Greens is my favorite restaurant hands down (I've eaten at a lot of great places too). It's very Californian and 100% vegetarian. The atmosphere is great too. The recipes are s...

Brunch was blah 10/1/2006

I've been hearing great things about Greens so my wife and I made a reservation for Sunday Brunch. The service was very friendly and we recieved a wonderful window seat. The menu looked superb and sounded delicious. The food was just plain boring. My wife's pinnacle scramble was nothing more than scrambled eggs with avacado next some bland black bean chili on top of a plain flour tortilla. My Grilled Brochettes were nothing beyond a backyard bbq vegi kebab, the cous cous they were served with was very tasty though. Prompt service, the coffee and mimosas were tasty but the main courses were really plain and did not live up to the hype or the menu description. Maybe Dinner is a different story? We're not going back, it's Millenium for our upscale Vegetarian dinners. Pros: nice view Cons: over hyped, bland food more

Great food - terrible service 8/21/2006

The service Friday night ruined what should have been a memorable evening. A couple drove up from Palo Alto to meet us to celebrate their engagement - our reservation for 6 was at 8:15 - we arrived at 8:25 so understood a slight wait for the table. We were put at a table in an alcove and promptly forgotten. At 9 pm no waiter no water - etc. I had to retrieve the waitress several times and she was openly curt to us. We complained to the manager and this did not help - we left and didn't have dessert because it was 11 pm. The food was good but the evening interminable and I felt bad for our guests. THe attitude the waitress expressed was shocking for a $ 300 plus tab. - Last: after we had had menus and decided on our food (at least 15 minutes) the waitress came in to say they didn't have several items so she left again while we rechose - more

Over Rated 4/3/2006

I enjoyed Greens, but for the price I do not think it was worth it. As a vegi it is nice to see a menu that is entirely vegetarian, however, I thought that the space had a institutional feel. PLUS the service was horrible, granted we arrived at 8:45 (the last reservation slot on a Friday night) to celebrate a birthday and it was like pulling teeth to get the waiter to serve us, the staff was rolling silverware at 9:30 and at one point I had to get up to ask for another glass of wine and a dessert menu, (we had only been there for 45 minutes-- it was not like we were hanging out ALL night) Nice to see a vegi menu, but the staff (like so many SF restaurants take away from the experience!!) more

Great Breakfast 12/19/2005

This is one of the best breakfasts in town. The food is fresh and beautifully presented. more

Great view good to fair food 11/16/2005

Ive been to Greens restaurant a few times once for dinner years ago and twice for lunch over the last 3 years and have always had a good vegetarian meal. Its not wow this is fantastic but its good and fresh- no grease here. It seems as though the atmosphere has become much more casual than it was years ago. The best thing about Greens is the view and on Mondays the main restaurant does not serve but patrons can buy food at the to go counter and sit at the tables in the restaurant and take advantage of this great view. There is no place that offers so much on a Monday afternoon. You can sit inside, have a great view, eat healthful food, and it is not expensive. Pros: view, welcome children Cons: service needs help more

Good but overpriced. Poor attention to detail. B- 10/3/2005

My husband and I ate at Greens tonight for our anniversary. We like the idea of eating at an upscale vegetarian restaurant, but we were dissapointed by the mediocre service and lackluster food. For the price on the menu, we expected much more. The bus staff kept our water glasses full but failed to notice missing silverware. The waiter had good wine recommendations but (oops!) delivered the wine after the food. The flavor combinations were wonderful, but my meal was slightly undercooked in every respect. The dessert was very good but served at the wrong tempurature (cold bread pudding?). These missing details take away from the experience and leave you feeling gouged. B- Pros: gourmet vegetarian, good wine list, prompt service Cons: overpriced, poor attn to detail more

Nothing to write home about! 10/2/2005

Major disappointment! We went for brunch on our wedding anniversary. In addition to a mediocre menu, and pee wee portion size, the ambience was no great shakes. Apparently they were looking for the smallest portabellos in this weeks Farmer's market, because the sandwich was almost non-existent. At these prices we expected at least complimentary breadstix or a small muffin basket or how 'bout that pat of butter? Go Yankees! Pros: found parking, nice waitress, love the tree stump Cons: boring menu , mediocre food , touristy more

Good Food Not Great 7/25/2005

A good vegetarian Restaurant - I've eaten here many times. The food is good, but not great. It's extreamly overpriced. There are so many more vegetarian restaurants in SF that serve great food, at half the cost, but don't have the view. This is great for special occasions. Pros: View Cons: Price more

Vegetarian Delight 6/26/2005

An institution that is great for a romantic vegetarian dining experience more

Great experience 1/23/2005

We recently took some out of towners to Greens for dinner. We had two vegetarians in the group and four carnivores. Everyone enjoyed their meal, the location and the service. However, it is fairly expensive for vegetarian cuisine...but when you consider that the food is locally grown, that the location is beautiful and interesting and that it is quiet enough to have a normal conversation without screaming..it all seems worth it. more

Consistently Amazing 5/2/2004

I've been to Greens repeatedly over the last 5 years, and I have never had a bad experience. The Saturday prix fixe dinners are the best and are definitely worth the price. The servers and hosts have always been more than helpful...even when we arrived late for our reservations. Vegan options are always available! more

wouldn't miss it 11/6/2003

We started coming here when we were vegetarians, and kept on coming when we went back to meat. Makes you wonder why anyone would eat meat at all. Chef Somerville is a whiz. It seems like she never repeats herself. The view speaks for itself, and great, g reat service. more

great birthday dinner! 9/7/2003

My hubby and I went for my 30th birthday dinner. Had a fabulous meal and evening! Everything was fresh and tasty. We asked that our corn-on-the-cob appetizer be served off-the-cob, and our waiter was gracious about it; the chef even made it look pretty. My ravioli was splendid, with delicious little tomatoes and pine nuts. And the wine was great. And our desserts were sublime. And even the decaf latte was delicious! Pros: fresh & tasty, lovely space, diverse clientele Cons: hard chairs, close seating, I don't live in SF! more

Food good not great/Friendly staff 8/24/2003

Recently we took some visiting friends for lunch. They're not vegetarians but still enjoyed their meals. The food was not as good as I expected....GOOD just not GREAT for the prices they charge. The amount of food was smallish. The menu was limited; we wished we would have ordered take out since take-out had a larger or at least more appealing selection of food. The views are lovely and the ambience is quite nice. I was happy to see that the other diners were all shapes and ages. There were a couple of large groups of people as well as 5 or 6 families with young children. The wait staff couldn't have been more pleasant or helpful. We would definitely eat there again keeping in mind that it is not cheap; ($100 for 5 people for simple lunch; which included a 20+% tip)at least for average wage earners. Pros: Lovely ambience, Great views, Friendly staff Cons: Pricey ! more

Sigh 3/8/2003

I made 6pm reservations a month in advance for my girlfriend's birthday. Told manager it was important to have window seating, hence the 6pm reservation. Went in, was seated in the middle of the restaurant even though window seating avbl. Asked for table change and was denied. Reminded mgr of girlfriend's birthday, he said, ""Yes, I know."" no mention of it the entire dinner. If i'm going to an upscale place like this I expect something. Although, our waiter was awesome. Pros: Wait Staff, Desserts, Wine Selection Cons: Pretentious, Birthday ignored, People wearing jeans! more

good food with a view 1/30/2003

the food was very good. would recommend to a friend. was voted the cleanest restaurant in the bay area on TV. ended up eating food i would normally not eat because it tasted sooooo goood! Pros: quiet, good food, good parking more

over-rated, uninspiring, expensive dish 1/19/2003

I don't understand why this is rated so highly. It is extremely expensive and an uninspiring menu. While the produce is fresh, the dishes are entirely unoriginal. Think: college food co-op. All the starters were salads. Salads!!!! If you want good, vegetarian fare, go to Herbivore. It's a much better value. I went on Saturday night for their ""4 course"" prix-fixed. The first course was BREAD. BREAD! and Butter!!! All for over $45/person. SAVE YOUR MONEY and TIME. go somewhere else. Pros: good view Cons: over-priced, uninspiring, bad-value more

Great view but... 1/6/2003

Greens is one of those place you just have to go for the view and the ambience even though you're not a vegetarian. it's one of those restaurant with the best represent the new age/zen characteristic of S.F. The food however it's just okay. I'm not a vegeterian but I was expecting more spices and exotic seasoning from this place...and better the presentation. I recommend to go there for a light lunch or healthy bunch. and make sure to ask for a table by the window when you make your reservation. Pros: Great view, lot of parking Cons: bland seasoning more

Classy Veggie 12/29/2002

Although Greens typically uses a fair amount of dairy, the chefs are amazingly accomadating and personable. As a vegan asking about non-dairy options when I made my reservation, I was transeferred to the head chef who spoke with me about what adjustments they could make for me. Enjoying vegan food accompanied by wine from a varied and award-winning wine list, in a dining room with one of the best views ever, was an experience in a class of its own. Pros: accomodating, fabulous wine list, unsurpassable views more

old hats 12/8/2002

So greens is pretty good and they've been around the longest, but they cater their veg. cuisine to meat eaters with their heavy use of creams, butter and not-so-healthy options to make it taste great to the majority of people, but by sacrificing the healthiness most people associate with vegetarian cusine. its also not so friendly to the vegan subset. more
