Confirmation Please? 11/21/2002

Just recently celebrated my wife's birthday by taking her out to Jake's. I made the reservations 2 weeks in advance knowing how busy they can get. When the night arrived they curiously misplaced my reservation and then just stared at me as if I were suppose to confess that I actually hop around to busy portland eateries for the fun of it claiming to have a reservation. No apologies were given either. End result we got a table 30 min later, dined on amazing Austrailian lobster tails and had a great server. Jake's, you might want to look into how you take & store your reservations. Cheers! Pros: Good Valet, Great Seafood, Great Servers Cons: Very rude hostess, Poor waiting area more

Terrific 11/20/2002

For as long as I've been in Portland, Jake's has always been an excellent place to dine and take out-of-town guests for fun, particularly if they like seafood. It is expensive but no more so than any restaurant considered it's peers. The selections in alway amazing. It's hard to believe there is that much fresh fish available. For lunch try the local Crab and Salmon chowder, sour dough bread and a glass of chardonnay ......... enjoy!! Pros: Close to the Pearl, Always lively, Go hungry Cons: Parking can be tough more

Good for old schoolers 11/12/2002

Good food - just did not like the atmosphere. We (my friends and I) like to drink wine, but are not wine snobs by any means. Our server hounded us while we could not make up our minds on the wine - was very annoying! Pros: tastey food, good value, fresh fish Cons: not many veg options, service too attentive more

Mediocre tourist restaurant 11/12/2002

The food is nothing special, but is very expensive. I've eaten there several times (out-of-towners always insist) and every time we have ALL come away disappointed. Don't believe the hype. This place sucks. more

Again, a winner 9/27/2002

We took my fiancee's Aunt and Uncle here and had a fantastic meal. The other 3 being from Louisiana, I was worried they wouldn't want to eat here. Since they have such a wide variety they were happy as can be. We started with fantastic crab cakes and oysters on half shells to start. The chowder was very good, but not the best I've ever had. The mealks were mostly the stuffed salmon, shich I must say was worth every penny. Truly magnificent, the table was thrilled with the results. The tomba tuna was ok. I wish I'd gone for the ahi tuna but always worth trying something new. It was good, just not great. In retrospect should have tried the plank salmon. Desserts were very good. Although the meal did run $175 with tip, it was worth the fine dining experience they provided. Service was impeccible. more

Coming from San Francisco, where it's one of the world's best place to dine. I highly recommend Jake's! more

Great Seafood 9/14/2002

Good, Food,Service and Menu Variety. Parking can be hard to find. Pros: Excellent Service, Excellent Reservation Cons: Parking more

outstanding 9/5/2002

My girlfriend and I have been there twice now, and the only thing to say is the food is excellent, everytime, the staff is attentive but not in the way and you're never rushed. It can be well hidden with the huge crab on the roof of the building but don't be fooled, this place is top shelf. Pros: Food, service, FOOD Cons: parking, cost more

Excellent!! 8/11/2002

My favorite restaurant in Portland so far. Service is friendly, but slow. Atmosphere is very nice, I recommend sitting in the bar for small parties because the entertainment from the people walking by outside is interesting. Personal favorite is the crawfish stuffed catfish with a spicey sauce that accentuates this dish perfectly. Sides include garlic mashed potatoes and corn and being from the south, this hits home. I highly recommend Jakes. Pros: The food, Atmosphere, Portlands finest Cons: Slow service, Small booths more

Best in town 7/25/2002

The best mashe potatos, salmon and I highly recomend the lemon cheesecake. That was the best meal I had in Portland! more

Better Service at McDonald's 7/18/2002

Went to dinner in a group of 16 with reservations 2 weeks in advance. Group was split into 2 on different sides of the restraunt. Service was terrible and very slow. Our waiter couldn't have been worse. On a high note the food was good. The overall experience was very poor and disappointing. Pros: Good food Cons: Poor Service, Slow, Expensive more

Classic Portland Seafood 7/13/2002

This is the place to take your out of town guests for a slice of the Portland restaurant scene. Solid bar, attentive waitstaff and excellent seafood combine to provide a classic dining experience. Try the Tombo, Copper River Salmon or the Seafood Newburg. You won't be disappointed. Pros: bartenders, waitstaff, fresh seafood Cons: can be crowded, can be noisy more

Oregon at it's best. 7/9/2002

Jake's represents the best Oregon has to offer. Downtown, the old school charm of it's antique paintings of the state's legendary landscapes combined with splendid seafood make Jake's my favorite dinner spot anywhere. Whether the occasion is entertaining guests or family from out-of-town, a romantic dinner, or just a casual get-together, Jake's is the spot. Never had a bad experience, the service is excellent and the decor is classy yet unpretentious. Seafood is to die for, especially the oysters available for choosing in the bar. Never had a bad piece of fish, and the sturgeon is always out of this world. Patron for life. Pros: Unbelievable Seafood, Great Decor Cons: Addictively good more

Has Anyone Really Eaten Here? 6/18/2002

After reading many of the rave reviews, I asked myself if anyone writing these reviews has actually eaten at Jake's. My experiences have been disappointing. The food has been marginal at best. The service has been consistently atrocious! Marginal food and surly service... not the greatest combination for a fine dining experience. more

Great for Out-of-Towners 5/19/2002

My parents still talk about Jake's. Being from the Midwest, my parents had never really tasted fresh seafood until they dined at Jakes. Of course, locals know that it's possible to get this kind of high-quality fish everywhere in Portland--but my folks still associate their meals at Jakes' with ""True Northwest Seafood."" Sure, locals may be tired of it to some extent--but out-of-towners really can't get enough. Pros: Huge menu, Fresh fish Cons: Long lines more
