I grew up in New York city and I'll tell you this, you're not EVER going to find the type of deli that New York city has to offer anywhere except for NYC. It's not possible to dup...

Worst

I haven't been to Katz's for a while. I usually go there on my birthday as a place of choice, and when I'm in the mood for some kosher grub. Anyway, we had some company in town so...

Wow, Absolutely Ridiculous 4/15/2006

If you think paying $15.00 for a tea and a sandwich is worth the trip...then head over to Katz's deli. I ordered the Turkey ham & swiss sandwich. The swiss cheese went completely unnoticed due to the massive amount of meat. A 1/2 lb. of meat is ridiculous. I'm sorry but I don't want to eat a sandwich that is so overpowered by the meat that the meat is all you can taste. But don't let the promise of 1/2 lb. of meat fool you, the sandwich is still small. And fries? Extra. For those of you who are watching your weight a side salad is $4.50. Yes that's right I paid $15.00 for a small mediocre tasting sanwich and a glass of tea. Yes that means the tea was $2.50. No, it wasn't special tea, it was regular tea. Absolutely ridiculous. Cons: Price, Quality more

Crunchy Coffee 3/4/2006

My mother and I use to go a lot, but over the years as the price went up the quality went down. We didn't always like seeing a new menu everytime, higher prices, and unexperienced wait staff finally my our time there stressful. I liked their breakfast plate, but they hardly ever have the bagel I want. The eggs are good and it was hit or miss on the potato pancake(no sour cream or applesauce). This is the last time will go because our first cup of expensive coffee in my mind was full of coffee grains. You could see them on the cup. Not a great way to start morning. Every refill (about 3) tasted different, too strong, not hot enough, etc. There are too many choices for breakfast now and we will take our business elsewhere. The Katz's in Houston was wonderful the last time I was there. Pros: Eggs, Parking Cons: Coffee, Bagel choice, Price more

Somethings missing 2/15/2006

It's been awhile since I have been to Katz's. I lived in Austin and frequented the place 3 times a week. I live in San Antonio now, and I when I went back I was very dissapointed. The food could have been better. The Rueben I remember was replaced with hard untasty bread and dried out corned beef. I wish I could say the service saved the day but I remember the service being so much more professional. Maybe I am just too picky but my wife doesn't like to be referred to as a ""guy"". She is not a guy. The music was so loud. I should be able to hold a conversation without yelling. All in all, it was dissapointing. I dont' see the quality I saw a few years back. I guess I'll have to make a trip to New York to get the Rueben I remember. Cons: quality of food more

Good food, but overpriced 1/5/2006

The food is awesome. The sandwich's come stacked with meat just like you would get in a New York deli. If you go to Katz's you simply MUST try the fried pickles, they are amazing. Only problems I have with this place is the prices. I believe they have gone up recently and I'm not too sure why. I guess it's worth it, but you could eat somewhere better and spend the same amount (not at 3 am though!). Their waiters know their stuff and are very friendly. Marc Katz is usually there and greets the customers. I do wish they would stop changing the menu so much and continue to use the chips/pickles/cole-slaw starter tray. Also, they stopped using their french fry seasoning which sucks because it gave their fries character and excellent flavor. Pros: Food, Free parking, Decor Cons: Menu changes often, Overpriced, loud sometimes more

A MUST GO EATERY 9/23/2005

Food is excellent. Service is very fast and friendly. If you're lucky enough to catch jolly ol' Mark Katz stopping by, you'll feel very welcome and connected to the establishment. Kosher pickles are the best. Try a side of ranch with some chips. I've had Reubens all over the country, and you would think that these folks invented it. I live in San Antonio, which is about an hour or so from Austin (which I visit frequently), and this is the only place that I make sure to go every time I'm in town. Pros: great food, fast, friendly service, new york feel Cons: little pricey more

Mmm pickles 7/9/2005

Went my first time yesterday for an early dinner. Got seated promptly but it took awhile for them to take our food orders. The pickles and chips starters were good (i like my chips extra-crispy, almost burnt). The mimosa was sadly the worst I've ever had. The bread on the philly was good but otherwise not recommended, the pot roast sandwich was wonderful with a cup of matzo soup, and while i liked the pastrami reuben, it was not awesome. Blueberry blintzes were tasty and the fifth avenue pie was huge and also good. We got away at $14/person, but only because one of our party did not indulge in an $8-10 entree. Would not call it cheap. Pros: pickles n chips, 24 hours, dessert Cons: price, mimosa, philly more

It's alright 8/28/2004

I went there the first time today and had this double decker sandwich type thing with turkey. The sandwich was all right, nothing spectacular or superior to any other sandwich I've had. My friend had the French Dip sandwich that looked pretty good. The waitress was somewhat nice if a bit scatter brained. There's young kids who eat here so if you don't mind kids screeching and listening to constant parental reprimanding, then this place is for you. Don't come here if you actually want to hold up a good conversation unless later in the night. My sandwich was far too salty. The meat was salty and the sauce was even worse. The bread is too thin and breaks up easily as a result of too much sauce. Pickles here are great though and saved the lunch. Pros: Pickles, Good Service Cons: , Very loud more

Good Food 7/18/2004

Its not New York Deli, but its tasty nonetheless. They sat us promptly and the service was quick. Each of us had the Reuben. I had the corned beef brisket, which was very good. The sandwich wasn't the size you'd see in New York, but still sizable. The sides are very lacking. Cole slaw came in what seemed like a metal thimble. We all wondered why they would even give us a side at all if the portion was going to be that small. On the other hand, the bucket of pickles was great and the extra side of fries for the table was good but half of the fries were under-cooked. Drinks were refilled quickly and frequently. The dinner, including the extra side and drinks, cost about $13/person. This was the one aspect of the experience that mimicked New York, considering we had sandwiches. Pros: Tasty Sandwiches, Fast Service, Prompt seating Cons: , Expensive more

Amazing Dessert 5/17/2004

They have the most amazing dessert here!!! It is called Strawberry Therapy and it is only $3.99 which is really good compaired to most prices at other restaurants. The dessert is just strawberries, hot fudge and real whip cream but it is incredible. You have to love all of those and being your average woman... of course I do. This place is great for late night food and really anytime of the day food. It is just a fun atmosphere. The waiters are great. They are extremely nice and very nice looking, or at least ours was. I went almost 3 years ago and I still remember our waiter Charlton, at least I think that was his name, and how cool he was with us. Anyway, I definitely recommend ths place to anyone who is ever in Austin. Enjoy!!! Pros: Inexpensive, Great Food, Even Better Desserts more

The incredible shrinking sandwich? 10/12/2003

The food is generally good, but recently, the portions have become smaller. Many might be perfectly happy with this, since they used to be huge, but it is noticeable and they haven't exactly reduced their prices accordingly. That said, the sandwiches and beef bacon are still yummy, and you might now actually have room for the amazing desserts. Pros: Atmosphere, good for groups, amazing desserts Cons: Not a great value, bad parking more

Katz's es muy bueno! 7/23/2003

I stopped in one Sunday afternoon on a whim and had a pastrami and swiss on rye, a bowl of french onion soup and a cold mug of Shiner Bock. The food was just great and the beer reall hit ths spot. So I took my kids in a while later and they loved it too. It quickly became one of our three favorite placed to eat in Austin. The other two are Shady Grove and Matt's El Rancho. The food at Katz's has always been consistently good to me and the prices are reasonalble for what you get. Great food, affordable prices - what more can I say? more

Big Businessman Breakfast 4/20/2003

The Big Businessman Breakfast is the only reason I have gone to Katz as many times as I have. It is true that it is over-priced and some people say the food isn't as fresh as it should be. However, the food has always been fresh for me. The prices of the artwork on the walls are even more outrageous than the prices of sandwiches. The best deal is the big businessman breakfast which is only offered in the mornings and I think on weekdays. Coffee, eggs, potato pancake, beef bacon. Very tasty and a good starter. Pros: Good breakfast Cons: Pricy more

""Not great food, but at least they're op 4/2/2003

""Katz's never kloses,"" which means that, if you've been partying on 6th Street and you want to get a bite to eat at 2 AM, it's about the only place you can go. But if it's earlier, and there's someplace else open, don't go to Katz's. The food just isn't very good. You'd think it would be impossible to mess up simple things like sandwiches or an egg cream (chocolate syrup and soda water), but Katz's manages to get even simple things wrong. Oh, don't get me wrong, nothing they serve is TERRIBLE- it's just mediocre. If it's late at night, and no place else is open, by all means, get a sandwich there. But don't go there if you have other options. There are numerous better places to get a sandwich. more

Not Like Opening Day 3/17/2003

The vanilla malt tasted like a chemical plant. The french fries were rubbery. The borscht was watered down. The reuben was made last week. The diet coke was wonderful. The waiter was attentive. Pros: hours, location Cons: FOOD, FOOD more

Lox it up 1/13/2003

Katz's is the place to be for good food and fun. The bloody mary's are the best I have ever had. The food is HUGE and wonderful. It rocks all hours of the day. Go see Judy at the bar and she will hook you up. Pros: Good food, Fast service, fun more

New York Comes to Austin 12/4/2002

I have been to Katz's several times and everytime I went I had a good experience. The people I went with also fell in love with it. The atmosphere is all about the Big Apple. It's also neat to get a window seat so you can see all the people going by. The food is great, especially if you like deli-style menus and food. Good burgers and excellent soup. the waitstaff has never been an issue either. always friendly and helpful. the best part? katz's never kloses! Pros: good parking, good food, good service Cons: crowded sometimes more

I really wanted to like it! 11/26/2002

It was an all around bad experience. Our waitress was barely hanging on. It took forever to get our drinks. By the time our food arrived (brought by another waitress) it had clearly been sitting somewhere for at least 10 minutes. The burger my friend ordered came with a potato thing (she hadn't ordered) that resembled a large chicken fried steak. The burger came with no cheese, which she had ordered. I had a cup of broccoli cheese soup that might as well have been custard, and an interesting take on a half sandwich. Bottom line: a great place to have coffee and a smoke at 3 am. That's about it. Pros: decent coffee, Mark Katz, inside smoking Cons: service, lukewarm food more

Katz, some good, some bad 11/19/2002

This deli is the only thing approaching good New York style food in Austin. Certain dishes are very good: pastrami rubin, potato salad, breakfast, shakes, the ""old"" fries, potato chips, the best pickles anywhere. If you stray away from Kosher, forget about it! The New England pot roast sucks and so do the wavy gravy sandwiches; the ""white"" bread is bad. They need to buy good Italian bread, not the soggy WASP-Germanic bread popular in this part of Texas. The staff is usually very friendly and nice to families. Katz is a character and also very charming. Basically, I love the place and take my kids all the time! I just wish they would rethink their ""New England"" stuff, add some garlic and pepper, and dump the lousy white bread! Pros: Kosher quality, service, price Cons: bad white bread, lousy New England mea, no garlic or pepper more

This place rocks 11/15/2002

I sware, there must be an addictive chemical in their food that makes me crave it. Parking is easy, the food is authentic NY deli style but without the attitude. The waiters are all nice and will engage you in conversation. I can't say enough great things about it. If you don't like it, then you don't know New York, and you need to go to McDonalds. more

What's all the Rave About? 9/19/2002

I was very disappointed with the food. I had ordered the french dip sandwich and the roast beef had mostly tendons/cartilage. I sent it back and ordered the rueben and the meat was a marbled with fat. I have had better food at Dennys and IHOP. Plus, they have very poor ventilation in the non-smoking section. What was funny about the whole experience was, the management came to our table and advised that our car is going to be towed, which parked in the free parking. Never again!!!!! Pros: Service Cons: No Parking, Food Quality, No none smoking secti more
