. Some people might find that pricey, but it's worth it for a cut you love! See Nicolette... you will not be disappointed. :) Pros: Nicolette's skills, atmosphere, Jim (the owner) is a sweetie, cutting edge. Cons: Be ready to shell out the $ for a job well done. (Not really a con for me, but may be for some.) more

Highly recommended only if seeing Nicolette 8/14/2008

I have been going to MCN for the past six years and have had nothing but excellent service. The front desk staff, while it rotates frequently, has always been extremely courteous, friendly and flexible in getting me an appointment whenever I needed one. The owners are admittedly an odd couple: one is an ice queen and the other is touchy-feely on a Michael Jackson kind of level. However, regardless of whatever else goes on in the salon, Nicolette goes beyond making up for it. She has worked with me on tons of different styles, from short to long and everything in between. Her cutting skills are inimitable and her color work will leave anyone speechless. She's also one of the sweetest people you will ever meet and will take care of you no matter what. I once felt like jumping ship because I was unhappy (I was a fat pig at the time and blamed Nic on me looking like a dirtball, not my three stomach rolls), and went to another salon and got screwed. I called and was in to see Nic within 24 hours and she worked her magic, charging me reasonably unlike other places which would rob you on "restoration" work. All in all, Nic is hands down the best stylist in Pittsburgh and deserves all the merit she has earned. If I could fly back to Pittsburgh every 4-6 weeks, I totally would. :( Pros: location, prices, hip ambience, Nicolette, cute bulldog Cons: you might get groped?, ditzy shampoo girls more

great customer service but can sometimes get a little snoody... 7/20/2008

Great salon but watch out who you get. I was going to Derek and recomended my friends to him and everyone was thrilled!!! Where did he go???? When he left we went with a girl whom I would have thought was equally as good as the price was the same as his??? I personally could not be UNhappier and more wrong. I don't know what she is doing but none of my friends nor I were the least bit satisfied. Maybe try a little higher price range and you will get better skills. Overall nice place but can be pushy. Pros: cool place Cons: parking and can be pushy more

always had a great experience with mcn salon 3/29/2008

i've been going to mcn for about a year now and i always seem lucky enough to get kara to cut my hair. she's very easy going and cuts your hair exactly the way you ask. now i just go for a haircut but i've referred a few friends her way and they tell me she's great at coloring hair as well. jim, one of the owners, is a good guy too. he'll always take time out to sit and chat while i'm waiting for kara and he really has a way of creating a fun, positive environment in the salon. my haircut's usually run around $25 but other people tell me that they're a little pricey. now some people could view that as a downfall but i was once told that you should always spend a little extra money on shoes and your haircut. i say this because you'll wear those two things every day and if you're like me you want to make sure you're always looking your best , so it's ok to spend that litte extra money especially if it's worth it and believe me mcn is Pros: staff (especially kara & jim), environment & josie (she's the bulldog) Cons: parking more

Please don't keep me waiting... 3/26/2007

I waited for TWO HOURS for my appointment. That is, I waited for an two hours in their waiting area before anyone even talked to me after I checked in for my appointment, and I was RIGHT on time. When I was finally taken, there was no mention of the HUGE delay and no apology. I felt super shafted. What really gets me is that while I was waiting there, twiddling my thumbs, the stylist my appointment was with (Lisa, the female owner) didn't seem to be doing anything. She kept walking out of the room and coming back, she wasn't with a client, and there were about five other people standing around who could have at least gotten me started. The whole thing took 5 hours! For a simple haircut. Insane. My boyfriend who was supposed to pick me up was MAD! It ruined our plans for the whole day. The cut was good, not amazing. And I ended up getting talked into an additional $80 of Bumble and Bumble product. Anyway, I am not going back. No matter how cool and trendy the atmosphere is and how cute their dog is, I want to be treated nicely by my stylists and I just can't afford the HUGE time sink. Sorry guys. Pros: Great atmosphere, ambience Cons: Unprofessional attitude and behavior, huge delays, don't give you the cut you want more

Time consuming but worth it 3/11/2007

I have been going to Sara for two years. She is the most affordable one there (junior stylist or something?) and I LOVE what she does with my hair. The color always looks AMAZING - she brightens it but keeps it natural looking. My only complaint is that it takes sooo long (4 hours for a cut and highlight) but afterwords I always feel like a rock star. She is a great value. I highly recommend her. Pros: Sara, highlights Cons: time consuming more

3 Great Assistants 3/4/2007

MCN is a great Salon. I was reccommended to go there and was worried it was too "high end" for me. I was proven dead wrong. Jim was fantastic at cutting my hair and being a mentor to the assistants around him. It felt like he was teaching while cutting my hair and it made me view him as an expert. The group the salon surrounds themselves with are excellent and very friendly. I got to meet 3 very nice assistants named Jennifer, Derrick and the extremely personable Kara. She lightened the whole place up with her jokes and cheerful personality! I dont think the price was out of line either. Good place and I would highly reccommend. This is a place that is really great for business people/young professionals, becasue you are treated great the moment you walk in and they do a professional job on your hair. and are up to date on the latest styles. Pros: The 3 Assistants, expert knowledge, cool atmosphere Cons: Parking more

Great cuts and color 12/4/2006

My wife and I have gone here for several years. They do a great job with my hair, as well as hers. The staff are friendly and professional. Pros: Quality, staff Cons: Parking more

Almost got it right... 9/26/2006

I have gone to McN for about 6 months, each time leaving saying...love the color, hate the cut. It is difficult for me to voice disappointment, but I have decided, after having 4 haircuts that were exactly what I didn't ask for, to go somewhere else. They seem to really like layering/razoring people's hair. If you want a blunt cut, you have to strongly say, no layers, no razoring not nothing. Say if it isn't blunt you won't come back again. if you don't.... you'll get layers. It is a shame since their color is fantastic. I would also give them time limits that they would pass by without a blink of the eye. I was about an hour late for work once. Hmm, I don't really know why I stayed so long. Nahh... it was the color. I'd say give it a try if you aren't on a budget. Pros: Great products, excellent color, fun atmosphere Cons: Parking, stylists don't follow directions more

Over priced but, great job 9/21/2006

It was only suppose to take 4 hours for my color correction but it was 6. Everyone was really friendly and even after the extra two hours, the correction was done extremly well. im satified with the results except for the price which was 100 dollars more then what I expected to pay. Over all it was a great job but too pricey. Maybe if someone bought me a gift certifiacte to go back I would. Pros: Highly skilled stylist, atmosphere Cons: Price and wait more

MCN is HORRIBLE! 9/11/2006

I went in for a basic haircut and was excited to try a new place. When I got there, I loved the funky atmosphere and thought the setup was great. One of the owners, Lisa, was doing my cut, so I felt like I would be in good hands since it was an owner... WRONG! She sat and listened to me and it seemed like she was paying attention to me. I had told her NOT to use the edge of the scissors like a razor on my hair because I do not like the way my hair is a week later when it starts growing in. What does she do... uses the edge of the scissors and then proceeds to tell me that it is the hairstylist that is using the tool worng and that is why I don't like my hair afterwards. Well, I guess she is using them wrong because this is the worst haircut I ever had in my life!!! I cried for three straight days and I am not a crier! I usually brush a bad cut off because hair grows back, but this was so bad!!! She put layers in and they were uneven in the back by 2 inches! My husband told me to go back, but there is no way I would want them to try to fix the horrid job they did. It sounds like the only people with good experiences had Nicolette as their stylist. Pros: nice atmosphere Cons: bad stylist, way overpriced more

I really like this salon 9/4/2006

I've been going to Nicolette for a few years now, and my cut and colors are always top of the line. She is very personable, and even though I only get there once or twice a year, she always remembers me. The atmosphere is different, a lot more funky, then your typical Pittsburgh salon, so if you don't like different, then this salon is not for you. I don't mind the dog. I have observed only courtesies extended to customers, including new mothers who had to nurse their child during a cut/color job. If you don't like different and the fact that a dog is hanging out, there are other places to go. I've been very happy. Pros: Hours and location are convenient to downtown setting Cons: There for a long time, even for a simple cut more

Always Had a Good Experience 8/1/2006

I have been going to this salon for the last two years and have always had Nicolette perform my highlights and cuts. She is a senior stylist and listens to what I want done and gives me the greatest color and cut I've ever had. Everyone that I've sent to her loves their cuts as well. They recently expanded their salon to include nail & waxing services (which I haven't tried yet). I've never run into a problem with their tame Eng. Bulldog and have always felt very welcomed each and every visit. Pros: Good atmosphere, offer a variety of products. Cons: Have to park in lot across Smallman; closed on Mondays. more

one of pgh's worst salons 7/18/2006

My wife went here for a simple wash, cut and perm... her usual. Unfortunately for us both her former stylist moved to DC to do hair, so she thought she would give MCN a try. She came home in tears. I told her to go back but she said she would never set foot in that "God forsaken place," again, because not only did they cut her hair way too short but since the perm, her hair has started falling out because the perm was left in too long. When she questioned one of the owners about where the stylist was because she thought the perm needed washed out, the owner just petted her bulldog (so unprofessional to have a dog in the salon... not to mention unsanitary!) and trivialized it. This place should lose their license. Extradorinarily unprofessional and rude. The owners are jerks and will not take responsibility for their stylists or the mistakes they make. Go here at your own risk because if you have a problem you are on your own... SOL! Pros: good location Cons: Owners are rude and don't have sense of the term, "customer service" more
