at least once a month I stop bye Blue Smoke for 1 1/2 racks of their Texas Style Beef Ribs , I call for pick-up when I leave the gym on my walk home that gives me a reason to drin...

If you're looking for barbeque like Dallas BBQ (soaked in sauce from a bottle, generic, homogeneous food) then you won't like Blue Smoke. But if you want tasty ribs and a fun atmosphere this is the place. We've had a great time each time we've been there (with different friends). Why do chefs think they can pick up anything? 3/31/2003

This without a doubt was one of the most disappointing meals EVER. NYT says it is improving, from terrible to bad? The portions are a joke, the quality is fair. The joke is this place is trying to make gourmet BBQ? Give me a slab of ribs and sides. Case in point ribs at Virgil's same price, double the quantity and you get 2 choice of sides! Waiter says our ribs are smoked not steamed like Virgil's. Your ribs suck so who cares if you slow roast and put the finest spices! A word to the owner, price adjust guarantee you are out of business by the fall. $6.50 for collard greens & iceberg lettuce with just lettuce and weak dressing. Please at least try and get a good dressing. Also, notice no repeat customers. Seems like a lot of first timers or expense accounts, probably the cheapest and easiest Danny M. place to get in. PEOPLE save your money! more

In fact, go to the corner Chinese restaurant and get the ribs that come free w/ every order over $10. I gaurantee they are better ribs than Blew Smoke. There was no meat on the bones! BBQ Chicken was horrible also (dry, no meat)! On the flipside, the sides were damn good (homemade BBQ Chips, Hush Puppies, and Sweet Potato Fries) and the pulled pork was excellent. Pros: side dishes, pulled pork, Beer Selection Cons: Ribs, BBQ Chicken more

Because of all the rave reviews, I thought that I was in for a treat... Unfortunately the ribs which are the only reason for my going to any bbq style restaurant seemed old. They were not fresh at all. The sides were awesome but I love ribs and I am constantly trying to find the best in the city...these were definitely not the ones... One of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. These were the worst ribs I have had...period. If they have supposedly improved I would have hated to be one of the first to try them. They need to go back to the drawing board, or better yet, just board it up. more

Good Atmosphere, Terrible Food! 1/29/2003

Let me start by saying that the atmosphere is great and the service is acceptable (rather slow), but the food is absolutely terrible! I went with several friends and we tried the ribs, and the brisket. The ribs were tough and tasteless, but compared to the beef brisket they were outstanding. First the brisket arrived cold. When we alerted our server they took them back and apparently microwaved them. they returned piping hot and OVERDONE! They were well done, very dry, but now they were hot. This was my worst dining experience in my 3years in NYC! more

Cool place for a Saturday night. We went without a reservation and were told that the wait was 1.5 hrs, but were sat in a half hour. Nice bartenders, solid drinks. Food was really good. Oysters on the half were very good, and the fried green tomato app. was great. I had the Memphis ribs, and was a little disappointed as they were a little on the dry side.....Virgils is better. Other people in the party had the catfish and the pulled pork sandwich, and they raved. All in all a good night out, and cool atmosphere, just dont be suprised if you aren't wowed when you leave. And real ribs are not drowning in sauce. These are ""smoked"" ribs...hence the name. Many people do not like the taste of smoked meats, and that's an important consideration when choosing this restaurant. These are not bottled-barbeque-drenched, sticky-finger ribs. These are great ribs, they way they are supposed to be, served in a casual atmostphere with good beer and bourbon. The fry bread with chipotle butter helps it along just fine. more

  • Danny Meyer's sprawling, wood-trimmed barbecue joint, with its oversized booths, showpiece bar and late-night jazz club in the basement, is a hot spot for casual work lunches and fun nights on the town. Crowds pour in, and service is friendly and knowledgeable.The moderately priced menu features upscale comfort food, but only enough to showcase the high-quality ingredients and interesting pairings. The food is fun and unfussy, as creamy deviled eggs and hush puppies with jalapeno-marmalade prove. Pulled pork, though nothing like Carolina's versions, is chunky, chewy, with just enough smoke, while spice-rubbed and sauce-slathered ribs (best enjoyed as a sampler) feature fat-streaked, mostly tender pork and beef.
