Good for two, bad for large groups 7/16/2007

I enjoyed going to this restaurant a few times with my girlfriend. The food was very good both times and we decided to share our find with some friends from work. Unfortunately, when we went with a group unfriendly service ruined our experience. Although we had a reservation the hostess made it clear that we were not particularly welcome. She did not recognize that the reservation even existed until we provided a confirmation number. Once we got our table it was not worth the trouble. I was disappointed to have such a bad experience at a restaurant that I had previously enjoyed and would not recommend eating here with groups of more than four people. more

Cafeteria Food 5/8/2007

The food can only be described as Cafeteria Food. Noisy, out of towners, sloppy, dirty. The food actually tasted more like it came out of a can or was frozen than cooked by a chef. This is not barbeque, as I know it. more

Great appetizers, great drinks, great ribs 5/7/2007

I was with a group of 40 which means we usually get mediocre service and cool food. We had great service and great food. They have an amazing smoky blue cheese martini. The chicken wings and sliders were terrific appetizers. The beef ribs were some of the best but the babyback ribs are better than anything I've had in Memphis or Kansas City. The smoke is genuine and not bottled. You get a good whiff of it as you walk into the restaurant. BBQ fans, NYC has the genuine article. Pros: Ribs,Food, and Drinks Cons: Waiting in line without reservations would be the only con I could see more

Best Beef Ribs 3/29/2007

I hesitate to write such a glowing review b/c I fear the restaurant will become too popular. I went to dinner there this past Saturday night and it was fabulous. I have no idea what all of these bad reviews are about. I don't eat pork, so my options were limited. The beef ribs are so flavorful, the sweet potato fries are fresh and tender. My mother had the fried chicken and she thought it was the best she's tasted below 110th street. We both enjoyed the apple crisp, as well as the fried pear & cranberry pie. All of the food we tasted was not over powered or over-seasoned. All in all I have to add it to my guilty pleasures list! more

Overpriced, inauthentic and average 2/26/2007

I love BBQ and, in my opinion, it takes a lot to screw it up. A fan of Virgils, I wanted to try something new and heard good things about Blue Smoke. Unfortunately, I was disappointed from the start. Pros: It's an average meal--not up to NYC par Cons: Food, Value, Service more

I love BBQ and, in my opinion, it takes a lot to screw it up. A fan of Virgils, I wanted to try something new and heard good things about Blue Smoke. Unfortunately, I was disappointed from the start. First the service: I am not sure what the hostess or waiter expects but people eating BBQ are probobly not looking for an "exclusive" night out so they would fare well to drop the whole "VIP" facade. No matter how pricy or well-known the restaurant, when it has neon signs and serves Mac-N-Cheese there's a cap on how much attitude you can expect guests to handle. Food: I found the Mac-N-Cheese bland, the hush puppies overcooked and served with something that tasted like jam and the ribs were fatty. The Brisket was cold and their fries came with something that resembled cheese whiz. My friends and I ordered a plethora of food and created our own little "Tasting menu" only to feel like it was all sub-par and empty calories. No fun for a splurge. Value: Let's not kid ourselves, it's all overpriced in NYC but this place doesn't even attempt to give you a decent value for your Washingtons ;) For better BBQ, go to Virgils or make your own. Blue Smoke is just not worth it. Pros: It's an average meal--not up to NYC par Cons: Food, Value, Service more

  • Danny Meyer's sprawling, wood-trimmed barbecue joint, with its oversized booths, showpiece bar and late-night jazz club in the basement, is a hot spot for casual work lunches and fun nights on the town. Crowds pour in, and service is friendly and knowledgeable. The moderately priced menu features upscale comfort food, but only enough to showcase the high-quality ingredients and interesting pairings. The food is fun and unfussy, as creamy deviled eggs and hush puppies with jalapeno-marmalade prove. Pulled pork, though nothing like Carolina's versions, is chunky, chewy, with just enough smoke, while spice-rubbed and sauce-slathered ribs (best enjoyed as a sampler) feature fat-streaked, mostly tender pork and beef.
