Greens Restaurant

I am so glad that I was not the one paying for dinner, because I would have refused to. We got 2 appetizers, the squash blossoms and the spring rolls. The blossoms were obviously frozen and chewy. These were something you would get at Applebees , they were basically bland jalapeno poppers. The spring rolls were paired with the wrong garnishments. One of my friends paid $17 dollars for a ten inch pizza with nothing special about it. The veggetables were not fresh, and the cheeses were nothing special. \r My other friends got the green curry, which had good flavor but was not spicey, as they requested. And it was cold. Worst of all by far was my ""fettucini"" the sauce was runny, there were only tomoatoes and flakes of basil and EGG NOODLES. Like cheap, sticky egg noodles that come in the giant bag at the grocery store. I will never eat here again, and I will tell all my friends not to waste their time and money. Greens is my favorite restaurant hands down (I've eaten at a lot of great places too). It's very Californian and 100% vegetarian. The atmosphere is great too. The recipes are seemingly simple, but usually has quite a lot of flavor. And the execution is always great. I wouldn't recommend Greens for brunch. But it might be the best vegetarian meal you sit down to. A lot of dishes are very rich. But it's a nice treat on occasion. A guaranteed spot to please in San Francisco. Very pleasant and unusual place. Wood all over the restaurant, view on the Marina (not the tourist one, the one in West North Beach).\r \r It is a vegetarian restaurant and it is definitively a trip in the ""Taste world"".\r \r We were 4 and shared all the dishes (yes, the swine flue fear is gone for now) so we all got to test 4 very different styles.\r \r All the 4 dishes were good to very good and all were original in their presentation and taste.\r \r Highly recommended if you like the mix of good View, Good food, good service and original atmosphere. I remember Green's when it was unique, interesting, and there were always items on the menu that were fresh and exciting. That was then. I still go back periodically, but have been disappointed every time. It seems that Green's is coasting along, still bringing in customers, but not producing anything resembling cutting-edge dining. It's a shame. Without it's location, I'm guessing the restaurant wouldn't survive. Today, I found the menu to be dull, the food lackluster and bland, the service friendly but very spotty (I waited a long time for our server to check in after presenting entrees, which never happened, and finally flagged her down to ask her to add items listed for my entree on the menu but missing from the plate). Not particularly acceptable, especially given the prices.\r \r This mediocre experience was capped off by having a staff member ask us to vacate our table at 1 hour and 45 minutes, as we were preparing to leave anyway (notably there were a number of empty tables and there were only a few people waiting - the request was a mystery).\r \r Overall, my 3-star rating feels like a bit of a gift. Green's has done, and can do, much better. more

To set the stage, my wife is mostly vegan and I am not. I stray on the side of whole foods and eat a lot less meat because of her. \r \r The location seems very difficult to get to. You need to go inside the military base to get there ... it is not very visible.\r \r The atmosphere needs some help. There are large windows facing the bay and has a really good view of the bridge, but the interior is stale. There are some cool wood tables that are sculptured as tables and seating, but they are about the only thing that adds any uniquenesses to the area -- the rest is standard fare.\r \r The service was OK ... we waited for periods where I was wondering why we were waiting. Our seating was very early in the night so I guess they were just ramping up, but still it was not at all informative or very hospitable.\r \r We had a sampler which was good. There were a couple of things that did not go together - especially a chutney in the center that didn't seem to go with the sampler even though it was good. I can't say I recommend it.\r \r My wife had the enchiladas which was a departure for her. She was very excited to go to this restaurant and I could tell she was not happy. We switched meals about 3/4 of the way in because I could see her disappointment and I wanted her to try something else. So, I can tell you my experience with what she got -- it was awful. It reminded me of a Lean Cuisine meal -- bad, tasteless and lifeless.\r \r I had the Mushroom and Leek Filo dinner and it was pretty good. If I remember correctly it was surrounded by Italian butter beans which were a fond reminder of my southern heritage. It was good, but a little lacking in flavor. This our habitual favorite San Francisco restaurant. Great food, lovely views, fair prices and good service.\r The seasonal menu is delicious and the wines are interesting and well priced. Window seats are especially appreciated but can be a bit warm in direct lunchtime sun. Pros: Great food and views. Interesting people watching too. Cons: Can be alittle noisy and warm if in the direct sun. more

This used to be a truly great place. Not anymore, folks. Indifferent, annoyed service by people who seem unhappy to be there. Food is served cold after clearly sitting around, and no one seems to care. The menu reads interestingly, but the food is uninteresting, mainstream, and WAY overpriced. They're living on their past legacy. This is definitely no longer one of SF's special places. Really. Sacred cow is right. Our chef roomie said it was overpriced and unspectacular, but we went anyway, and sure enough, we were underwhelmed. The waiter was condescending and kept confusing our request for no eggs as a request for no dairy. It took him a trip to the kitchen to get info, and even then, we were confused. The tables were packed together. The food lacked: the portions were a tad small, the seasonings didn't hang together, and the flavor combinations were just not quite right. Good food is good food, and this wasn't it. I've been vegetarian for 35 years, and I guess I've been spoiled by the fabulous veggie cooks among my friends. The view is nice, though, which is good because the decor was very plain, dominated by posters of vegetables done unartistically. \r \r The first appetizer is a tiny dish of oily toasted almonds. We ordered 3 other appetizers. The cheese plate had only one kind of cheese (camembert?) but it was correctly ripe. The Sampler plate had hummus and a filo-cheese wrap (only one) that were good. The spinach salad was edible. We then ordered 4 entrees. The brochette is shish kebab of veggies and tofu on a bed of couscous and sauce, but the tofu just tasted like burned plain tofu. The ravioli were limp and flat with a green filling that just needed something. The goat cheese pizza was pretty good--actually the crust was light and crisp and the toppings were good--but it was small. The so-called curry barely registered on the ""curry"" flavor scale, although it had coconut milk in it, always a plus. The rice with the curry was crunchy underdone--a cardinal sin with rice, and totally unexpected in a restaurant of this reputation. I wish people wouldn't attempt ""ethnic"" food unless they understand it--or at least know how to cook rice.\r \r We didn't even want to risk ordering a dessert. I suggest buying the cookbook, making the food yourself, and having a picnic overlooking the bay on your own. The food is good, but it wouldn't be hard to prepare, and the service is absolutely terrible. After waiting for our table for 30 minutes, we asked the hostess why we hadn't been seated yet, and she hadn't even put us in the machine! Our waitress also left quite a bit to be desired, delivering us the wrong food, and altogether forgetting to bring us the bread we had ordered. Every time they had a chance to screw something up, they did. Buy the cookbook online and save yourself the trouble of hassling with their poor service. Wonderful food! We had the cheese plate and the red curry (weird combo, I know). The cheese was scrumptious, although I'd hoped for a bit more salad with it. The curry was filling and flavorful, without being too spicy. Service was friendly but a little slow, but the food and the view made it worth it! I only wish I'd had an emptier stomach for dessert! more

Fantastic choices and perfect veiws. I had my 25th birthday at Greens and everything went like a dream. The little fried zucchini appetizers are to die for. The risotto cakes are so so good. I wish they would bring them back. I also wish I lived closer to Greens so I could go more often! If you haven't given Greens a shot, you should. It's killer! more

Went on a Saturday night and had the four course meal with wine matching. We sat at table by the window with view of the bridge and sun setting. It was amazing. We were treated well and the wine kept coming and the food was always good ? for all 4 courses. more

We went for my birthday on a Saturday night and had to wait 15 min. for our Reserved table. Our hard, cold bread came immediately after our starter, followed by our appetizers less than 2 minutes later, so we barely had a chance to try either. Once our main entree arrived, we didn?t see our server again until she came to ask us what we wanted for dessert. The food was decent, but definitely not worth the price for even the prix fixe menu; especially since they charged us extra for coffee. The service was sub-par and impersonal as we were served sporadically by no less than 5 people during the meal. Also, my girlfriend checked her account, and they added their own $7 illegal gratuity to the bill above what she signed for. If you like to dine at pretentious, dishonest restaurants, pay out your ?ear? for standard food, and pay for parking?enjoy! We will NOT be going back! Pros: The view is the only thing going for this place. Cons: Too pricey. Pretentious staff really didn't make an effort. VERY uncomfortable chairs! more

My husband and I have been going to Greens for years. We've celebrated many special occasions there and even dined there when we got engaged. Even though we aren't vegetarians we love this place. The food is always excellent and the wait staff is very knowlegeable, efficient and friendly. I recently went there for a good friend's birthday and as expected everything was great except for one thing. Our table was in probably the worst spot on the whole dining floor. It was right at the entrance of the dining area and also where the kitchen was. There was constant foot traffic going past our table ... people being seated, wait staff picking up their orders, etc. I know that I can't always expect the best table in the restaurant when I walk in but I expected a little more consideration since I made the reservation almost a month in advance. There seems to be plenty of open space for them to move this table to a more intimate location. more

The first time I was here, I had a wonderful experience and the food was fantastic. That day, I took my brother-in-law and her wife there and we had reservation. My wife called to confirm hours before. When we got there, they said we didn't have a reservation and can't give us a table anymore. So we argued with them a little and later found our reservation. However, they still made us waited for at least half an hour. I think they are overbooking and poor organization.\r \r The food on that day was so-so. The service was no longer as good as it use to be. Our server were unattentive. We had to ask other server several times to get our server to get service. He's never around when you need him and takes forever to have your menu taken and also to pay the bill.\r \r Another change since last time is that they no longer offer free parking. There are plenty of parking at Fort Masion since they are the only one in business at night. And what's worst, they don't even validate parking for you. Parking is $6 there. $6 is not too much considering it's SF, but the place wasn't busy and the lot was empty. They could have offered free like the past. In addition, the person at the front desk said it's about $2 or so. I guess they don't know too much even though they work there.\r more

Greens is a great place to have a casual lunch or dinner out, but it's also a good place to have a special night on the town because the food is fabulous and the service is incredible. Our waiter knew which wine we should order with our meals and the rest of the staff was very friendly. My non-veg boyfriend even said it was great! Sacred cow of upscale vegetarian restaurants? What? Perhaps in Hicksville, Idaho. \r My husband and I went for brunch on Sunday afternoon expecting something magnificent. Something that only 20 years of San Francisco restaurant-teering could supply. We were disappointed. \r The menu promised exotic, mouth-watering vegetarian fare. Extraordinary dishes with flavor-bursting descriptions. I read every item nearly TWICE trying to decide. \r I should have taken a hint from the 4th grade art on the walls... these people are beginners. \r I finally settled on the Pinnacle Scramble. This is what I was promised: Scrambled eggs with roasted yellow finn potatoes, poblano and chipotle chilies, scallions, Vermont cheddar and cilantro. Served on warm corn tortillas with fire roasted salsa, black bean chili and crème fraiche.\r This is what I got: scrambled eggs with scallions and corn sitting on top of 2 soggy flour tortillas topped with jarred salsa and fresh avocado. On the side - what tasted like vegetarian Hormel chili and the stringiest crème fraiche I've ever had. \r My husband opted for the Mesquite Grilled Brochettes of mushrooms, peppers, yellow finn potatoes, red onions, fennel, cherry tomatoes and marinated tofu with charmoula. Served with cherry-pistachio couscous.\r The kebabs were flavorless, save for the little slices of corn cob (which are not mentioned in the description... excess of corn?). The tofu were giant bricks of untreated, unmarinated soy. Nearly straight out of the package. Who eats tofu like that? However, the couscous did have a memorable, sweet flavor that was unexpected. Not enough to save the meal, though. \r A few saving graces: the view, the generous mimosas and the peculiar, yet nice wait staff.
