Great salumeria 6/12/2007

Lupa was great. The food was great, the wine was great. Especially impressive was the menu of cured meats made in the restaurants. The only bad thing was that we had a reservation for 8:30 on a Tuesday and we didn't get seated until 9:00. There really was no place to sit or stand at the bar, so we had to wait in a small hallway while trying not to spill our carafe of wine. Pros: coppa cotta Cons: the wait, even with reservations more

batali KNOWS his pasta 4/22/2007

my biggest recommendation regarding lupa - go on tuesday for crispy duck night. the duck agro dulce is amazing. and def start with a pasta of any sort. a month ago they had an amazing oriechette with swiss chard and sausage on the menu. the pasta carbonara is always tasty. Pros: fantastic pasta Cons: go early more

Quite good if you order the right thing! 2/26/2007

The waits are annoying - my advice is to try and sit at the bar - generally a shorter wait. i went on a Sunday and the bar staff was quite knowledgeable about the menu and happy to answer questions. My date got lamb chops, which were some of the best I've ever had (definitely in NYC). I got the duck ragu and we shared a plate of the appetizer meats whcih were all absolutely deliscious! Pros: knowledgeable staff, good food quality Cons: long wait, slightly pricey more

dont believe the hype 2/17/2007

i had been dying to check out lupa for months and finally went early about 6pm to get a table. Pros: nice staff Cons: food not worth the hype more

a little taste of italy 2/8/2007

it's hard to find real panini and pasta like you get all over italy. lupa gave me a little taste of my time there. while it's not like the real thing because no new york place can really have the relaxed quality of a meal in milan, i loved it just the same. the seats are a little close and the reservation thing was quite annoying, but the service and the food were as i had hoped. worth the effort! Pros: tasting options are great and excellent reasonably-priced wine list more

Is Celebrity Worth It? Red Sauce vs. Real Italian 12/20/2006

The first problem is any Italian restuarant - because there are two distinct types: Italian American red sauce and true Italian. ( watch the film ""Big night""). If you like the former, you'll like Lupa, if the latter, you may prefer elsewhere. Pros: Nice service Cons: Italian American heavy, oregano red sauce - Pretentious - contrived reservations more

Not as great as I had hoped 12/19/2006

This was the one restatuant I really wanted to eat at and I was a little dissapointed. We made reservations 2 wks in advance and could only get a 5 o' clock Sunday reservation. Seating was tight, whole place was tight, but cute. Nice waitress, very helpful. Great bread. Whole menu in italian. I was prepared for bold flavor combinations, but some of these were just weird, and not what I wanted. Had anchovies and fennel and wasn't crazy about it. Then Saltimbuca and fish. Both were good, neither amazing. Panna Cotta for dessert. Good, but not great. Good wine. OK price. Not what I had hoped. more

Still Amazing 11/20/2006

I've been coming here since it opened and am still surprised by the quality of food and wine that are offered and the comparatively low bill that I wind up with. The crowds haven't stopped coming, so make a reservation or plan on waiting at one of the nearby bars for an hour or two. Dinner is so worth it. Pros: Fantastic food, great service, great prices Cons: Not enough room at the bar more

Great Food! 11/15/2006

I couldn't get a reservation for a Wednesday night when I called on a Monday for two people however we decided to go anyways and attempt to wait. We got there at 7pm it was rainy we figured it would be empty but it was packed. We were told it would be a 45 minute wait and it was exactly that. We ended up being seated at the best two person table in the place. The menu was different and interesting, the food was incredible especially for the price. I would 100% recommend trying Lupa, even if you have to wait. Pros: Food, Atmosphere Cons: Reservations more

Noisy and drafty. 11/11/2006

Too noisy. Dessert was a debacle. I was the only one at the table who ordered dessert. Two of our dinner companions were celebrating a wedding anniversary. Dessert was brought to the table w/ a candle in it & presented to my companions-who blew out the candles & ate the dessert. I asked for the dessert I had ordered & was told by server that my dessert had been delivered. I told the server I had not received my dessert and she apologized and said she presumed it was for the table, so she brought it for the special occasion with a candle. I told the server that that was not right, that I was the only one who ordered dessert, and that I was not served dessert. She understood, and went to the back to inquire of the manager, and she came back & said that the policy of the restaurant was not to serve FREE DESSERT! So it seemed they not only did not deliver my dessert, but intended to charge for the one brought with a candle to two persons who did not order dessert. Then the manager/maitre d' came over to the table & asked if there was a problem. I told him what happened and he said if I would like to order an additional dessert I could but I would have to pay for an extra dessert! Made me feel like a beggar or a cheat, when it was certainly not my error. By the way, the dessert was on the bill! Lousy customer management. Pros: appetizers fun and good Cons: hard to park, noisy, people at bar on top of the tables, main dishes one dimensional more

Pasta of the Godz 11/6/2006

Really, you can't get a better affordable Italian meal anywhere. You can easily make it out for under $30 per, the wine list is superb, the pasta is untouchable, and the cured meats are unbelievable. more

a new favorite 10/24/2006

We went to Lupa for the first time earlier this year, and we just keep going back. We crave the perfectly cooked pastas with rustic yet sublime sauces. A plate of pasta and glass of wine won't break the bank, but leaves me more than satisfied. The entrees look great, too, but I haven't ordered one yet - too addicted to the pasta. The atmo is convivial - it does feel Roman. We've never actually made a reservation. They are hard to get. But if you have time, you can go around 6 or 7, put your name in, and wander around SoHo for a bit. We've never had to wait more than 45 minutes. The tartufo is great for dessert, if you have room. Better than the one I had in Rome! Pros: service is great: hosts, waiters and bus staff. ambience warm and inviting Cons: tough to get reservations, long waits without one more

Incredible food and friendly staff... 10/4/2006

My fiance and I went for our anniversary on a Monday night. We were only able to get a 6pm reservation on short notice but we gladly took the ""early bird"" spot. We were promptly seated in the romantic and dimly lit back room. The tables are set a bit cozy so don't expect to have a very personal conversation but the upside is... you can mingle with other patrons and spy on their menu choices before making your own. Pros: delicious food, friendly staff, inexpensive but great tasting wines Cons: location is far from the train more

Real Italian Food 8/25/2006

Went to Lupa on a weeknight and had to wait a while for a table, but had some wine at the bar. Once you get a table the staff takes great care of you. I've been to Italy many times so I am familar with the cuisine, but the waiter was helpful with the slightly criptic menu, and made some good recommendations. If you don't know what to get, just ask and let the staff help you put a meal together. We started with great veggies and an amazing order of cured meats that they make in house. The pasta was the best that I've had outside out of Italy, cooked perfect, al dente! The pork chop that followed was great, moist and the good kind of fatty. Desserts were simple but good. Have the staff pick a wine to match your food. We had a cheap bottle of white that was perfect with the food. All around a great time, and worth the wait. Pros: Great Food, Great Service Cons: The Wait, but worth it! more
