Happy Birthday To Me!!! 12/16/2007

Best Gift Certificate Ever!! 12/15/2007

So thankful my team bought me a gift certificate at just calm down. From booking until completion, the experience was nothing short of fantastic! The place is sooo cozy and warm that it's hard to leave at the end of your services. When I came into book, the girls at the desk made miracle and got me in for my treatments 3 days later when they heard that I was so stressed out. My moviestar massage was out of this world. My therapist was so knowledgable, she was able to work out kinks from a old injury that I never thought was possible. I felt like melted butter! My facial was a dream. My skin never glowed so beautifully! I also was lucky enought o relax in the cool tented room during my unbelievable pedicure. Couldn't believe the creativity and love put into all the services. I have received many gift cards..t.his was by far the best. Just Calm down has so much talent inside its walls that it is no surprize the long wait it sometimes takes to book appointments. But, what I will tell all those who have to wait-It's well worth it! I will never go anywhere else again! I'm HOOKED! Pros: Believe all the hype! It truly is heaven on earth! Cons: Can't move in! more

LOVED IT! 12/3/2007

I was given a gift certificate for Xmas last year and I finally got around to using it- haven't stopped thinking about my services since! Even the front desk girls are memoriable! My gift certificate was for a body scrub called Diamond In the Buff (so cute!) and the Grape Gatsby Pedicure (which even comes with a glass on wine!). I decided to opt out of the scrub and use the Gift Certificate towards an amazing hawaiin massage called Lomi Lomi. Even the massage therapist was hawaiin! How cool is that? I ended up getting both a mani and pedi in their comfy tented room! I have to say it's a really great spa, I've been to several in the city and this has to have the nicest atmosphere of them all!!!!! more

Hidden Gem... 10/30/2007

As I was taking a lovely autumn walk on my day off (from my CRAZY job!), I walked down 22nd street and stummbled upon a window full of feathers and a sign stating "just calm down". I peered inside and the place looked super duper cute. So, I decided to enter and check the place out. Being from the midwest originally, I was so suprised with how nice and friendly everyone was (New York sometimes moves very quickly, so it's always a pleasure to find a place that feels "like home") I felt with all the city air and the change in weather my skin needed some serious help. They had a cancellation and got me right in. I was BLOWN AWAY by how pretty the back area was (there was this amazing tent that I was told they do pedicures in- awesome decor!) The facial was amazing, Elana worked magic! I never knew a facial could such wonderous things! She also tamed my CRAZY brows and is helping to maintain my skin (think she might be a lifesaver during these cold months to come.) During the facial she also let me know she did pedicures as well, so I thought... "why not??" I got the "Pumpkin for your thoughts" Pedicure, perfect for my autumn walk- I got this amazing red color on my little piggies, the color lasted like 5 weeks as well! Overall, really quite the little hidden gem I must say. I'm going to have my bday party there in January, I'm so excited as my best friend from the midwest is visiting, it'll be a nice place for her to meet my new friends at the same time as getting pampered!!! Pros: Great Customer Service, Awesome Treatments, Great Ambience Cons: Wish they could be open eight days more

All I Can Say Is WOW! 10/29/2007

I never ususally write reviews, but I was so thrilled with my experience at just calm down I wanted the whole world to know. The customer service is really incredible. The girls at the desk treat you like royalty the minute you arrive. Offering you drinks and just being plain old fashioned NICE! What a change from the other snooty spas in NYC. My Lomi Lomi Massage (which I first had in Hawaii) was even better and more relaxing then I can remember. It truly transformed my mind, muscles and soul. After the crazy work week I was having, it was the best treat I could ask for. I am still blessing the person who gave me the gift certificate. I enjoyed myself so much, I bought my friend the same massage for her birthday. She was also blown away-- THIRLLED beyond words. Since my miraculous massage, I have been back for a facial and pedicure. The same woman worked wonders on both my feet and face. Alana is her name. She has hands of gold and her work is perfect. My red polish has yet to chip and my face is still glowing. I have finally found the spa for me! I recommend just calm down to anyone and everyone !!! Whether you are a spa expert or just looking for some relaxation you will not find a better place then just calm down! Pros: Beyond The Best At Everything! Cons: None! more

Absolutely Amazing! 10/18/2007

Hands-down, one of the best spas I've visited in the city -- and I've been to a LOT of them! I've gone there twice, for a massage and for one of the special mani/pedis, and was taken care of from the second I walked in the door. Everyone there is so friendly and helpful, including the owner who is always behind the counter helping/greeting people or running off to get you water, tea, you name it! Massages are so relaxing and the mani/pedis are top notch. All of the aestheticians are wonderful as well and know exactly when they should talk or when they should leave you to your own thoughts -- especially good during a massage when you want it to be quiet! I recommend this place highly. I also love the jewelry and beauty store in the front -- there are always really interesting pieces for sale. Unfortunately the pedis are a bit expensive (around $85), but if you want a totally pampering experience you will find it here. Pros: friendly service, knowledgeable staff, wonderful services Cons: A bit on the expensive side more

Pros: brilliant staff, fabulous services , beautiful decor Cons: those people who just don't get it! ot get how to just calm down!! more

No way to just calm down 9/4/2007

Careless, unprofessional, goofy and noisy do not begin to describe this nail salon/spa. My experience was awful. My appt was scheduled to just get me in the door, knowing that they could not perform the service until at least 45 minutes after the scheduled time. Proof was the masseuse had no idea why my appt was scheduled for that time! Management is nasty, nasty underneath a condescending blather where everyone is honey or baby or sweetie. Serene and peaceful, it is not! Inside is like a chicken coop of chattering staff and ladies getting their nails down inches away from the massage room. Do not go! You will not calm down! Cons: Service stinks, appt times are meaningless, noisy more

A Heavenly Hideaway in the Chaos of NYC 8/27/2007

I live around the corner from just calm down and i've been so happy with my experiences there...it's a place where i can escape from the rigors of my job, husband, kids, their homework & laundry, etc to unwind with a glass of wine, a thick issue of Vanity Fair and the comfort of Ilona, the Picasso of pedicurists who at this point knows me well enough to choose the service and color for me. Ilona also takes care of me for my monthly oxygen facial which has "calmed down" (sorry for the pun) my rosacea to the point that I have given up my liquid foundation and just rock a natural glow. The staff (besides my beloved Ilona) is curteous, funny, quirky and real, they are not femmebots who mutely take your name, usher you into your service and hand you your bill...the girls here have become people I look forward to catching up with when I see them (and from the way they shout my name when I come in the door, I think the feeling may be mutual). From reading some of the negative reviews all I can say is that just calm down is not for someone looking for a cookie cutter spa experience where you are just another "client" being prodded and "serviced"...just calm down is where you come if you want to be treated like a lifelong friend (a friend who just happens to treat you to amazing manicures, pedicures, massages and facials). I got a gift certificate for a facial at Bliss Soho last Christmas from my sister-in-law and let me tell you the difference was incredible! I felt so LONELY at Bliss, totally unimportant and invisible and the massage I had was kind of uninspiring (there's no way I would trust my face to anyone but Ilona, so I switched out the facial for a massage). I came right back to just calm down and recommend that anyone looking for a PERSONALIZED, THOUGHTFUL AND CREATIVE spa do the same. more

party heaven 8/27/2007

As an avid just calm down spa goer, I was so excited that my friends threw me a surprise pre-wedding girls spa day! My bridesmaids told me how nice the staff was when planning and how informative they were as well. We all had the Sweet Shoppe mani and pedis inside the famous Moroccan Tent. We all loved feeling like royalty during our treatments. The couch is so comfy! Just love the vintage feel. Also love the foot bowls and how clean they are! The drinks that come with the services are delicious...especially the sangria. They only serve red wine as that is the most antioxident and the best for feet dipping, but you may have anything else brought in or caterd. My friends and I love to toast each other so we decided to have champagne and white wine as well. The other call thing is that since it was such a hot day, they offered us our pedis on ice as an option. My toes absolutely tingled when I was finished! It has been three week since the party and I am now back from my honeymoon and my polish is still perfect! I recommend just calm down to anyone who likes a cool and downtown kind of feel. There are no white walls and lab coats here!! Pros: Best Nail Services and Ambience!!! Cons: Only one Location! Open More! more

you're unbelievable!!! 8/24/2007

Best by far of any spa I have ever been too. Nothing like the others! In fact, even over the phone the place is impressive. The front desk crew treats you like royalty! They really know the place inside and out and can guide you through the creative menu expertly! I have been a just calm down lover for years and truly have enjoyed every treatment I have ever received. So much so, that I decided to through our annual work party there. I couldn't believe how fludily the staff ran the event and was not at all surprised how happy my co-workers were with the treatments. We rented the entire space, and just went crazy!! My facial and massage were out of this world, while the sangria pedi ( it was on ice, a special they offer for hot days) was truly a foot lifesaver! The next day I received tons a thank you emails begging me for another event at just calm down asap! Thank you to all the staff at just calm down for making this spa day the best event ever!!! See you soon.... Pros: EVERYTHING! Cons: NONE! more

Polish gone less than 24 hours after my $85 Pedicure! 8/19/2007

I have lived in NYC for 14 years and am someone who gets spa services and manis/pedis on a regular basis. There were so many issues with this place i dont even know where start so I'll talk first about the tent. The "moroccan tent" is nothing more than a tiny area that fits 2 people for pedis - it looks nothing like the photo - it is made of crudely stapled together canvas that has moldy stains all over it . You sit on a couch that was probably cute about 10 years ago but it now stained and gross. The metal tubs that you put your feet in also look old and rusty and unsanitary. I peeked behind the moldy tent and saw piled up old dirty towels and garbage back there. They claim that the services come with unlimited wine and sangria - the sangria was nasty - undrinkable, and they had 1/2 a bottle of white wine to offer us, that had fruit flies in it. When we asked for more wine, it took forever and we could only have red - not so great for a party of white wine drinkers on a 90 degree day. Especially when the wine/drinks aspect was pitched to us so heavily when we booked. We were a party of 6 and they made half of us wait while the other half got done - had we known this in advance we wouldnt have gone here (or if the drinks were what we were promised, the waiting wouldnt have been so bad). The nailpolish they used on me literally rubbed off later that night which probably means it was old. Pretty annoying when I am paying $85 for a pedicure. And the whole gimmick about sticking your hands and feet in chocolate, cake, fruit etc - is SO not what they make it out to be - it's actually kind of unpleasant. It was a total waste of money, the place is gross with nasty cold old tile floors and I would never go back here and I hope i dont get a fungus. Great concept, too bad they missed the boat on exectuting it. And the owner and spa coordinators are very nice and sweet but totally scatterbrained. Pros: Concept Cons: Grossly overpriced for what you get, lacking in cleanliness and services subpar more

OVER RATED! 7/17/2007

THIS PLACE IM SORRY TO SAY IS HORRIBLE.. I FELT AS THOUGH I WAS BEING RUSHED OUT.. STARTING FROM MY FACIAL DOWN TO MY PEDICURE.. TOTALLY OVER-RATED! I OVER PAID FOR BAD QUALITY SERVICE!! ANOTHER THING I DISLIKED WAS THE THERAPISTS WOULD TALK ABOUT EACH OTHER... HOW UNPROFESSIONAL IS THAT?! THIS PLACE DEFINITELY NEEDS SOME KIND OF IMPROVEMENT... OR LESS RATING... COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY.. Pros: neighborhood Cons: mostly everything more

My Second Home 7/12/2007

I came with my BFFs for our 30th Birthdays to celebrate and had a completely amazing time through and through. The ladies at the front desk were so helpful with coordinating the party and making everything flow so that we had time to hang with each other as well as time to "Just Calm Down." I had a "Jewel" facial with Kerrin who rocked my world and should have her fingers bronzed (she does this massage-y, tapp-y thing along your face that feels so incredible), a "Split Personality" massage which was this cool massage with drops of warm oil up and down your back that felt like summer rain and then topped it off with heat which totally relaxed my lower back, hands down best massage EVER (ask for Claire, you'll thank me later), and then I had the Grape Gatsby "on the rocks" which is a wine soaked pedicure (AND they served me some delish Shiraz) pedicure with a grapey, sugar-y scrub that was off the charts good (can't remeber the name of my nail girl, but all of us had our nails done together in the moroccan tent and all the ladies were talented, detail-oriented & truly nice. Another plus I think is worth mentioning for music nerds like me, their music list is the best. Everything from Coltrane to Lily Allen to the Police. Pros: great services, awesome staff, affordable, fun for girls night out, great music Cons: i can't move in more

Great Spa! 6/28/2007

I was so surprised to see the review that says "ouch!" two below. Just Calm Down is one of my favorite spas and all the workers there are so nice! To be honest I think the review is bogus because how do you know all the the names of the workers at the spa (including two receptionists?!) when it was your first time there! I can understand if you are a repeating customer but come on?!? I never remember names like that on my first visit. I go to Just Calm Down a lot and I like it because it is not your typical spa. All the treatments are fantastic (my fav is the movie star massage). No the prices are not cheap but they are pretty standard for quality spa services in the city. I suggest this spa to anyone who likes great service and a hip atmosphere instead of the typical spa "medicinal" feel. more

believe the hype: just calm down is fantasic 6/27/2007

Okay, so for the record: the last reviewer seems clearly skewed by her relationship to a former employee (digruntled much?) As a loyal just calm down client who has been seeing Kerrin to tame my adult acne for 4 years plus now I decided to write my first review of what I consider to be a neighborhood hangout as well as a place to "just calm down." I usually do the oxygen facial which at $150 is the most expensive they offer, so the reviewer's claim of over $300 spent sounds a bit hyperbolic. And while no extraction I've had at any spa is what I'd call pleasant, they are a necessary evil and a small part of what usually is an overwhelmingly relaxing and calming treat I look forward to every month. Yeah, sometimes there's a wait, and while I prefer to swoosh right into my appointment, I never mind hanging on the cozy couches with a glass of red wine and a magazine. Let the haters hate: I'll keep my monthly with Kerrin where like "Cheers" everybody knows your name, before I step foot in an assembly line Bliss or Christine Chin. Pros: down to earth vibe, great services, no attitude, friendly employees, the vino more

The best of The Best of The Best!!! 6/5/2007

I'm kind of shocked by Just Calm Down's latest review; I visited for the first time last week with my mom and we had such a great time. We both had Pitter Patter raindrop massages in the room for two; Sandra was my massage therapist and she was probably the best massage therapist I have ever had, she had magic fingers that melted my knots away and the oils they used were deeeelish. Afterwards we had pedicures side by side in their tent and unlike the previous reviewer I had a fantastic experience through and through. Ilona did my pedicure and she was friendly, sweet and really talented--it's the best pedicure I've had and I've been to Bliss, Jin Soon and Rescue where I never felt as pampered, relaxed or appreciated as a customer. The scrubs were all handmade and smelled fantastic, my Wisteria Lane service was filled with chamomile, lavender, apples and honey, I almost dipped my fingers in the soak and had a taste! I'll definitely be back to visit the ladies at Just Calm Down and I would recommend it to all of my girlfriends. Pros: Friendliest Staff, Great Service, Fun Atmosphere, Relaxed Ambiance Cons: There isn't an 8th day of the week to go! more

Disappointed based on the great reviews 5/26/2007

I went thinking this place would be something else & was fairly disappointed. The pedicure I got was only ok - my feet do look nice, but could have been scrubbed more. The most annoying part was that I had to sit and listen to two Russian estheticians snicker for half the time (and from my poor Russian I could make out that they weren't saying very nice things about the clients they were serving). Not very relaxing. What is the hype all about? I'm not even picky and was disappointed - that says a lot. If you're going to spend $100 go to Bliss or somewhere you can be assured of a great experience. more

Best Bet for Groups 4/17/2007

I'm planning my second party for business clients with just calm down and felt compelled to share my experience with them. Heather, the spa director there, has been out and out AMAZING to work with. From my inquiry straight through to the end of the party she was taking care of business. I didn't have to do a thing. She took care of catering, organizing the services for my clients, working with challenging time frames and schedules and her customer service the day of the party was top notch. She even made us sangria to sip on during our treatments. I was really impressed as well with the staff who provided our treatments: I had a Movie massage and chocolate/coffe scrub with Maya and I melted under her magic hands. Ilona did my manicure and pedicure (with a moroccan theme it had mint and couscous and a bunch of other ingredients I can't remember but the final product was probably the best manicure and pedicure I've had, beats anything I have ever had at Rescue and Bliss, by MILES). I've since been back solo to have a facial and waxing with Karen and I can't say enough about this girl's talent and easygoing personality. My skin has been glowing and it's the first brazilian I've ever had that didn't give me bumps and ingrowns (gross, I know). I'm looking forward to my next party for clients at just calm down: I know that they'll be impressed and we all leave pampered and relaxed. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Pros: AMAZING customer service, unique treatments, large space for parties/guests, individualized service Cons: A bit pricey, but worth it more

Good spa in category of 3/29/2007

The owner receptionist is a little on the eccentric side, but she always fits me in. Kerrin does my facials. She has magic fingers. The fixtures and interior decorating reflect the fact that this is an owner operated business -- and the owners eccentricity. I don't think it's fair to compare the facilities of a business this size to a Bliss Spa which is owned by Starwood Hotels (one of the world's largest hotel operators). But I do think you can compare the quality of the services. more
