Best

at least once a month I stop bye Blue Smoke for 1 1/2 racks of their Texas Style Beef Ribs , I call for pick-up when I leave the gym on my walk home that gives me a reason to drin...

Worst

I was expecting a lot after all the hype and Best-Ofs and Critic's Picks, but was severely disappointed. My pulled pork lacked any discernible flavor and necessitated a serious do...

Blew Chunks 11/20/2002

This has got to be one of the most overrated restaurants in NYC. Talk about nothing special.... The ribs were dry and flavorless. Like beef jerky on bones, with no sauce. The wet napkins they give you at the end of the meal were more moist and warm. However, the fry bread was very good. Kind of like beignets. Everything else was average. Why so many people like it is beyond me. It seems you either love it or hate it. We're in the later. Pros: Crowded, Warm Napkins Cons: Ribs more

No ""Beef"" here.... 11/20/2002

Wonderful restaurant!! Friendly staff. The rib sampler is a good idea for the first timers. Try all three and pick your favorite. The sides were great as well. The sweet potato fries were huge steak fries, sweet and a great compliment to the ribs. Dessert was heaven. We tried the chocolate cake ,the key lime pie ,apple fritters and the sticky toffee pudding. All were magic but the toffee pudding sent us all to heaven. Moist cake sitting in a pool of toffee syrup. Fabulous!! After trying this place, have a feeling the ""bad"" reviews just might be from the ""competition"". Pros: fine food, friendly service more

Dont go - Dallas BBQ is even better 11/20/2002

There are obviously 2 types of reviewers here. Ones that have eaten the food (Rated 4 and below) and owners/friends (Rating above 6). I am unfortuantely someone that ate there. First of all if you cannot get mac and cheese right then close the doors. And what is the deal with the wonder bread instead of real bread. The ribs were sub par. The only thing I liked was the onion rings. Message to Danny - Stick with New American food. Pros: Onion Rings Cons: Wonder Bread, Mac and Cheese, Everything more

pig out! 11/20/2002

This bbq restaurant is a one of a kind in NYC. The food is consistantly great, but the wait is often long and the noise is often deafening. Go on a weeknight, when it's a little quieter Pros: food, service Cons: noise, noise, noise more

Smokin' Ribs and Beer 11/11/2002

High end southern BBQ joint. Great bar with a terrific selection of regional and foreign beers and an extensive menu of bourbons and cordials. Congenial bar and wait staff. Top notch atmosphere and a terrific selection on the juke box. Jazz club downstairs. Food is good to very good. A meat lovers delight. Dissapointed they didn't have fried green tomatos---out of season--I didn't know unripe tomatos had a season. Great place to meet friends after work. more

Smokin! 11/1/2002

Looooove this place. Good vibe, great ribs, delish potato chips and blue cheese and bacon dip - but most of all those blood orange margaritas! Been twice in 2 weeks and found the service friendly. Will definitely go again despite the fact that 3 drinks, chips and dips came to over $30. Pros: Great food, Great drinks, Good vibe Cons: Expensive more

Great Foie Gras but...... 10/30/2002

The smoked Foie gras was delicious then it was downhill. My 1/2 order of salt and pepper ribs were nothing like the full order that my friends ordered. Mine were almost meatless and recooked. The bread and pickles is a cute idea but NO the bread is commercial presliced wonder bread type. Yuk!!! Service was friendly but extremely slow. Music was Chinese water torture, disco, selected on the juke box which was set ta a much too high a volume. The Pear and cranberry crisp was almost all underbaked crisp with little fruit. Will I go back, maybe for the foie gras. Danny Meyer where are you? I wanted to love it but no. Pros: Foie gras, pleasant service Cons: Noise level, slow service, Not good value more

Really Wanted To love It 10/28/2002

Made a return trip to Blue smoke after being their twice around the opening. I really wanted to love it but was more disappointed than when they opened. The food has not improved if anything it got worse. Danny must be hurting just for the fact that he installed TV's at the bar and has a sign promoting Monday Night Football in the window. The service was spotty at best. Ordered 4 desert the 3 that required no work in the kitchen (cakes and pies were rushed out and the Ice Cream Sundae had to be asked where it was and eventually showed up 10 minutes later. This was in a resturant that was not full. Pros: great space Cons: clueless staff more

Worth every minute of the 1/2 hour wait, despite out reservation. Hey - What better excuse to sit at the bar and try another one of their fantastic drinks. If you are craving barbque...try out Blue Smoke! The side dishes are definitely the stars on the menus, so don't be shy order a few. more

  • Danny Meyer's sprawling, wood-trimmed barbecue joint, with its oversized booths, showpiece bar and late-night jazz club in the basement, is a hot spot for casual work lunches and fun nights on the town. Crowds pour in, and service is friendly and knowledgeable. The moderately priced menu features upscale comfort food, but only enough to showcase the high-quality ingredients and interesting pairings. The food is fun and unfussy, as creamy deviled eggs and hush puppies with jalapeno-marmalade prove. Pulled pork, though nothing like Carolina's versions, is chunky, chewy, with just enough smoke, while spice-rubbed and sauce-slathered ribs (best enjoyed as a sampler) feature fat-streaked, mostly tender pork and beef.
