at least once a month I stop bye Blue Smoke for 1 1/2 racks of their Texas Style Beef Ribs , I call for pick-up when I leave the gym on my walk home that gives me a reason to drin...

I was expecting a lot after all the hype and Best-Ofs and Critic's Picks, but was severely disappointed. My pulled pork lacked any discernible flavor and necessitated a serious do...

Really Great BBQ 9/29/2003

Seems like a lot of the reviewers were expecting Blue Smoke's BBQ to produce some sort of orgasmic reaction...it's just BBQ...if you want fancy food, go to Daniel or something. For what it is, this BBQ is outstanding. I was born and raised in Texas, and this BBQ is tender and flavorful by any standards. I tried the brisket (lean), the "Rhapsody in 'Cue," fried oyster salad, hushpuppies, and key lime pie. ALL excellent. Couldn't be happier b/c I've been searching for a good BBQ place for years here, and this place is definitely it. Sure, it's a bit pricey when compared to what I can get in TX, but it's Manhattan...totally expected. Service was just okay...but I think that had more to do with our waiter than the service in gen'l. Pros: Food (Esp. the ribs), Great Beer Selection, Fitting Decor Cons: Okay Service more

Great all around 9/26/2003

Blue Smoke does have the greatest ribs along with their great side dishes such as mac n cheese, hush puppies, cauliflower and potato gratin, and their barbequed mussels (this is awesome by the way!). Also, what also impressed me was their beer selection. They have some great beer at this place...they even have paulaner...and some great cocktails for the ladies...our server was really nice and knowledgable...oh yeah...did i mention their ribs are the best in the city? Definitely a must-go but make sure you make reservations in advance... more

For NYC, Great BBQ. 9/25/2003

Went to Blue Smoke last night and really enjoyed it. Bit disappointed with our particular waiter as we've dined at Danny Meyers restaurants in the past and have been very impressed with the waitstaff on every other occasion. Pulled pork sandwich was dry, but the beef ribs were fantastic. After sampling the delicious homemade (and warm) BBQ chips, the Fried Oyster salad and fry bread led us into our entrees with a smile. Pros: casual atmosphere, fun crowd, tasty ribs Cons: confused waitstaff, dry pulled pork more

Not quite Memphis but that's not all bad 9/5/2003

Like Cajun food and Tex-Mex, BBQ never tastes quite as good outside of the South, but Blue Smoke's baby back ribs and brisket were passable. What I really liked, though, were the homemade BBQ potato chips (to die for!), the devilled eggs (almost ruined by the added curry flavor) and the deserts. The brownie with chocolate sauce was wonderful, as was the Key Lime Pie. On the downside, I'd skip the Mac & Cheese. It tasted like someone had thrown in a few handfuls of onions. The service was very efficient and, even on a packed Friday night, the waiters, hosts, and bartenders were all very friendly. I also liked the crowd here. Hip, but unpretentious. Pros: Desserts, Atmosphere, Service Cons: It ain't Memphis more

Not bad for Yankee BBQ 9/3/2003

Better and a little classier than Virgil's (which, as a Southern girl, I never liked anyway). Blue Smoke has different types of 'cue, so that you can see that BBQ doesn't mean ""drowning in sauce"" like it can up here. The fresh watermelon and deviled eggs are a great touch. Beware the rug rats that come here - it's very kid-friendly. Pros: Reasonably authentic, Nice ambiance, Great music upstairs Cons: Crowded, Kid-friendly more

Blue Smoke 8/26/2003

What's the fuss over Blue Smoke? The ribs are dry, the sides dull, and the hot fudge sundae dismal. Excellent and friendly service and cornbread hardly made up. more

So Salty! 8/22/2003

Have been to a handful of BBQ/Southern food places in the city - this was the bougie version of southern BBQ. It was way too salty, my party and I all agreed, and I have heard this from people who have eaten there before. Service was great though, and the beer was good too (nice frosty mug). Pros: Service, Beer Cons: Food not great more

kid friendly brunch, otherwise so so food 8/3/2003

We went for brunch on a weekend with my 9 month old and it was kid central. They could not have been nicer about it too-they even had Blues Clues on the tv above the bar. The fod we ordered was pretty much a letdown-I had a Greek salad with a piece of smoked chicken on top. The chicken was very good-very moist, but a tiny piece. The salad looked as if it had been tossed in dressing (and alot of it) about 6 hours before. It was completely wilted and gross. My husband had brisket which he thought was so so. I was really disappointed. more

Good, But Could Be Better 7/31/2003

Like any of Danny Meyer's restaurants, Blue Smoke offers good, attentive service and you'll get your money's worth from a visit. But they could improve their barbecue offerings and they need to keep trying. Pros: Great ambience, Reasonable cost, Excellent service Cons: Average food more

Down Home Cooking 7/10/2003

Take the restaurant for what it is. It's a niche player in the NYC restaurant sceene (southern bbq cooking). If you feel like going for good ribs and great drinks, you go to Blue Smoke for dinner. Food is not going to blow you away, but you'll have a good meal. The staff by the way is excellent... very attentive and cordial.... I had a good experience... I say it's worth going when you get that rib craving.. Pros: Service, Good Food Cons: Noisy more

Go for Ribs 7/8/2003

Hey guys, this is New York, its not a shack in North Carolina. The ribs were excellent, the sides interesting, varied and delicious. Loved the sausage starter! The dessert sampler was fantastic! Aside from a very dizzy bartender, the service was uniformly excellent and extremely helpful & friendly. As far as a wait, I arrived for an 8:30 reservation and was seated at a great table by 8:35. No problems. Try it yourself and make up your own mind!! Pros: service, food, wash sink!! Cons: bartenders more

  • Danny Meyer's sprawling, wood-trimmed barbecue joint, with its oversized booths, showpiece bar and late-night jazz club in the basement, is a hot spot for casual work lunches and fun nights on the town. Crowds pour in, and service is friendly and knowledgeable. The moderately priced menu features upscale comfort food, but only enough to showcase the high-quality ingredients and interesting pairings. The food is fun and unfussy, as creamy deviled eggs and hush puppies with jalapeno-marmalade prove. Pulled pork, though nothing like Carolina's versions, is chunky, chewy, with just enough smoke, while spice-rubbed and sauce-slathered ribs (best enjoyed as a sampler) feature fat-streaked, mostly tender pork and beef.
