I was expecting a lot after all the hype and Best-Ofs and Critic's Picks, but was severely disappointed. My pulled pork lacked any discernible flavor and necessitated a serious do...

Blue Smoke is all I smoke 10/29/2006

I have been to this place many times before writing this review, and for whatever reason have failed to write about my great dinning experiences there. My last visit to Blue Smoke was last week with a bunch boys from work. We were seated promptly after arriving around 6pm without a reservation by a friendly and attentive hostess. Before going into the food, the decor is simple yet homey and Southern feeling. Classic wood floors and tables, high ceilings, and a huge bar with great beer and specialty liquor selection from around the world. The food is absolutely great!! The different styles of ribs offered is great for people who have different likings. Slow cooked, tender, juicy, and not full of fake liquid smoke-these ribs are the real deal. The pulled pork along with the chicken where full of flavor and not dried out at all. The sides offered where both original and inventive. The hot BBQ chips w/ blue cheese dip is amazing, and the Mac n' cheese is thick, creamy, and unbelievably cheesy!! Another great dish was the sausage sampler for an appetizer with the stone ground mustard. The price of Blue Smoke was not expensive but not cheap-definitely worth the price. The service was on point and up to speed-we never felt rushed or uncomfortable by the waiter's presence. The noise can be a little loud when dinning during prime time dinner hours-this place does do a lot of business and is usually packed with people at the bar and people waiting for a table. They only reserve half the dinning room and leave the other half available for walk-ins, so if you go early enough-you won't need a reservation!! Unfortunately, I have never had enough room for desert when dining at Blue Smoke, but I am sure it is up there with the rest of their food. Blue Smoke is a must if you are ever in New York City! Pros: BBQ, service, drink menu Cons: crowded, noisy more

Another good BBQ place in the city 9/30/2006

Having been to Nashville to sample real BBQ and then after eating at RUB and the Daisy May's lunch stand, I think Blue Smoke is a pretty good place. We started with Iced Tea, and the cool thing here is that they give you a small pitcher of simple syrup instead of sugar to sweeten the tea. We shared a plate of chicken wings and while the sauce was good, I prefer my wings fried more for a crispier texture so that I don't taste any rubberiness of the skin. We decided to share a sampler plate, hush puppies and mac-n-cheese. The mac-n-cheese is unbelievable - creamy, decandent and delicious. The hush puppies are good - crispy outside and fluffy inside and the jalepeno jam is a nice accompaniment. The funny things is that the best hush puppies Ive ever had are from a BBQ place inside Moeghan Sun up in Conn. The sampler came with chicken, sausage, pulled pork and ribs. The pulled pork was moist and tasty. The ribs were meaty and full of juicy flavor. They only give one piece of sausage but it is spicy and tasty. The chicken wasn't that great. It was kind of bland and forgetable. For dessert we ordered a vanilla milkshake, apple crisp and sticky toffee pudding. The kitchen was cool and split the shake into 2 glasses for us. It was very good. The apple crisp was good and met my expectations. The toffee pudding stole the show. It was more like a bundt cake with a puddingish inside - it was delicious. Overall, for all of this food, the bill was only $75 and the staff was extremely friendly and accomodating. Pros: Good BBQ, good service Cons: Nothing major more

A fun vibe 9/7/2006

Even though the food isnt the best BBQ, this place is always a treat. THe service is slow, but the one time the wait for my desert was long-they comped it. That spoke volumes to me about how they care about their customers. THe pulled pork really is the best that i have had in the city. And the bar scene helps pass the time as you wait....and wait..... Pros: Great times, good vibe Cons: the wait is long more

Overrated and really BAD Customer Service 7/27/2006

I was on the phone for a long time being put on hold by them. I heard about this place through reviews but had to experience it myself. They had awful service and seemed very cocky. DO NOT go there. No matter how good the food is, with terrible customer service, it's intolerable. The guy didn't even apologize and his excuse was "We get a lot of phone calls all the time." So be it. Their prices are expensive too. Pros: Semi-decent food Cons: Terrible service, poorly taste decor more

Big hat, no cattle 7/7/2006

Down in Texas, when someone is more hype than substance, we say they have a big hat but no cattle. Well, that's blue smoke. It's plenty fancy, but the food just isn't very good. It's dry. It's tasteless. It's expensive. I can't figure out how they make any money. Down in TX, that place would close within a month. more

Not that I've found good bbq in this town yet, but there's some okay places at least. But Blue Smoke ain't one of them. more

My friends & I love this place! 6/1/2006

My friends and I get together at Blue Smoke as often as we can as we can't live without the blood orange margaritas and ribs! Best low-carb diet I can think of. Sweet potato fries and other sides are also really yummy. Only downside is that you can't just go on a whim as always packed and can't get seated until after 8pm or so. Best to make a reservation approx. one week in advance to ensure seating and time you want. Believe me, this place is worth checking out. Pros: Food, Drinks, Service Cons: Need reservations more

Meh 5/16/2006

Upon walking in I was assaulted by displays selling T-shirts at the bar, making me feel like I had just walked into a tourist attraction. The food was not bad, but not great. The waiter insisted that the "marbled" version of my dish would add to the flavor, but it really just tasted like a fatty piece of meat. Although the staff is super-friendly, and the main dining area is spacious enough to accommodate large groups, I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. more

EXCELLENT!!! 3/28/2006

I here with my family to celebrate 3 special occasions. We waited 15 min for our table to be ready, not that long for a Sunday night. As we sat down, the manager and server came to our table with complimentary apps to thank us for our patience! WOW! Our server was fantastic & the food was amazing. The manager kept coming over (who was adorable to boot!) to make sure we were great. We had a 2 year old with us and they actually had her decorate her very own cookie which they baked at the end of the meal for her. I work in this industry and have never seen such attentive service. I highly recommend Blue Smoke, especially for groups and even more so, it is so hard to bring a young child into a trendy restaurant and they made it so easy!!! more

  • Danny Meyer's sprawling, wood-trimmed barbecue joint, with its oversized booths, showpiece bar and late-night jazz club in the basement, is a hot spot for casual work lunches and fun nights on the town. Crowds pour in, and service is friendly and knowledgeable. The moderately priced menu features upscale comfort food, but only enough to showcase the high-quality ingredients and interesting pairings. The food is fun and unfussy, as creamy deviled eggs and hush puppies with jalapeno-marmalade prove. Pulled pork, though nothing like Carolina's versions, is chunky, chewy, with just enough smoke, while spice-rubbed and sauce-slathered ribs (best enjoyed as a sampler) feature fat-streaked, mostly tender pork and beef.
