Editorial review from GrubHub 1/31/2013

Have ordered here a few times, and the delivery is quick. Maybe a few things on the menu are good, but whatever you do, do *not* order the fish sandwich. The fish isn't fresh--in fact, mine smelled. The fries are just okay, and the wings here are nothing exciting. (If you like em hot, look elsewhere.) Sorry, but can't recommend Duke's. more

Good local place for drinks and eats 11/10/2010

I've eaten there about a dozen times. The food is consistently good and the atmosphere is always fun and lively. Definitely recommend for small and large parties. more

Can you see me now? 2/9/2010

My boyfriend and I walked into the restaurant when it was COMPLETELY DEAD, and the hostess was not at the front, so we sat ourselves trying to find someone who looked like they were there and were working. All the while there were three women- cocktail servers and a bartender watching us seat ourselves and seeing us look around for menus. No one budged to help or even looked like they wanted to help. We had to get up and find the hostess who was staring into space at that point at the front desk. Even when we asked for menus she said nothing and just smiled and stared down while handing one for the two of us. This hostess was also our waitress, lucky us, and gave bare bones service if it can be given that much credit. I work in the industry and know that first impressions are everything. If the service at the front of the house stinks, everything else no matter if they make the best food on this side of town (which they don't), will seem horrible to match. Just to give everyone a heads up. Pros: above average burger Cons: horrific service more

good place 5/10/2009

I've been there 20 or so times.. Food taste is consistent. Things to try in order. 1. Angus burger 2. Calamari 3. Nachos 4. Curly fries Pros: beer selection, food Cons: cant find any more

Bait and Switch Restaurant! Beware! 10/25/2008

I have been to Dukes with my gf multiple times and have taken friends there. The food has always been fairly standard BBQ fair, but one of the reasons we keep coming back is that they host some pretty decent ""special deals"" where you can get cheaper meals or deals on the meals... Of course, following an email blast I get from them, I check out their website to see what they have as a special deal and I find that they offer a free pitcher of beer for every 2 combo meals you order... So since I was with a group of 4 we decide this is a great deal... I even print out the website page offering this deal as proof... We go to the restaurant, I specifically tell the waitress we plan to do the combo/beer deal, she's on board, we order the pitchers, and sure enough when the bill comes it doesnt discount for the pitchers... so i show her the print out, she gives it to the manager, and the manager (a very inconsiderate woman at best) explains that this is an old deal and that it does not apply anymore... ok, maybe it is but i printed it off your own website TODAY! maybe you should honor your deals! I go to talk to her and she is unbudging and shoo's me away and offers me scratch off coupons for a next visit. personally, if you want a cheaper BBQ meal, go to Dallas BBQ, and if you want a more upbeat and nicer experience go to Blue Smoke... Duke's is a bait and switch all the way. more

Worst chicken fried steak 1/24/2008

I have not eaten at this location but my office ordered lunch from Duke's today. I had the chicken fried steak, but it should really be called batter fried steak with a hint of steak. I have never seen such a think slice of steak on this dish. The amount of batter was at least 5 times thicker. And for a cost of $15, it is a rip off.\r \r Maybe other dishes are great, I only speak from my experience today with this one dish. more

Duke's has no aristocratic pretension 7/24/2007

I understand the vibe they were trying for is casual/rustic but it came accross as poorly furnished and lacking any sense of ambience in it's decor. The crowd tends to be just people stopping in for a quick meal in groups. Not a place to linger or mingle. The menu choice was not varied enough and the food was just tasty enough to be edible but barely enjoyed. more

Skip It! 1/20/2007

Poor service. The waiters don't make rounds to refill water, even when I asked for water to be refilled, the pitcher didn't have enough water for a full glass. The person I later asked to refill my glass didn't speak English. For some reason my table wasn't given a basket of bread, although all the other tables were. The music was only radio and interfered with the atmosphere. Skip it. more

Bad service, good food. 12/19/2006

While the staff are semi-friendly, they are also extremely lazy. It took forever to get my waitress' attention last night since she was sitting with the rest of the staff at a booth talking and paying no attention to her tables. The food was pretty good but I probably wouldn't return because of the service. Pros: tasty food Cons: Bad service more

Slow, indifferent brunch service 12/10/2006

We stopped in for brunch on a pretty crowded afternoon because the brunch prices were better than most in the neighborhood. While we waited for a table to open up, I ordered two bloody marys. The bartender said ""I'm not sure how much that is,"" did something on the register screen, and said ""that's 16.25."" I said ""so they're 8 dollars and 12 and a half cents apiece?"" ""Yep!"" She clearly added something we didn't order, but since she didn't understand math, it seemed perfectly reasonable to her.\r \r Our omelet plates only cost 75 cents more than our drinks, but they took forever to come out. In the meantime, the waitress didn't bring the included biscuits and strawberry jam. When our omelets came and still no biscuits, I asked her if we could get the biscuits, and she said ""sure"" as if I had just asked for ketchup. She brought out little blueberry muffins, sans jam, and said without apology that they were out of the biscuits.\r \r Then the bill took forever and we left... forever. Pros: The food was fine, if not always what we ordered. Cons: Indifferent service, overcharged for drinks, didn't tell us they didn't have something we ordered until we asked about it. more

Not Impressed 11/30/2006

Yes, the decor is kind of cute and kitschy (especially the Trivial Pursuit cards on your table to play with), but only the very best BBQ can convince me to sit and eat in this kind of place. Brother Jimmy's is a good example. This is not. Anyone who knows me will tell you I am not a picky eater, but the crabcake sandwich I was served tasted absolutely bizarre. I ended up eating the fries and about half of my husband's beef brisket (which was also subpar- think Dallas BBQ, not Jimmy's or Virgil's). Don't bother. more

Best BBQ 11/17/2006

Nice place for lunch. Sometimes gets a little noisy but the food is great and the atmosphere is nice. Look for coupons in NYC AMNews! Pros: Great BBQ and other homestyle comfort foods Cons: Gets a bit noisy more

Great lunch spot 11/13/2006

We go here for lunch and the food is never disappointing. I always get the po boy sandwich and it's great every time. It's definitely a fun spot. more

OH YEAH BABY NOW THERE IS TWO LOCATIONS. JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT LIFE COULDNT GET ANY BETTER. I LIVE BY THE OTHER LOCATION BUT I'LL STILL CHECK OUT THIS DOWNTOWN SPOT WHEN I'M HEADING DOWNTOWN. Pros: TASTE GREAT Cons: CROWDED, NEEDS ANOTHER REST ROOM more

good comfort food 9/11/2006

our party of 8 came here on sunday night. i had previously been to earls (dukes spawn restaurant), and found duke pretty much the same, only better. the decor was the same and the menu shares most of the same items. our server was pretty nice (unlike our inattentive server at earls) and brought our drinks very quickly. she was ok with the drink refills too, but i dont think that she cleared a single glass during the entire night we had a table full of empty glasses at the end of the meal.\r \r we started off with orders of family sized buffalo wings, nachos, and piggly wigglys (pigs in blankets). i didnt try the wings, but they disappeared quickly so i think that they were good. the nachos came sans chili (they were out of it), but i actually preferred the bean-less version anyway it was loaded with chunky guacamole, a few different types of cheeses, salsa, and ground beef. it was also served very hot and the chips tasted like they had just come out from a vat of hot oil. very good. the piggly wigglys were very miniature, but very tasty.\r \r for my main course, i ordered the small mac & cheese ($7) & the house salad ($6). the others had various sandwiches or burgers. my mac & cheese was really good it had a crunchy top and the inside wasnt too gooey or watery. we also used it as a medium for experimenting with the 6 different hot sauces on the table. they were mostly too hot for me, but it was a lot of fun nonetheless. of the sandwiches, the roadhouse (i think that was what it was called) was especially good chicken fried steak on a toasted bun with avocado, lettuce, tomato, & a creamy sauce. all of the sandwiches came with a small cup of slaw and a pile of (slightly limp) shoestring fries. we were too stuffed for dessert. overall, i liked this place better than earls due to slightly better food and way better service. Pros: inexpensive, large portions, good comfort food Cons: limp fries, only ok service more

Good Food, Not Enough Bathrooms, Too Many Meat Heads... 9/8/2006

I had the Roadhouse sandwich, which is a recipe for cardiac arrest but tasted pretty damn good. My lovely date had the chicken sandwich and described it as ""Juicy"", although she said the BBQ sauce was a little too watery. The fries were good, but they were not hot enough when served. They have various hot sauces available for your tasting pleasure.\r \r The atmosphere is that of a typical pop-up BBQ joint with license plates and Chili contest photos decorating the wood walls. I'm not sure if it was just because it was a Saturday night during college football season, but the place was packed with frat-like meat heads who were either alumns of Texas/Georgia/S. Carolina/Ohio St. or had some serious cash on the games. Needless to say, it wasn't a quiet night.\r \r They need to install some new toilets. They only have one toilet for men and one for women. Not a great idea when the client base is made up of college football fans who are sucking down Lone Star beers. Pros: Decent food, good hot sauce selection Cons: Too many meat heads, not enough toilets more

Disapointing food and service to say the least. 8/14/2006

To start, I have to say that I am from the south and do have high expectations regarding barbecue. I was not expecting the best that I have ever had but in a city with such discriminating taste, I certainly was expecting good at least. First, we are seated promptly and given one menu for two people because they didnt have enough. This was a dead Monday night by the way. I had the pulled pork and ribs, baked beans, cole slaw, and collard greens. The food was warm at best, ribs were dry and rubber like, the pulled pork was cooked to death and drowned in to much sauce, the baked beans were crunchy, the cole slaw lacks any real flavor other than mayo, the greens were decent. My girl had the ribs and chicken combo with fries and sweet potato. She to was not very impressed with her food either. Same on ribs as above, chicken tasted like it was cooked several days before we got there, the sweet potato wasn't far from raw, and last but not least were the fries. they were over-cooked several hours before we got there and looked terrible. When I told the waitress we needed fresh fries she wanted to take the entire plate of food away just to give us good fries( remember the food wasn't hot to begin with) and this was not acceptable. So I grabbed the fries with my hand, put them in a napkin, and slapped them in the waitresses hand and told her to get the fresh fries now. Now, I work in the restaurant industry myself and am not a very tolerant person in regards to bad service and food. This place excells in both. I think I will open a real southern barbecue joint here, and if I do, Dukes is screwed. DON'T EVER GO!!! Pros: COOL TRAILER PARK Cons: EVERYTHING ELSE. AND I DO MEAN EVERYTHING more
