wonderful seafood 1/5/2010

We stumbled upon this place quite by accident and were impressed by a very complete menu of fresh seafood that was well prepared and presented. Excellent service by Mike our waiter. We cannot wait to go back. Pros: excellent food and service Cons: very big but not cavernous more

Gotta be one of the best Happy Hour Spots in PDX 11/27/2009

Love Jakes for the consistent ly great happy hour. Amazing food for cheap! Pros: Excellent Food, All the time, great service also Cons: might be hard to find a seat or table more

Treat myself to a blowout at Jakes every couple years 11/21/2009

I love the buzz whenever I go to Jakes. Menus and decor can be emulated, but that certain bit excitement that some places is unique. I always feel like I'm at the top of the world once I walk in. The drinks are made the way they should be, waiters look classy, and the food is outstanding. Plan on a long evening and make some new friends while hanging out in the bars. Pros: atmosphere, oysters Cons: maybe too crowded sometimes?? more

Great place to take the boss! 10/23/2009

Drink - Fresh squeezed grapefruit juice with Cuervo Gold. Appetizer: Cajun Popcorn Main Course: It's always a toss-up! You can never go wrong with the Dungeness Crab Leg Saute or the Parmesan Petrole Sole. Jake's is a not to be missed Portland classic. Pros: Fabulously fresh seafood Cons: Absolutely none more

One of our favorites! 10/6/2009

I've been going here for years. Every meal has been beyond tasty. The wine has affordable options if you aren't looking to spend a lot and they come in 8oz pours, too. Pros: Delicious food, good service, affordable wine Cons: Not a good last minute dinner without a reservation, HH more

Best food EVER!!! 8/31/2009

I was so disappointed to read the bad reviews that seem to be popping up here. I live in Eugene but go to Jake's everytime I come to town. The food can be expensive, but totally worth it. Last time we were there my boyfriend got the crab stuffed salmon and said it was the best meal he has EVER had. My coconut mahi mahi was moist and flavorful as were the clams we got as an appetizer. I will continue to go back Pros: Food, location, ambiance Cons: what cons more

Don't waste your money. 6/23/2009

Been here several times over the years with out of towners. This place is running on reputation that it earned years ago, but no longer deserves. Food is wayyy overpriced for what you get. Especially in this town, one can find a truly inspired meal, a dazzling one, for the same price or less. Soup tastes like it came from a can. Service is spotty - can be great or awful - you just never know. Bartender named Bobby is always nice. If you eat outside, expect to be open to harassment by any of the ""colorful"" characters who wander around this place. Pros: Attractive bar Cons: Overpriced mediocre food, bad service, bad outside dining more

Not a Good Night 3/20/2009

On this occassion, I received very poor service. I frequent McCormick restaurants frequently, and this visit was a major dissapointment. We we seated at a very small table, which I believe staff reserve for people of my height. It is a corner table, but the foot space is very small and the chairback, upright, without a cushion. One can feel every movement of the other individual sharing the bench behind. While our waiter was courteous, he served us the longest meal I have had in a LONG time. He left us for a full 1/2 hour before presenting us with the bill and then he hurried off so quickly we could not pay and leave. When we did leave we noticed he seemed to be enjoying the company or other patrons - but didn't have time for us. The food was decent, but the service overwelmed the experience. Pros: Ambience, food Cons: Service more

No Reason To Go Hear 2/5/2009

I've been to Jakes a few times now. I have always found the food to be good as well as the service. However, the food, and especially the wine, is very overpriced. In addition, the ambience it poor in most areas of the restaurant. The exception is the bar area, which is cozy. The last time I went I got the feeling that it was an upscale Applybees. With the all the excellent small restaurants in Portland there is no reason to every go to Jakes. Many have better food, most have better ambience, and most are much cheaper. more

Overpriced, okay food. Tourist trap 1/25/2009

Fresh seafood, prepared with less flavor than the menu would suggest and paired with mostly tasteless sides (among other things I am confident my mashed potatoes were instant). The bar has a nice upscale traditional atmosphere but with all the great food in this town I truly don't understand why people rave about the food at this place. Especially for the price. Pros: Fresh seafood Cons: Overpriced, marginally prepared food, high priced wine list more

Yummy, but Snooty with a big S 1/17/2009

I visited Jake's last Tuesday. I have visited various McCormicks in the area a number of times. I stood waiting to be attended to while staff stood at the front desk doing their own tasks. I was asked in a snooty manner whether I had a reservation, with very poor eye contact. I had not made a reservation. I did not feel as though I had to mention that I was a preferred member (which allows for seating). We were seated and our hostess was a warm, mature lady, but did not attend to us much. I had the sole and my companion a salmon. Both our meals were good, but VERY over-priced. We opted to have after dinner drinks at home, due to the over-priced entrees. We had to wait forever for the bill, while we tried to locate our server. Pros: Old fixture in Portland Cons: Restaurant needs refurbishing, uncomfortable booths, poor service, poor customer care more

Disappointing, Very Disappointing 1/2/2009

Went here with my lady friend on New Year?s Eve, so I have taken that into consideration. That said, we WERE promptly seated because we had a reservation but service was otherwise abysmally slow. Drinks: Being in the industry, I could tell you their wine was marked up over 400%...ridiculous! My Guinness was also watered down, which I found infuriating. Food: While our Ahi Tuna was passable- definitely nothing special- our very expensive steak was well below standard for a restaurant of this supposed caliber. I realize that Jake?s specialty is seafood, but I?ve cooked many a better steak at home. Everything Else: The atmosphere was lively enough. Our waitress, well, I understand that it was incredibly busy but if this is the job you?ve chosen, then soldier through it and be a little more upbeat, please! Finally, Jake?s is incredibly overpriced. We simply did not get our value for the money at this Jake?s location. more

Jake's Crawfish is always reliable 12/17/2008

Dined at Jake's last night, it is always good. Great service, good food. This review is in response to the Cajun reviewer. How can you review a restaurant if you don't dine there? You might be surprised at the wonderful selection of restaurants in Portland. Give Portland a chance Cajun boy! Pros: consistent Cons: n/a more

WOW! 12/16/2008

The food was fab....the service was fab... we had to wait just a few minutes... but the place was packed all night... I loved that they don't rush you out... we were there for 2.5 hours.. having a wonderful experience... there were four of us... we all ordered something different and tasted each others.. we had a couple of bottles of great wine. I wish I could remember the names of everything we had... but trust me... you cant go wrong on what you order. I loved our waiter.. very much on the ball and we never waited for anything. Really you have to try this place... I know you will go back for more. This was our first time there.. it was a very short cab ride from the downtown Hilton. Pros: It is packed... but really we felt we were not on top of each other.. we felt like we were by ourselves tho there were many tables. more

To the people a couple posts below 11/25/2008

If you are looking for a good place to eat 'crawfish' perhaps one of the top fine-dining places in Portland isn't the best place to go. more

I don't know why I avoided this place! 10/9/2008

I don't know why....maybe because EVERYONE said it was great...maybe because it's been around since before time....but I never went to Jake's. I thought...ugh...old seafood place. But THIS PLACE BLEW MY MIND! The service for one, was some of the best I've EVER had. My boyfriend wasn't feeling well, and in spite of that -- he still thought it was the best food and service he'd had in years!!! We split everything (especially with american portions and the economy) and they didn't mind at all. We had the stuffed salmon - stuffed with crab and brie, mashed potatoes....all started with a great chowder....the whole night was wonderful and GREAT!!!! Can't say enough! GO! (make a reservation if you can though....we had a tiny bit of a wait, but spent our time at Cacao drinking chocolate around the corner...again....not a bad way to wait if you have to!) Pros: they have perfected the art of a great dining experience.... Cons: a wait...but not really a con if you go to Cacao.... more

Best happy hour 8/25/2008

The best happy hour in Portland, and great service too! We sat outside and was served by a waitress who was so fast so nice that her alone would put this restaurant on the map! And the food, in one word wonderful. Go there, just go and you tell me it's not the best place to eat for happy hour in Portland. Pros: Great food Cons: wish I lived next door. more

Great Seafood 7/19/2008

I felt prompted to write this review for two reasons: A) My family and I LOVE the food at Jake's Crawfish House and B) After reading the most recent review I felt the need to attempt to restore some dignity to the reputation of people from Louisiana. I was born and raised in Louisiana and certainly miss the crawfish boil restaurants where you sit at a paper-covered table and have countless pounds of crawfish, corn and potatoes served to you in a big plastic tray alongside pitchers of Miller Light. But to compare that type of restaurant to Jake's based on appearance is unfair. Jake's serves really great seafood in a lively atmosphere. Since moving here a year ago, we have eaten at Jake's several times. Last time we were there, my husband had the bisque, which was so delicious I regretted not ordering it myself. I had the crab and it was super fresh and tender. They do serve boiled crawfish, but I have never ordered it because other things on the menu look so good. Everything I have ever had here has been fresh, well-cooked and delicious. The service ranges from good to great, depending upon how busy the place is. Although PNW seafood is different than Louisiana seafood, it is just as tasty. If you are looking for a great seafood restaurant in Portland, then Jake's is the place to go. If you are looking for a traditional Louisiana crawfish boil, then I recommend doing as I do and visit Louisiana between March and June. more

NOT WHAT WE REALLY WANTED! 5/10/2008

WE ARE FROM LOUISIANA, BEEN LOOKING FOR A ""GOOD PLACE"" TO EAT CRAWFISH. WE SEEN THIS RESTURANT ONLINE, AND DECIDED WE WOULD GO. WE WALKED IN THE RESTURANT IT WAS REALLY DARK, (BUT IT WAS VERY NICE) WE WAS SEATED AT A NICE TABLE AND LOOKED AROUND WITH ONE QUESTION IN OUR MINDS... DO WE WANT TO EAT CRAWFISH HERE? WE ORDERED OUR DRINKS AND OUR 6 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER LOOKED AT US AND SAID, ""WE CANT EAT CRAWFISH HERE!!!"" SO WE JUST DECIDED TO JUST PAY FOR THE DRINKS AND GO SOMEWHERE ELSE BECAUSE WE FELT THAT IT WAS NOT ""A CRAWFISH EATING TYPE OF ENVIRONMENT."" NOT SAYING THAT THEY DONT HAVE GREAT FOOD & SERVICE, BUT IT WAS NOT OUR TYPE OF ENVIRONMENT. WE PROBABLY WOULD HAVE STAYED IF WE WAS IN THE MOOD FOR SOMETHING ELSE. WE ARE STILL TRYING TO GET USED TO THE WAY PEOPLE EAT AND COOK UP HERE. ITS NOTHING LIKE LOUISIANA BABY!! SO IF YALL WANT SOME GOOD CAJUN FOOD IN THE RIGHT ENVIRONMENT, THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE LOUISIANA.!!!! SORRY! Pros: CANT REALLY SAY... Cons: PARKING IS A PAIN more

Not so great happy hour 3/29/2008

My friends and I heard about the happy hour and so we decided to check this place out. We went on a Saturday night and it was really crowded. I really liked the atmosphere of the bar, but the happy hour menu was pretty bad. Besides the cheese burgers, everything else that we ordered wasn't very good. The oysters in the oyster shooters were the size of miniature clams and the buffalo wings were super salty. Although the pricing was really cheap and the atmosphere was nice, the food wasn't so great. I was disappointed. Pros: Easy to find, fast service, cheap happy hour menu Cons: Not so tasty food (on the happy hour menu) more
