Upstairs is Better 10/24/2005

Good edaname and teryaki. The boy waiters seem more attentive. Pros: Patio, Service, Upstairs Cons: Parking, Prices, Entryway more

Very good sushi 7/18/2005

The last time I stayed in Chicago I gave this place a try and was very happy I did! Service was friendly and the atmosphere of the room was very inviting. And the Sushi & Sashimi combo entree cannot be beat! I look forward to going back. more

NOT GOOD 6/17/2005

This place is pretty aweful. The sushi is very low quality, the delivery service is plain terrible. I'd highly recommend going to some place you've never heard of then trying this place that's rumored to be great and in reality rides on nothing but reputation. more

not to tasty 5/17/2005

i would not come here again. place smells of fish when you walk in. not sure about the quality of the sushi. more

Becomes of the your favorite regular places 3/13/2005

Ok, Chicago has lots of great restaurants. We try a few ones here and there, but we end up going back to our 2-3 regular spots. Kamehachi is definitely one of them. We have a high comfort level going to place where people greet you by name, say hello and make you feel good. Oh yeah, the food is reasonable priced compared to other hot spots. Pros: Great Feel, Good Food, Nice Wine Selection Cons: Needs bigger space more

great food but 5/1/2004

We ate at the Streeterville location. The sushi, appetizers and teriyaki steak were outstanding. However, we had the worst service imaginable. The waitress was pleasant when present and the kitchen was the slowest of any restaurant I've been to in a long time. Pros: location, food, valet Cons: , service, service more

Please Avoid!!! 4/12/2004

This restaurant has it all! bad food, crappy service,un-informed waitstaff. I've had better sushi from the local grocery store. Avoid at all cost. I wish I did! more

Not so great 8/6/2003

I've eaten at most sushi places in the Chicago area, as well as many in Asia and other parts of the world. Kamehachi is OK sushi, but not great. The rice is not high quality sushi rice, the cuts of fish are not always the best, and the fish to rice ratio is heavy on the rice (i.e., not good ""Tokyo style"" sushi). The ambience and service are fine, however. The best sushi in the Chicago region is by far Sakuma's in Streamwood. Pros: ambience, service, fresh Cons: Poor sushi rice, skimpy fish more

Floating at the surface 2/17/2003

The only thing you will be happy with at this ""sushi"" restaurant is the ambiance. This was once a pretty good place to get sushi, but that was years ago. The pieces are now thin, tasteless, overpriced & unnervingly past their prime. We'll be frank: the sushi isn't worth the price. It isn't worth half the price. But you can have fun with it...place one across the bottom line of your bill - you can actually read the hideously inflated prices through the razor-thin nigiri! Seriously, go a quarter mile north on Clark to Green Tea (Webster & Clark). The ambiance isn't as hip, but the sushi is sublime. Pros: Open late, ambiance Cons: bad food, high prices, indifferent service more

There's More to Japanese Cuisine... 1/5/2003

It's difficult to find good sushi in Chicago for the main reason that we are inland, at least 2000 miles from any ocean. Kamehachi, however, produced very fresh sushi, and my favorite, unagi (saltwater eel), was delectable. However, there is a lot more to Japanese cuisine than Sushi. My order of shrimp tempura with Udon noodles was pretty horrible, and I ordered sushi afterwards only to counteract the slimy feeling in my mouth. What's funny is that it's usually the other way around with Chicago sushi restaurants: you order something less ""adventurous"" in order to get the taste of raw fish out of your mouth. All in all, there was too much emphasis on the ""trendiness"" of sushi and a lack of Japanese authenticity. Then again, I haven't been to a single Japanese restaurant in Chicago actually run by Japanese. I wonder if that has anything to do with it... Pros: Fresh Sushi, Decent Service Cons: Funky-tasting entreès, Bizzare-tasting tea more

Good Sushi 12/12/2002

This is probably the best sushi in the city for the price. There is a wide selection and they have some odd specials like the shots. It's hard to park so take a cab. The atmosphere is loud sometimes but there are quiet corners if you as for them. It's good for a date or for a group of people. Pros: Inexpensive, Wide Variety, Interesting specials Cons: No Parking more

Meets the Hype 11/8/2002

If you can get past the insane parking on a weekend night, and the often standing room only wait, check this place out. The fish has always been very fresh and the rolls offer some cool twists. The thing I like about Kamehachi is they dont' skimp on the cuts. When you order the Rainbow roll you get more than you can get into your mouth gracefully *lol* The tempura crunchies they add to some of the rolls make for interesting texture (in a good way) and the avocado on the Dragon Roll is always fresh and generous. A little pricey- but you expect that with sushi. The seaweed salad is good here for an appetizer. Make reservations, immediate seating is a pipe dream on a Fri/Sat night without one. Enjoy! Pros: Big Portions, Fresh Fish Cons: Parking, Long Waits more

not one chicago's best sushi restaurant 9/21/2002

at best, average food. wouldn't go back or recommend to anyone. came very highly recommended from family members who used to frequent the restaurant about 3 years ago. more

Completely Overrated 9/17/2002

After hearing and reading several glowing reviews, I decided to take my boyfriend here for his birthday dinner. I will gladly pay for good sushi and atmosphere, but we were sadly disappointed in that the food was mediocre. Then the bill came and then I REALLY regretted taking him here. We'll never go back; there's plenty of better sushi places in the city--both in quality and price. Cons: Quality, Price, Parking more

Delishus fishus 8/28/2002

I visited Kamehachi last week, and was pleased to enjoy wonderfully fresh fish (the sake especially was delicious and the tai was beautiful) and other high quality ingredients. Unfortunately, the presentation was awful. My sashimi plate was portioned generously, but consisted of sad little wads of fish in a nest of wet daikon. The maki were carelessly made, and the rice/ filling ratio leaned too heavily towards the rice. Decor was very nice, and service good though. Pros: Good atmosphere, Fresh fish, Good ingredients Cons: Poor presentation more

cute little place 8/26/2002

My wife loved the food. She is Asian. The Raw fish is her thing. We sat on the patio, it was a nice evening. Saw a show and had some Sushi, what a night. Pros: raw, fish, salmon more

Fresh Sushi 8/16/2002

Kamehachi has the freshest sushi in the city. It is conveniently located in Old Town and is welcoming all year round. Along with superb service, delivery is available as well. more

Oh, no... 8/15/2002

That was terrible food I've never had in my life. I'll never ever go back again. Not only sushi but also kitchen food was really unfresh. Even so, there was a great bartender who makes goody stuff. They need more effort for him and nice ambience. more

blandest food 8/15/2002

I've heard so much hype about this place, I finally went and was appalled. Sushi was warm, which should not be, and didn't taste great. Food was very bland, needed a lot of wasabi and soy sauce to remind me that i was actually eating food. I think what draws people in is the atmosphere and location. I'll stick with the better places from this survey. Cons: bland food, small menu selection, warm sushi, not good! more

Suits to what ever your mood is 8/15/2002

Greate place. Suits to what ever your mood is. Patio, Main/Bar or Contemporary. Open late is a plus. Great servings for the right price. Pros: Inexpensive, Ambiance, Has a bar Cons: Must call ahead more
