Clean and Gorgeous...Not to mention Unbelievable Services! 3/26/2008

I am also a true blue just calm down lover...There is no spa in all of NYC that has the excellent customer service and services as Just Calm Down does. First off, the space is sooo pretty and so comfy I loved it from first glance. It is also extremely clean. They even use big bowls for their pedis and not the regular sinks most places use. The rooms are also quite quaint and have lots of sweet character. Everyone I have ever brought here, has raved about the wonderful services and second to none customer service. If you do not want personalized attention, this is not your place. I love the special attention and endearing way of the front desk girls. It makes me feel like like a person and not a number. The waterbed moroccan massage is the best massage experience you will ever have. I agree with NY Mag that it is by far the best massage in the city. All I can say is go!go!go! Pros: Great Staff, Beautiful Ambience, Wonder Services Cons: none more

Fabulous Spa! 3/25/2008

I've been a loyal customer to just calm down for years. Don't believe these nasty reviews. It is a wonderful CLEAN place and one of the best spas in Manhattan. I think we have a disgruntled ex-employee on the loose who is addicted to citysearch and needs to find a new job other than writing bogus citysearch reviews about a spa that is absolutely wonderful- why else would New York Mag rate it as one of the best massages and pedicures in the city? I would never promote a business I didn't believe in and just calm down and its staff have been amazing to me and I consider them family. My advice is for people to go in and see for themselves. : ) Pros: Quality Treatments, Friendly Staff, CLEAN more

spa is filthy disgusting!!! 3/24/2008

this place is a filth monger!!! first i was looking for the bathroom and accidentally walked behind a curtain where the employess sit, there was garbage and animal traps all over!!! when i got into the bathroom there was water on the floor and oatmeal and food in the sink!!!! the toliet paper didnt flush the first time i had to flush twice .The girls who work there doing the services were all very nice and my massage therapist was off the hook, too bad the spa was disgusting-even the room i had my massage in smelled funky and the floor was sticky. i didnt really have a problem getting an appointment but the girl in the front was obnoxiously trying to get me to upgrade and add other services-when i agreed to upgrade my massage-i had to wait extra time so the therapist could set up-somthing with waterbeds not being ready, i then told the girl in the front to forget the upgrade bc i was on a schedule she said just 2 more minutes and kept calling me sweetie. it took an additional 20 minutes to set up and the therapist told me that this type of massage should be booked in advance in the future bc of the set up time, when i told my therapist that the girl in the front talked me into the upgrade my therapist seemed annoyed bc she had a full schedule. she was an amazing therapist and the massage was worth the extra money but not the extra time. i came about 10 minutes early so my total wait b4 the service was over 30 minutes, my massage was not cut short but her next client had to wait all that extra time too and the staff in the front didnt even seem to care...apparently my extra 20 dollars was worth more to them than the aggrevation it caused me and the next client.First i wish i wouldve went somewhere else because like i said the spa itself was GROSS!!!! but since i was there i wish i didnt really upgrade my massage even though it was a good one because it threw off my whole day, in ny you dont really have all the time in the world to wait for waterbeds Pros: good therapists Cons: filthy dirty and greedy. more

Love this place :) 3/24/2008

I went into just calm down spa on Saturday for the first time and I'm shocked to see the review below. My experience was nothing but great. I did a massage and then a pedicure and they were lovely. Everything seemed very clean and sanitary to me. The staff was lovely and the girl at the front desk was a doll. In the below review they said they hated being called "pet names" but I thought that shows the staff is friendly and treats you as a friend instead of just a client as they do at places like Bliss and such. (I hate being called Miss or Ms.! It makes me feel like an old lady! At least these girls don't!) I felt right at home and loved the realness of this place and lack of snooty "stuck-up" attitudes that other Manhattan venues tend to have. I will definitely be back! just calm down spa keep rockin and let the haters hate! Pros: friendly staff, unique atmosphere, fun fun fun! more

WORST, DIRTIEST Pedicure Ever 3/15/2008

First of all it took me a million years to get an appointment at just calm down; I'm assuming after reading some of the other poor reviews here it's because I had a gift certificate and it seems that just calm down has a poor history with accepting gift certificates as payment because maybe they're a cash poor business or just greedy, who knows? The redheaded receptionist was totally lame and tried to upsell me like crazy calling me stupid pet names like she knew me. She was ridiculous and embarassing. The owner should put her in a back of house job, working with the public isn't her strong suit. But I have to say when the pedicurist took me to supposedly glorious tent area I was SERIOUSLY disappointed with the decor, cleanliness and service itself. The girl was nice enough, but the area to pick colors was poorly lit and the drink that was supposed to come with the service I had to ask for three times. When I got my "lemonade" I'm serious, it was about 4 ounces of poorly mixed powdered lemonade in a filthy, old glass. Gross! The supposedly exotic and gorgeous tent is a filthy, dirty, stained, dilapidated mess of material strung up on some piping. Most alarmingly, the pots or tubs where you stick your feet to soak in a mess of moldy old fruit totally has a ring of dirt and filth around it. You sit on this stained, smelly, old couch that looks like someone swiped it out of the garbage on the street. The place is just truly unsanitary. I shudder thinking about my feet in that bowl. Just SO NOT WORTH IT. I looked at the list of treatments before I left and the person who was kind enough to buy my gift cerificate paid $85 for this shabby, filthy, below average service. DO NOT GO TO THIS HELLHOLE, TRUST ME!!!! Cons: Dirty, Unsanitary, Ridiculously Overpriced Services more

A Valentine's Day Couple's Massage Love Affair 2/27/2008

What a wonderful beginning to a romantic and unforgettable Valentine's Day...My fiance booked a surprise couples massage for us at Just Calm Down. He chose this unbelievable Moroccan Massage that totally blew us away. Even with the big croud awaiting their services, the staff and therapists were so gracious and truly made us feel like we were the only one's in the room! The service left us both wanting for more. We are both massage gurus and we both agreed that this massage was amongst the BEST! New York Magazine was 100% right voting them Best Massage! The space is really pretty and takes you away from the hustle of the city. After our massages we had these really decadent pedicures with all kinds of yummy scrubs. We loved relaxing on the couch inside the really cool tent. if your up for a very different kind of pedicure experience...this is the place. Much better than Rescue... Especially cause the staff is so nice and down to earth! The sangria which came with the service as part of the Valentine's Special package was perfectly delicious. Just calm Down was certainly the best before dinner surprise ever! When checking out, we were truly happy to hear others talking about how wonderful their services were. We will be back and recommend that you revel in the magic as well. We will spread the word! more

Best Nails In NYC 2/27/2008

just calm down has the best manis and pedis Iever had. Took my boy for a Valentine's Day treat and he also fell in love. The soaks and the scrubs are beyond nothing I have ever experienced before. The tent is also beyond cute... I had the Grape Gatsby...The grapes were so fun to play with! But, I really enjoyed the fabulous massage and outdtanding scrub! Feet never felt so smoothe! They also offered us their special Valentine's Sangria-whiuch was delicious. My boy tried their special Paradis one. It smelled unreal. The chocolate and fig combo is out of theis world. I have manicures every week, and I must say the nail services at Just Calm Down are well worth the price! Just GO and you will see what I am talking about! Pros: Great Tent! Awesome Nail Services Cons: Can't Go Enough more

very decietful 2/18/2008

I went here yesterday with my boyfriend for valentines day weekend. We came from philadelphia to spend the day in new york. He has been wanting a pedicure for a while so I searched the internet to find the right place. I was really impressed with the way Just calm down described their pedicures, and how they got good ratings, so I chose this to be the place. THEY DID NOT STAY TRUE TO THEIR ADVERTISMENT AT ALL. We got the chocolate pedi and the wine pedi. they poured one piture of COOL water in the tub which didnt even cover the tops of our feet. the scrubs they used WERE NOTchocolate or wine. they DIDN'T offer us a glass of wine or hot chocolate like the pedicure SAYS IT DOES. they barley used any lotion for the massage, which lasted 1 mintue anyway. everything was FILTHY. they didnt ask my boyfriend if he wanted his nails buffed. the worst part was that we paid $85 each for a HALF HOUR HORRIBLE PEDICURE. the receptionist wasent even paying attention and almost charged us for 2 massages! I would NEVERrecommend this place to anyone Cons: everything more

romantic getaway in NYC 2/4/2008

Loved our visit to Just calm Down. It was our three year anniversary last month and I wanted something truly special to do before our big night out he was planning. Being new to NYC, I chose Just Calm Down upon recommendation. We both loved it upon first entering. The staff was so sweet and the services excellent. We started with unbelievable massages on warm water beds listening to our choice of music. Great touch! Our massages were truly decadent and we both loved the amazing streching they involved. The couples room was romantic and warm...we didn't want the session to end. We floated to a beautiful tent where we snuggled on a couch sipping hot cocoa during wine pedicures. It was my boy's first and he was so impressed with how great his feet felt that I know he'll be back. Planning Valentine's Day to begin at Just Calm Down and to end engaged...As the helpless romantic...I will be asking him! Pros: Absolutely Everything Cons: none more

from the moment your walk through the door until you have to go back to reality, just calm down spa makes you feel like a queen...the service is spectacular and the ambience is beautiful...by far, this is the best mani / pedi in the world....my ten fingers and toes always jump for joy when they know just calm down is on the way...tara and her staff know just what to do to make everything perfect...if your ten fingers and toes want to visit the happiest place on earth, just calm down is the place to go... Pros: wonderful, fabulous, amazing!!!!! more

Best Facial 1/23/2008

I came last week to Just Calm Down for the first time and I was so thrilled with my service. I am usually afraid to get a facial but the woman I spoke with on the phone assured me that my facialist would transform my skin and not hurt it. She was 100% right! Alana, the woman who worked on me has magical hands. Not only did she clean my skin beautifully but she massaged my face and shoulders perfectly. I never knew how relaxing a facial could be and of course how beneficial. I did not even have to moisturize for 2 days as my skin was so smooth and silky. I recommend just calm down to anyone who needs to get a facial that will change their life. I love this place and will be back in a month! Pros: wonderful facials, beautiful space Cons: none more

So Fabulous! 1/23/2008

As a long time just calm down spa goer, I must say I am completely surprised to read any poor reviews. In a city like New York It is so difficult to find a spa as sweet and pretty as Just Calm Doiwn...I truly believe that the poor reviews must come frim disgruntled ex-employees who have nothing better to do then bash their fabulous former work place. The services at this place are barnone the best I ever had...I totally agree with New York Magazine's Best Massage review 2007 as the Moroccan Massage is out of this world. The waxing is so reasonably priced and the ladies that wax are truly meticulous. and make me laugh every time The pedicures make your feet soft for weeks! Really! ...and if you are looking for superb customer service, this is the spot. So read the shining reviews and take them to heart as this place ROCKS! Pros: decor, staff, services---all excellent! Cons: ex-employees more

Worst Spa in the World 1/16/2008

This is the absolute WORST place I have ever been in my ENTIRE life! I have been to spas all over the world and live in New York City where I have also spent time in many spa establishments. The service here is completely unprofessional and unaccomodating. They made me feel uncomforable and stressed out. I made an appointment and they called me the day before (when I had made it WEEKS ago!) and cancelled it (this has never happened to me). When I tried to re-schedule, they were very unaccomodating. I also bought a gift certifcate for a friend who ended up moving to Europe. When I asked if I could use it myself (seeing as I bought it!) they said NO and would not budge. They stole my money. PLEASE PLEASE do not go here - it's a nightmare! Pros: NONE Cons: Everything - bad manners, bad service more

I Love This Place! 1/10/2008

Could not believe how sweet just calm down was. The moroccan tent where I experienced my unbelievable pedicure was really just so chic! The lady who gave me my service was really quite knowledgable and absolutely perfect in her technique. My polish is still on 4 weeks later, not to mention it's totally ORGANIC! Love that since I am pregnant! The environment is really just chill and conducive for those who want to get away from the typical uppity places. I truly recommend this place to everyone who loves cool and fabulous services and perfect customer service! Yeah to the staffers of just calm down! more

A Gift Certificate Gem! 12/30/2007

I was so happy to receive my first gift certificate to just calm down. The experience from beginning to end was pleasurable. The ladies at the front desk are ever so helpful and truly knowledgable about the different menu options. I decided to indulge in the pumpkin pedicure and hot stone masage---(The Rock Star!!! How cool...) I have had stone massages other places, and my one with Maya was exceptional. She actually used the hot stones in rythem with her hand movements and my body felt like melted butter. YUM! The Pumpkin Pedicure left me smelling like grandmas house and feeling foot fabulous. As a runner, my sore feet are hard to fix, but the girl who took care of me was a genius! Her name was Ester. She was so sweet and lovely. I called my friend who gave me the certificate and thanked her so much for the best gift ever. I also purchased some gift certificates for xmas gifts for my co-workers. Some have already used them and loved the place too. Pros: sweet staff, beautiful decor, excellent services, quirky menu Cons: should be open 24 hours! more

Got To Go Now! 12/29/2007

I was so thrilled with all of my treatments I had on Christmas Eve. The wonderful experience has stayed with me and has definitely given me a fresh start into the new year. I've been having problems with my skin so I decided to treat myself with a facial, the therapist recommended I do a deep cleansing facial but also do a peel with it to help with the top layer of gook, I think it's something called glycolic. I think the girls were sisters at the desk (forgot to ask but by the way- so cute) and they recommended a foot massage at the same time, and though at first hesitant (holiday budget) I decided to go ahead and treat myself and was so happy I did. Awesome~ Awesome You should definately look into the spa as it's so cool and different. Pros: Everything Cons: None more

Fantastical! 12/29/2007

Such a wonderful place. Really enjoyed all of my treatments, especially my facial with Alana. Not only is she truly beautiful, she has hands of gold. My skin has never felt and looked so great. it's been four weeks and I am still glowing. I am now planning a baby shower for my friend and the ladies have been extremely helpful. They have left no stone unturned and have helped me through every step of the process. I am so excited to introduce just calm down to all my friends and I was lucky enough to have received a gift certificate my first time around. I am counting the days till the party! Pros: A truly wonderful place Cons: None more

I indeed calmed down!! 12/27/2007

Work has been crazy for me so i thought it was hysterical when my best friend got me a gift certificate to a spa called Just Calm Down! But the spa lives to its name! I had an amazing spa day there! My massage with Claire was the best I've ever have...i guess that's why they are always in every magazine I see! I also had an amazing pedicure in their Moroccan tent. Pure bliss!! Keep on rockin! Pros: best spa in Manhattan!!! more

AWESOME!!! 12/26/2007

I went to just calm down a few days ago with my mom. just calm down rocks!!! The staff is hip and fun! Especially the owner. She is a doll. I had a Three Kings Massage holiday special and it was to die for. And I've been to a lot of spas including the best of the best. just calm down is a cool spa where you feel like all the girls there are your girlfriends. Love it! and my mom loved it too! Pros: Hip, Fun, Great Service, Awesome Atmosphere Cons: Nothing! love it!! more

GIFT CERTIFICATE HELL 12/21/2007

So, this is the second year in a row I've had a gift certificate expire from this place because every time I call to book I'm juggled around in a frantic, frenetic frenzy by the insane receptionist (who a co-worker told me is actually the owner, all I can say is she needs to calm the hell down), put on hold multiple times and then finally am told the only appointments are months and months ahead of time. Someone else wrote a review about this so at least I am not alone, but it makes me wonder about the business practices of this company. To add insult to injury, I WORK ON THE BLOCK!!! I can see they're not that busy; I told my boss this year to re-think giving gift certificates from this place because our gifts go unused by half the office every year. Apparently, gift certificates are money in the bank for this place and they'd rather it sit there until it expires than honor your gift. Truly, truly awful experience with this place. Pros: close to my job Cons: cannot use my gift certificate, chaotic, terrible customer service more

The result is a place where the client calls the shots, choosing everything from music to the ingredients and scents used in treatments. Patrons pick the oil blend for massages--and, with some guidance, products for their facial. Truly decadent are the manicures and pedicures, which use ingredients like apples and flowers.
